  1. I know; it is pretty frustrating. It has also been a while since Sox/Yankees games in September mattered so little. Coverage of the sweep on Sunday was on page 2 of the Boston Globe sports section on Monday (with the Patriots and NASCAR on page 1).
  2. Loved the book, but think the movie is pretty good too.
  3. I agree. I have been a fan for a while but their last one (Summer Sun) didn't do much for me.
  4. I remember seeing him in John Sayle's movie Matewan in the late 1980s and thinking he was great.
  5. I am certainly no Lips expert and it was only my second time seeing them. It was a great show. Truly entertaining; I smiled throughout. But the review in today's Boston Globe was pretty right on. It basically said that it was fun and entertaining, but it is esentially the same show they have been playing for several years with the same props. Yes, they have some new songs and some new tricks, but it is the same smoke and confetti and funny camera-on-the-microphone and balloons, etc. Set List: Race for the Prize Free Radicals Yoshimi Pt 1 (w/ sing along) Yoshimi Pt 2 Vein of Stars (
  6. I really like Alphabetical. I have fond memories of driving through the streets of LA, playing that album very loud.

  8. I like it. The guy who gave it to me (their manager) described it as Wilco crossed with the Shins, which I don't really see. There is defintely an early Wilco feel, some Jayhawks perhaps. Some nice guitars ...
  9. The other night I met Jay's manager (who, for some reason, lives in Boston). He gave me a copy of Jay's forthcoming CD, as well as CD by a band from Iowa City called Death Ships. He said that Jay will be touring in the fall, with Death Ships opening and then also playing as Jay's band. I have only listened to Jay's CD once and (as someone else said) I have trouble with his voice. There is one song he wrote with John Stirratt and I think Ken Coomer plays on a couple of tracks.
  10. Yikes ... BOSTON - Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was released from the hospital Thursday while pitcher Jon Lester is being tested for enlarged lymph nodes
  11. Saw this listed on another message board. Listed below is a list of gear that was stolen out of the Dinosaur Jr trailer last night (Tuesday 8.29.06) outside of their hotel in Long Island City, NY. We would appreciate spreading the word and passing this list around in hopes of recovering their gear. Feel free to send this list to any and all band, tour and production managers, guitar freaks, touring personnel, venues, musicians and or thieves that you think could help us. If anyone has any information about this gear, please call Brian Schwartz at 303.998.0001 or Bart Dahl at 212.777.0922
  12. I did not - although I did download it from his site. He has been playing a residency in Cambridge (Wednesday nights at the Lizard Lounge) with Crown Victoria, and tomorrow night is the last night. I have gone to a few of them and they are great. He plays some Crown Vic stuff and a bunch of covers, including several Stones songs from Exile.
  13. I just finished Bill Janovitz's (from Buffalo Tom) book on Exile on Main Street. I read it on my bus/subway commute while listening to Exile on my ipod. I thought it was great - but also important to be listening to it. He makes a lot of very specific references to moments of each song that would be confusing (or not as interesting) without actually listening to it.
  14. I have been watching the Sox long enough to know that they are going to have one last push where they look good for about a week and they get our hopes up before dashing them again. Unless of course Big Papi's irregular heartbeat finishes him for the season ...
  15. Touche. Youklis is playing left (rather than sharing it with Pena).
  16. Papi is sick and Manny is still hurting. Here is tonight's starting line up for the (Red) Sox. Not exactly what you want on your push for the playoffs. Coco Crisp, cf Alex Cora, ss Mark Loretta, dh Kevin Youkilis, 1b Mike Lowell, 3b Eric Hinske, rf Javy Lopez, c Carlos Pena, 1b Dustin Pedroia, 2b Kason Gabbard, p
  17. Link here to an MP3 blog with a bunch of amazing Sub Pop singles from the Sub Pop Single Club: I Am Fuel
  18. I think it just depends on how you define a "moderate" level of success. What I was trying to say was that they were succesful enough to keep at it for 15 years, but not successful enough to make a continued living at it.
  19. Indeed!! I have not been around these parts much (with a new job and all) but this past weekend sort of freaked me out. I am just old enough to remember the last Boston Massacre (in 1978) and that sense of helplessness was all too familiar. But this west coast trip is where they turn it all around ...
