  1. Although his parents call him Lloyd ...
  2. As an NYU grad, let me just say that while it may be harder to see Wilco, you will have the opportunity to see more music than you will have time (or money) for.
  3. Bill Janovitz's book on Exile on Main Street is quite good. It is very analytical, going through each song in order. I read it on my commute while listening to Exile on my ipod. I just got L. D. Beghtol's book on 69 Love Songs, which I think is more for the fan. That is one of my all-time favorite albums and the book includes some fun anecdotes about it and explains a lot of the references in the songs.
  4. From the speech: When America serves others in this way, we show the strength and generosity of our country. These deeds reflect the character of our people. The greatest strength we have is the heroic kindness, courage, and self-sacrifice of the American people. You see this spirit often if you know where to look -- and tonight we need only look above to the gallery. Dikembe Mutombo grew up in Africa, amid great poverty and disease. He came to Georgetown University on a scholarship to study medicine -- but Coach John Thompson got a look at Dikembe and had a different idea. Dikembe became
  5. You forgot the next bit: The State of Our Union is .... (wait for it) STRONG. (RESOUNDING APPLAUSE)
  6. I'm going to pick that up at lunch today. How is it?
  7. The prelude to that book is one of my favorite pieces of writing. I just found it really compelling ...
  8. New fathers should read it too! When my son was born, my wife and I would read it aloud to each other.
  9. I always liked Trot, probably more than I should have.
  10. I was listening to this last night! Love them Feelies ...
  11. And DiMaggio wasn't elected until his third try ...
  12. I am a huge Jim Rice fan but his numbers (.298, 382 HR, 1451 RBIs) and Belle's (.295 381 HR 1239 RBI) are pretty similar.
  13. Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken (98.5 percent of the vote) and Padres outfielder Tony Gwynn have been elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame, it was announced today. Controversial Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire and Red Sox great Jim Rice each fell short. Rice received 63.5 percent of the vote (75 percent is needed for induction).
  14. Newspapers: Boston Globe New York Times (Sunday only) Arlington Advocate Lincoln County (Maine) News I also used to get the Boston Herald but I stopped a few months ago. Magazines: New Yorker Magnet My wife is a professional gardener so she gets all sorts of gardening/design magazines that I occasionally look at.
  15. Started this last night, and am looking forward to reading more of it.
  16. Thanks for posting that. I am sure Gammons knows better than I do, but I was not all that impressed with Pedroia last year either in the field or at the plate. And maybe I hold Loretta in high regard after watching him hit a walk-off homerun last Patriot's Day.
  17. And Mark Loretta signs with the Astros. I don't get why the (Red) Sox didn't even try to re-sign him.
  18. I used to like David Caruso (on NYPD Blue). But this compilation demonstrates why I can never watch CSI Miami.
  19. I wonder what Tweedy thinks when he gets on here and sees that not even his own fans know how to use an apostrophe.
  20. Something that might get overlooked in the whole MVP discussion: He is the third Canadian-born athlete to win an MVP in a major pro league this year, following Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash and San Jose Sharks center Joe Thornton.
