Wilco — 8/1/12, Hartford, CT (Mortensen Hall at The Bushnell)

Oh, and back to the crowd, I thought it was a great audience. The entire orchestra on its feet the entire show, everyone dancing throughout. People were very into it. -

First, speaking of a CT crowd on a Wednesday night, Tweedy commented on what a "rowdy" crowd it was for a Wednesday night. Of course then adding that all the other crowds on this tour sucked:) But to the main point, what a difference a night makes, at least for me. The quality of the sound un this beautiful theater was superb (my first time there). I went from being 2 persons off the rail at MassMoca to 12 th row center in Hartford, and the difference was stark. Most noticeably in hearing Glenn's drumming (one of the main attractions for me at any Wilco show). I didn't realize how much -
Wilco — 7/31/12, North Adams, MA (Hunter Center at MASS MoCA)

I was thinking the same for the first 45 minutes or so, but then I thought the band lightened up and energized. Certainly by the last segment of the main set, John, Nels and Mikael were flying all over the place. I'm not so sure I like having One Sunday Morning as a show opener. Love the song, totally. But it's such a quiet, serious song, and from close observation last night it looked like it requires every bit of concentration Tweedy can muster, that it seemed to set too "tight" a tone for the beginning of the show. But, it could have been road weariness (though they were off the night -

I was right down front in front of John and it was definitely not ear covering loud there. But I was probably missing most of the volume coming from the side stage pa's. -

We were joking Pre-show that we felt like we were in a high school gym for a Friday night battle of the bands. Then we decided that our high school gym was bigger. I didn't notice any visible evidence that the band had trouble hearing each other. -

I'll chime in, since I can't sleep after a good show. Who is the person who got in for $1??? So nice to be back at MASS MoCA. Very mellow scene inside pre-show. I went in right away and got right up front, but folks were hanging out and eating and wandering the museum. The room didn't fill until almost show time, and even then there was plenty of room to be. Wilco gave the museum the gift of this show, and without an opener we got a 2 hour and almost 25 minute set by my count. Thanks to the drum tech for getting them to play Magazine ("it's in his contract that we have to play th -

Who's Going To What/Which/When 2012 Gigs? Roll Call

MassMoCA tomorrow, and then Hartford on Wednesday. Road trip. Leaving the Cape tonight. Hugely psyched for back to back shows, particularly in that small room at MassMoCA! -
Thankfully!

What a great move! -
I answered my own questions. Mass MoCA site says show at 8:00. Also says to come early as galleries will be open until 7:30. Any VC Pre-show gathering? I answered my own questions. Is there an announced time for this show? I looked at the Shows page on the Wilco site and there is no time listed. Also, anyone know what time doors?

That's the glass half full or half empty of a soundboard. That's also why I love a matrix. But I'm not complaining, I am so glad Wilco is doing this and I have and will purchase the downloads to show my support.

I love that. Get home, plug in your ticket number, and for the price of admission you also have an mp3 (no flacs for free) of the show you just saw. I think it's brilliant. I've got Phish soundboards of all the shows I've attended since they started this for free. And because I think they're so generous with this policy, I'm happy to buy downloads of great shows I wasn't at. OK, I'd probably do that anyway, but still...

I still have vivid memories (nightmares actually) of Garcia taking the stage in shorts during hot summer stadium shows. Given that choice, I'm happy to see Tweedy in his sport coat and hat stage attire. (But I wouldn't mind if he mixed it up a little with a different jacket). The band usually wears nice looking long sleeve shirts, even in the heat. It's one thing for the crowd to be in tee shirts, shorts and sandals, but these guys are on stage performing, and I'm glad to see that they have enough respect for their position to put on some nice looking clothes, even if they are going to swe

So happy to see this news! Funny that many times over the last several weeks I've wished that Wilco would set up a live download site, and here it is. I come from the GD, Phish, Allmans, Mule, etc world, where this has been going on for sometime. A really crisp audience is always nice, and can be preferable to a sterile sounding board, but I love that they did this. I'm buying, today.

Hot Tuna started as a side project while Jack and Jorma were still in the Airplane. Their first one or 2 albums came out while the Airplane still existed, definitely the first acoustic album. Hot Tuna would open shows for the Airplane. Jack and Jorma eventually left the Airplane to do Hot Tuna full time. So I think they fit within this topic.

In the middle of Art of Fielding right now, a good read. I hadn't previously thought of it, but I agree with the John Irving reference. Before that, I read Zeitoun by Dave Eggers. (I haven't mastered the ability to display the book covers when using my iPad). A non-fiction account of a Syrian family in New Orleans during and after Katrina. Excellent book. And infuriating to read what out of control police state government can do.

Wilco not doing festivals? Didn't they just do Forecastle? And Hangout Festival? Plus those 3 festivals in Europe? Something does not compute.

There was something about that Autumn Defense show that was very special. Maybe the combo of the room and it being Solid Sound, I don't know, but "countrified shimmer" says it perfectly. I am so looking forward to seeing Wilco there.
