  1. Yup. On the 30th they only played two songs but on the 31st they played Lovelight, Tell Mama, Baby What You Want Me To Do, Hard To Handle, and Midnight Hour. I remember listening to the radio broadcast of the show and you remember correctly. She sort of rambled between songs and basically said "I don't know who these guys are but they are great."
  2. They are indeed great live but you should know that this tour is a little different. They are describing it is this: "The Freewheeling Yo La Tengo Tour is a rare opportunity to see this ever-surprising band in a setting more intimate and interactive than any tour in their 23-year career. A little bit Storytellers, a little bit Unplugged, with a soupcon of their famously varied Hanukkah shows, it will feature the band playing an almost-acoustic set of songs from their entire catalog, with stories about their life as a band, and an encouraged back-and-forth with the audience. Already famous
  3. I saw a lot of Grateful Dead shows between 1980 and 1986 but one of the coolest was seeing Etta James and Tower of Power horns sit in for the encore on 12/30/82. They played Hard to Handle and Tell Mama. (They played a longer set the next night but we couldn't get tickets ...)
  4. Me too. I'm liking it; Russo's great.
  5. A guy I work with always uses "exasperate" when he means "exacerbate."
  6. I don't mean to kick a guy when he is down - because I actually like Joe Torre - but his managing record before he got to the Yankees was not so good. Granted he managed some bad teams, but in parts of 15 seasons he had one first place finish and, if I did the math right, a .470 winning percentage.
  7. My favorite post-game quote from Kenny Lofton: "When you say stuff to Kenny, he's going to say stuff back."
  8. Here are the tour dates. 9. Remember when he was the closer? Those were some nail-biting 9th innings ...
  10. All My Little Words Magnetic Fields You are a splendid butterfly It is your wings that make you beautiful and I could make you fly away but I could never make you stay You said you were in love with me Both of us know that that's impossible and I could make you rue the day but I could never make you stay Not for all the tea in China not if I could sing like a bird not for all North Carolina not for all my little words not if I could write for you the sweetest song you ever heard It doesn't matter what I do not for all my little words. Now that you've made me want to die
  11. Some friends of mine had interviewed Throwing Muses for a fanzine (remember those?). The Muses raved about the Pixies. A month or so later Throwing Muses were playing a show at the Rat in Boston and they had the Pixies open for them. So we went ...
  12. I saw the Pixies before they were signed. The very first time I saw them was somewhat infamous in Pixies history. Ivo (from 4AD) had come over from England to see them play. For some reason Kim Deal couldn't make the show but they played anyway. Ivo liked them enough to sign them.
  13. DiFara's in Brooklyn. I'll eat whatever Dominic is taking out of the oven.
  14. It's a great site, but yes, that is kind of annoying ...
  15. Sweet Jesus - that is a lot of good music for one night!
  16. Saw the Magnetic Fields do all 69 Love Songs over two nights. And I saw them do it twice (once in Boston and once in NYC). Saw the Pixies a number of times in small clubs but one show at the Rat in Boston (with Galaxie 500 opening) stands out. Saw Richard Thompson play in a fairly small club. Saw Sonic Youth the week Daydream Nation came out. The word was they played it straight through but no one had it yet ...
  17. In chronological order: Grateful Dead - Europe 72 Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks REM - Reckoning (Harborcoat in particular) Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat Husker Du - Flip Your Wig Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs
  18. I'm not defending booing your own players, but Gagne has been terrible for the Sox. ERA of 6.75, no saves, 3 blown saves and 2 losses. And last night was rough. Sure he struck out the side but he also loaded the bases.
  19. Started this last night, and I'm liking it.
