working my way through all of the 1966 shows. Interesting stuff - very poppy. Jerry soloing very similar song to song. Weir singing was all scream. Lesh harmonies were awful. Pigpen was amazing...

The 72-74 Chider transitions were great for Weir as he usually had the lead for the post China Cat jam and jerry took over for the pre-Rider jam. Luckily, the SSDD footage captures it... Check out beginning at 4:40 (4:57): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BoXpdRCDfg

11-17-73 is an interesting choice. In my opinion the PUMUP is the best of the year (and better than the 3-23-74 show). The transition from Dew to UJB is breathtaking. The transition from UJB to PITB (the wah wah pedal transition) is stunning...easily some of their best playing ever...But, in my opinion, the remainder of that show is average for the year. This leads to the ultimate dilemma for Rhino - release the best shows ever or the best jams ever (even if the jams are sandwiched in an average show). How many shows were truly exceptional from the first note through the final note of the

I always found this bumper sticker to be particularly appropriate for about 7 years of my life...

I really like the recent stuff post 2008, and I'll continue to see as many shows as I can, but the shows seem very similar and almost too formulaic. The jams / solos are nearly identical show to show and the show format doesn't seem to change (except for the chicago 2011 shows). I like it though because it is nearly exceptional night to night - but sometimes it just seems like the same show over and over again. Reminds me of GD 1977 - exceptional but lacking in improvisation. The earlier Wilco stuff (especially 2001 / 2002 / 2003) seemed a bit rawer and without a net-ish.
-
I have always thought 1972 was the best year for the Grateful Dead. Is there a consensus on Wilco's best years? 2002 to me seems to be at least right up there...
-
Just listened to Wilco 11-02-2002...wow - amazing show.. Been listening to a lot of 2002 Wilco - that was a really impressive year for them... Wilco 2002 is equivalent to Grateful Dead 1972???? http://wilcoarchive.com/wilco%2020021102/ WilcoTampa TheaterTampa, FLNovember 2nd, 2002SOUNDBOARD MASTER RECORDING A+RECORDED BY JIM FIESLERThanks to Jim for this great recording!!Seeded @ dimeadozen.org by avnut (avnutondime@gmail.com) 2/18/08Stereo Soundboard Recording>Sony D-8 @ 44.1 XLR 1/8" DAT Master>CDR>EAC>WAV>Flac Level 8Uncirculated SBD Master Recording > Shared With

I love the 2.2.1970 Dark Star - one of the finest in my opinion...

9.17.1982 is pretty smoking. 12.31.1972 (even with crosby) has always been a favorite. 11.17.1973
-
11.17.1973 is in my opinion the best of the PUMUPs....the transition from UJB > PITB is pure glory. The final space before the PITB reprise is some of the best Jerry soloing I've heard....but - the rest of the show is only average compared to other shows of the era in my opinion....
