That's a super hard question to answer. There's a similar topic on the Hoffman Forum (probably been many) that generates zillions of responses/suggestions. I agree with starting with Europe '72, that has to be everyone's consensus first choice. I would then throw in next a studio release, American Beauty, for its sheer elegance in playing and timeless classics in the American songbook. Then come back here if after giving those a listen you're still interested to listen to more. I'm sure we'll be able to point you in the direction of one or two more. Plus, I've got tons of excellent qualit

Here's what annoyed me about these shows (caveat: I did not attend any), which is no different than a typical GD show was: first set of about 75 minutes? Then a 60 minute set break, then about 30-45 minutes of music before a 10-15 minute drums/space segment. My timings may be off , but not by much I bet. So for 175 minutes, there's about 100 minutes of music. Or something like that. The point being, I don't care how old they are, I'm not into a 60 minute set break after 75 minutes of music, and then for all intents and purposes another break for the musicians other than the drummers. That's coming from Billy, who told a PBS interviewer that he thought the East Coast deadheads should have gotten some shows (damn right we should have!) and that he would be up for playing more. http://www.jambase.com/Articles/125690/Bill-Kreutzmann-Wants-East-Coast-Grateful-Dead-50-Shows

Based on an initial listen of the mp3 at work (not ideal listening conditions), the official release is a substantial improvement over the WFUV stream

Tweedy interview and performance on CBS Saturday Morning
worldrecordplayer replied to BobDylan'sBeard's topic in Just A Fan
Heartwarming interview to see the entire family. Very nice peak behind the curtain of Jeff Tweedy. My wife and I loved it, so glad Susan agreed to do this. -
Pretty much sums up my impression of last night from my couch. Only difference, I always want to hear more Trey, I don't know if this was a discovery for you, but either way, hearing more Trey is always a good thing in my book. For me, not being there in the midst of the energy of the crowd, the numerous flubs and weak transitions took a lot of wind out of my sail.

From what I heard and saw, Trey was fantastic throughout. Not to give myself a pat on the back, but I knew he was a fantastic choice from the minute this was announced. I never understood all the negative commotion about that, the guy is just a fantastic player with his head and heart in the right place. Trey shined throughout.

I was less emotional about last night's "Fare Thee Well" than I expected to be. Mostly because GD music lives on for me in current incarnations. I guess I didn't have an emotional attachment to the "core 4" being on stage together or for them calling themselves the Grateful Dead one last time. I thought that would get to me, but it just didn't. GD music is still very important to me, and I'll continue to go hear it live when I can. Next up will be Phil and Friends for 2 nights at Lockn'. And to my ears, the best current way to experience live GD music is to go see or listen to JRAD.

I listened on and off on Sirius to Friday and Saturday, last night was the first night I was home and got myself situated for the PPV. I was psyched and had high expectations based on everything I had been hearing from all those "picky" deadheads, but truth be told I was underwhelmed last night. I'm sure I would have had fun if I had been there, but the music didn't make the leap from the stadium to my tv room (and I usually love doing couch tour). Most of my issues were with Weir: his guitar playing was fine, but he just visually looked so out of it, and his singing was terrible, both voic

Not a " heard" but a "seen". Pretty sure I saw a Wilco license plate, MA plate, last night in Pocasset on Cape Cod. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Sounded like Gary Lambert was at SS Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

You know it was one of my goals to make this Wilco tee shirt gallery. At least the cherry ghost shirt I was wearing on Saturday got in, worn by some imposter! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Got me! At the 1:10-1:22 mark, I'm wearing a blue and black rain coat and grey cap (Levon Helm Band, in honor of the Sunday at SS which was the last time I saw him) with my wife in a brown rain coat to my right and my daughter's friend Jason in black to my left. Love this video, every person in rapt attention. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I continue to be surprised by the multiple folks complaining about the amount of pot being smoked. I was dead center of the field all 3 shows, a prime spot, and I caught only infrequent wiffs of weed. Less than I expected (and less than I prefer to tell you the truth! I'm all for the potheads at concerts, much better than the beer drinkers.) That you didn't notice any weed being smoked at McCartney, Elton John or Billy Joel is meaningless. I would have been shocked if you did. I'm surprised at CRB, that must have been a small indoor venue with tight security. And whether you noticed it

Hey, no problem, my pleasure. Glad you found it and are digging it. Man, i think it's awesome (I've said that once or twice before around these parts ) A couple of years ago I upgraded some of my home stereo equipment and got a new CD player that has a HDCD decoder built in. Whoa, those GD releases always sounded good, but with a real HDCD decoder they just open up so much more.

Damn, so I think you must have been right in my perimeter for both Saturday and Sunday! I'll have to wear a name tag next SS. Glad you weren't the one who spilled beer on my backpack. But I'm not complaining-its a music festival, shit happens. No matter what I'll do the rest of the summer (and I'll spend some quality time on the outer Cape), SS will be my favorite weekend of the summer. Always is.

Another "amen" to this!

My non-Wilco related high and low of SS '15: High: Real Estate Low: Jessica Williams in the comedy cabaret. Love her on The Daily Show, I was really looking forward to her show. Big disappointment. She performed with another comedian who I did not know, they drove up from Brooklyn that morning, and had obviously done little or no preparation. Just basically got up on stage and riffed. Very few laughs. Not impressive. She would have been much better solo. And I missed some great music for this.

I know it's not 1974 anymore: news flash for you: pot is basically legal now. (I don't think that line's working in your favor). Reminds me of a Wilco show I listen to from Troutdale, OR (where as of today pot is legal- definitely not 1974 anymore). Must be an outdoor show, and at one point Tweedy starts bantering about the amount of pot being smoked. He's hilarious. "No wonder you want us to play more, you're all so high". "there's children here." Personally, I'd rather be next to the folks sharing a joint than next to the guys coming back from the beer stand with beers in both hands. Just my

Funny, I meant to note that I noticed very little pot smoking, and I was on the field halfway back to the soundboard for all the sets. I was surprised there wasn't more. I would have been fine trading places! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Don't think it's an apt comparison to compare the growth of SS to the Touchheads of the GD scene in the late '80's and 90's. To me this is more the result of organic growth of a great festival. Word got out and people came. Sure, the first SS was a lot more chill at 3500, but the promoters lost money so that wasn't sustainable. I also had a bad Friday experience, but that was mostly due to the exuberance of a hard core female Wilco fan who thought it was appropriate to sing every song as loud as she could. Surprised to read complaints about people smoking pot. News flash: you were at a concert. An outdoor concert. People like to get high and listen to music. Especially outdoors. Must be because I come from a GD and Phish background, but I find it more newsworthy to go to a show where people are not smoking pot. I always assumed it comes with the territory. Now cigarette smoke, that's an entirely different story. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
