  1. Saw the movie of this last night and thought it was excellent. Very dark but very funny.
  2. I know I am in the minority on this, but I have never been able to get into Wowee Zowee. I love Pavement and I would count Slanted as one of my ten favorite albums ever, but WZ just doesn't do it for me.
  3. ARod gets blamed because of plays like this:
  4. Interesting thread and quite a weird flashback for me. I bought my first CD player in 1991 and among the first CDs I bought was: Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend Richard Thompson - Rumor and Sigh Superchunk - No Pocky
  5. Scarlett Sings Tom Waits Scarlett Johansson Record Deal in the Works Scarlett Johansson and Lindsay Lohan are about to have something in common. Scarlett, I am told, has signed a deal to make her first record. "Scarlett Sings Tom Waits" is being recorded now and through the winter, with a possible release next spring from Rhino Records' recently reactivated Atco label. The eventual release date will be coordinated with Johansson's movie schedule. Fear not, though. Unlike some other recent pop tarts, Scarlett
  6. It's been a good series so far but somehow Perez (3-11, 6.55 ERA) vs. Reyes (5-8, 5.06) doesn't quite seem like playoff baseball ...
  7. A couple that I have not seen mentioned (but I might have missed 'em): New Pornographers Magnetic Fields
  8. I forgot about those. I remember walking in the 4th Street store (in 1986 maybe) and seeing Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians. But while I am bummed that they are closing, I also can't remember the last time I bought anything at one of the Boston-area stores.
  9. That's funny. I saw them at the Newport Folk Festival couple of years ago (the year Wilco played) and they were phenomenal. They were playing on one of the small stages and they rocked.
  10. It won't be easy. When the Red Sox were pursuing him they tried to get him to restructure his contract, but the players' union and MLB wouldn't allow it. For him to leave NY, much of it will be up to the Yankees and how much of his contract they are willing to eat.
  11. And my favorite, I Often Dream of Trains.
  12. "The Kids" - Lou Reed "Kamera" (Engineer's Demo version) - Wilco "Red" - Mission of Burma "Killing Moon" - Pavement "Cold Irons Bound" Bob Dylan
  13. Here is a decent article about their short history: Squirrel Bait
  14. Squirrel Bait was a band (of high school kids) out of Louisville that put out two great albums. The sound is not unlike Husker Du - loud but with melody. Three of the guys went on to form Slint and one who didn't (David Grubbs) went on to form Gastr del Sol.
  15. A good list. I would add: Replacements - Let it Be, Tim, Pleased to Meet Me Meat Puppets - II Husker Du - Flip Your Wig or New Day Rising Throwing Muses first one Squirrel Bait - Skag Heaven Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me
  16. As Mojo Nixon said (per Analogman's post) "don't let him get back together with Glenn Frey."
  17. Bettie Serveert - Palomine Saw them play last night. A really good show and they have lots of new stuff but I wanted to hear this one this morning.
  18. One of my favorite books ever is Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion. It is a little weird but I have no interest in reading it again. It really reminds me of a certain place and time in my life and I think part of me worries that it is not as good as I remember it being.
  19. The Office (from last night). I know, I know, the BBC version is better - but I really like the US version too. "I hope it's urine ..."
  20. I am really looking forward to this.
  21. I guess that is to be expected. I like them but I don't think they are a band that will vary their sound a lot.
