  1. Last week's episode of Parenthood featured some GD. Ray Romano's character, referring to his high school days said:"I was the cool one, I drove a Honda, I listened to the Dead not disco, and I sold pot out of the back of my car.". Eyes of the World (studio version) playing in the background.
  2. Fall '79 tour. I was at the Cape Cod show, still memorably epic.
  3. Saw them last year at the Paradise in Boston, on my college son's recommendation. Good band, good show, but don't think they (yet) have the song book to hook me as a favorite band. Don't know if they will. Definitely not in the Tweedy/Wilco league. Btw, what time did they come on? Seeing Heartless Bastards at Royale also a 6:00 show, wondering what to figure.
  4. Yeah, I take that back about nothing coming close to Duane and Dickey. Warren and Derek ain't too shabby.
  5. Thanks for that! Certainly a different arrangement than what I'm used to hearing.
  6. Never heard that version. I first knew Dead Flowers as a New Riders song. They killed it. Check out their version on Home Home on the Road, a fantastic live album (not just because I was in the audience) recorded at NYC's Academy of Music (my home away from home during h.s.) and produced by Garcia.
  7. No doubt. Nothing comes close to Duane and Dickey twirling those harmonized lead lines around each other.
  8. I know the topic calls for 10, but it's late and I'm tired, and I thought it incredible that I didn't see Dead Flowers already mentioned!
  9. I was going to ask the same. I don't get it. But if I did get it, I would add Johnny Ramone to the list.
  10. Most recently: The Lee Ranaldo Band, opening for Wilco in Hartford
  11. Bobby Weir Keith Nobody else in their class as rhythm guitarists to my ears
  12. Hmmm, which one, or both? I seem to recall people raving about the VT show at the time.
  13. I haven't closely followed the setlists at end of summer, but they opened with it at MassMoCA, how many shows after that did they not play it? I love the song, but commented at the time I didn't think it was a great opener. I was right u P front, just seemed to me like it's a difficult song to play. But of course I have no idea.
  14. oops, I didn't notice the date in the topic heading. Yes, Duke it is.
  15. The Chambers Brothers, Westbury Music Fair. Must have been around 1971. "Time Has Come Today" was a big song at summer camp. Then Black Sabbath at the Academy of Music, on the Masters of Reality tour. So was 1971 or 1972. My one and only flirtation with anything of that genre.
  16. Does it count as my first album purchase if I asked my dad to pick it up for me at the E.J. Korvettes store on his way home from work in NYC?
  17. I happened to catch a replay of that interview. That's Peter Shapiro, from The Wetlands, Brooklyn Bowl and Relix. He's living the life I wish I were And they've already got an excellent schedule in what will surely be an awesome venue. http://www.thecapitoltheatre.com/
  18. I thought the '87-'91 period was generally an excellent period for Garcia and the GD band. I got off the bus in the early '80's, around '81 I guess, and was shocked as hell to see how great I thought they were when i went back in September '87. The hiatus did me good. From my experiences, both live and tape trading, the MSG fall '90 and Boston fall '91 were the last great runs. I was surprised to read the liner notes to the current spring '90 box set as calling that the last great period (I know they're selling). I kept going until the end, but the '92-95 era were often painful to watch,
  19. It's a powerful song. My problem with it is that it evokes strong feelings of melancholy and sadness. Which speaks to the power of the song, but I just don't like the effect it has on me.
  20. Dash 7 is not a personal favorite, but if you're talking about Wishful Thinking, well now that's another story entirely!
  21. Great picking by you! Having a spouse/significant other who shares your musical likes/obsessions is so awesome. My wife doesn't appreciate all my musical interests (GD, Allmans, i.e.) but she shares many, including Wilco (and XTC back in the day). Makes being Wilco obsessed so much more enjoyable for me.
  22. They are still pretty much a bar/club band. That makes them severely underrated in my book.
