It's hard to top M. Ward's "Chinese Translation," but here's Okkervil River's "Yellow" You can only talk so much about things that are never, ever going to happen. My brother's at home with his dog and his cat and his wife is at a friend's. You can only go on so long about feelings that never, ever actually touch you. No matter how much she told him "I love you," he found it would depend on the gifts that he bought her, or how badly she was hurt when the boss was cruel at work. But he'd just say "I love you," and he'd reach out to her. He was feeling like shit when I came

Name a band you think is better than the Ramones
Doug replied to ction's topic in Someone Else's Song
This thread made me think of Mark Prindle's review of The Jam's Dig the New Breed: http://markprindle.com/jam.htm#dig P.S. I think that Centro-Matic is better than the Ramones. -
I'm not a Bright Eyes fan, so I'd only buy this if it was heavy on M. Ward and light on Conor Oberst. I just hope this new band doesn't mean that M. Ward is gonna stop releasing solo albums.

"Patience for the Ride"-Centro-Matic "Re-Run Pills"-Will Johnson "Yellow"-Okkervil River "Home"-Pavement "But I'm Different Now"-The Jam

Any fans of Varnaline? What do y'all think of 'em? Is it something a Wilco/Dylan/GbV/Centro-Matic/Son Volt fanatic would like?
-
If you want a Jam song, I'd suggest "But I'm Different Now" or "A Solid Bond in Your Heart" (it's on Extras, so it counts!).

I've been a long-time fan of The Jam (ever since I was talked into buying a "Snap!" cassette in 1986, when I was 13 and just starting to get interested in 70's British punk rock; The Jam stopped me from being a Sex Pistols/Buzzcocks/Damned/Clash man and more of a Jam/PiL/Fall/Wire man), but I've ignored Weller's solo stuff and stuff he did with The Style Council (except for a SC "greatest hits" thingie that I bought and promptly sold back to the store). What do y'all think of Weller's solo stuff? I've read a bunch of reviews, and for the most part they're positive, if not glowing. Would "Moder

It's good to see Unrest get some love. Those guys (and sexy girl) were underrated in my humble opinion. "Yes, She is My Skinhead Girl" should've been a top 10 hit.

Not true. This Yankee is a long-time Weddoes/Cinerama fan. Been listening to Gedge's stuff since 1991. Saw them in Atlanta on their last tour in 1996, a few months before their 6-year hiatus started. They're slowly working on the follow-up to "Take Fountain." Can't fuckin' wait.

Not a lot of love for Son Volt's new one, eh?
-
Huge Okkervil River fan here (although I don't have their first 2 albums; all I have is Golden Dreams, BSB, and Stage Names, and I fuckin' love 'em), but I've never gotten around to hearing Shearwater. I don't have access to online audio, so I can't access audio clips or mp3's or whatever, but could y'all tell me how Shearwater compares to Okkervil River? Are they just as good? Better? Worse? How does the singer compare with Will Sheff? And what about the lyrics? If y'all think an OR fan will like Shearwater, where should I start? The new Matador thing, or something older?

"30 Year Low" Mendoza Line "The Stage Names" Okkervil River "SBS" Wilco "Euridice Proudhon" Capstan Shafts "Memory Almost Full" Paul McCartney honorable mention: "The Search" Son Volt
-
I know there are a few Mendoza Line (R.I.P.) fans out there, so I thought I'd tell y'all I found out that Timothy Bracy already has a new band together. They're called Timothy Bracy's Collection Agency. Nice, eh?! They have a myspace page, so take a look.

Guided by Voices- Bee Thousand Pavement- Slanted and Enchanted Wilco- YHF Pearl Jam- No Code Beatles- Abbey Road Dylan- Bringing It All Back Home (Again, it's not my favorite these days, but it's the first Dylan album I heard.)

March 2008. Can't wait! Why doesn't Distance and Clime get any love? It's one perfect little pop song after another. Will ranks right up there with Bob Pollard as far as prolific noisy-pop songwriters go. It's taken awhile, but I've finally fallen in love with the South San Gabriel and WJ solo albums. I think it was "Smelling Medicinal" and "Tent of Total Mystery" that did it.
-
I agree. Redo the Stacks is brilliant, start to finish. So many damn good pop songs. I can listen to "Am I the Manager of am I Not?" and the very GbV-ish "Hoist Up the Popular Ones" over and over again and never get tired of 'em. God bless you, Will Johnson!
-
Looks like Will Johnson is filling in on drums for the next handful of Son Volt concerts. First Jandek, and now Son Volt. The guy gets around. New Centro-Matic/South San Gabriel double-CD is coming out early next year. Can't wait!

Are any of y'all fans of this band? Apparently they were the backing band for M. Ward on "Transfiguration of Vincent," which is one of my all-time favorite discs (by one of my all-time favorite artists), so I thought maybe their 3 albums might be worth getting. What do y'all think?
-
Yo La Tengo- "I Threw It All Away" Mendoza Line- "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry" Eddie Vedder/Pearl Jam- "Masters of War" I've got a feeling there's gonna be a bunch of good ones on the upcoming I'm Not There soundtrack.
