The Jayhawks (including Louris, Olson, and related)
Analogman replied to Analogman's topic in Someone Else's Song
I was thinking they were written by someone with some serious knowledge of the band. I just saw this at the Jayhawks Fanpage: Also, a thread about the re-issue work. Jayhawks Official Site I think they should have put Tampa To Tulsa on the anthology. Podcasts -
genuine basement tapes vs. a tree with roots

And then, someone sells them: Bob Dylan Radio Radio Vol. 2 (4 CD Set). -
That's good point. I suppose I like both of those things you mentioned, depending on what band we are talking about. I don't think I have listened to any R.E.M. for a long time. I may break out Fables of The Reconstruction tomorrow morning.

If we are talking loudness wars, I agree. But other than that, there are good examples. The Byrds and Grateful Dead re-masters are two examples I would put forth as pretty darn good. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say The Beatles cds (which were re-mastered in the mid 1980s, with early digital sound technology) did not need to be redone before.

How is it that Peter Buck is a better guitar player than Jay Bennett or Nels Cline? I've never looked at R.E.M. as being great musicians. For them, I do believe it's about the song. And when they were good, it was about telling a story in a song. I've read interviews before where Peter calls himself a "passable guitarist". Now those may have been old interviews, I can't recall exactly. He was probably referring to their beginnings, I suppose. But still, I can't think of anything he has done that is exactly mind blowing. For me, R.E.M. was finished when they left the people, places, and th

We talked about that in this thread a while back: It may start about here (not exactly sure).

I have to check it out some more. I've really only played it once so far.

That's about I figured. I don't think I can justify spending that amount of bread on boxsets (anymore). They should just give them away.

There use to be another festival place up that way, but I think they shut down. I think they are trying to shut the current festival down also. .

I've often thought that he probably does not have much of anything to do with the archival releases. I suppose he must sign off on them at some point. -

I was able to find the CD/DVD/Bonus Disk version last night at Best Buy for 20 bucks. Or I should say, I followed the dude around the store until he finally found a copy for me. I don't know why in the hell they have the same product in three places, but I got it, so what the hell. Everybody Gets By is a great song. I bought the new Son Volt, Wilco, and The Jayhawks all at the same time last night. I figure I will probably play The Jayhawks release the most. For me, they are tops, along with Uncle Tupelo, and Blue Mountain, of course. Also - the booklet is great, a lot of text to read, and -

Exactly. There are some great songs there, just like The Black Crowes and Ryan Adams, sometimes what didn't come out was better than what got released. -

They should put all of that stuff out, officially. If they ever do, hopefully they won't mess with the tracks like they did for the official release in 1975. It would be expensive, but the Dylan freaks would buy it. -
I managed to pick up American Central Dust last night. I had not really heard it until now - Roll On seems alright.

Speaking of that site, I have always been amazed by the work these people do: The Unofficial Bob Dylan Free Library -
That is right up the road from me. The newspaper has been full of articles this week complaining about the festival, and making fun of the people there. I bet all the convenience store owners and others making money from all of those people are not complaining too much.

This is from an email they sent out yesterday:

Right. I believe part of that is due to his old school country/bluegrass/Clarence White background.

I'd check the forums at Expecting Rain and see what they say. -
How do I clean my turntable stylus?
Analogman replied to Livin' in New Orleans's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I don't recall ever cleaning a phonograph needle - except for wiping it with my fingertips, or waving the air around it - in order to remove the build-up once in a while. Of course, all of my records are mostly old and tore up to hell - so I am not one to say, I guess. The sound you hear is part of the magic, I do believe. -
From what I can tell, he does not travel to far from his roots. I don't think he is interested in becoming well known (that is, at the top of the charts, People magazine, etc.) He still tours in a van, does he not? I think he did do a lot of press the last time around, or I recall reading a lot of interviews with him, anyhow. I've never seen Son Volt, but I did see a solo Jay show once. I met him backstage (but that's another story). I think he is more likely to play some UT songs than Wilco is, due to the fact that he already had it together back then, and his style has not changed that

I remember when they were called Tour Books.
