  1. I'm not a doctor or a scientist, so I haven't done any personal research on the matter. Aside from the supposed autism link, what other research is there that demonstrates vaccines are ineffective or dangerous? The 1998 "study" that showed a link between the MMR vaccine and autism was falsified and the lead doctor on the study lost his medical license because of it. And it has been repeatedly shown that there is no link. Furthermore, there have been outbreaks in small pockets of the nation of diseases like measles and pertussis, which had largely been eradicated in the developed world. Most
  2. Yep. Although that seems rooted more in politics. Whereas the anti-vaccine crew seems to be more rooted in crazy.
  3. I've listened to it a few times. It's good, but I'm not buying a lot of the rapturous praise for it. I think with many aging bands, a lot of fans and/or critics will hail any decent album as a "return to form," whether it deserves it or not. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I think a lot of fans delude themselves; wanting it to be better than it is (see Wilco). I'll give it a few more listens, but St. Vincent's new one is much more exciting and interesting.
  4. It's interesting how people will often trust their own lay opinion on this subject and ignore the expert opinions of many doctors and ignore the numerous studies behind those opinions.
  5. Never mind. It appears they have an "answer" for that too.
  6. There's another interesting thing about Noah I've been wondering about. I assume he had kangaroos, koalas, lemurs, etc., on the ark. But why did he ship them all back to Australia and Madagascar after the flood?
  7. Should be interesting. I've liked almost all of Aronofsky's films.
  8. Not that difficult. His hero is who he strives to be in 10 years. Makes complete sense.
  9. Loved McConaughey's speech. All the acceptance speeches were great.
  10. Not a lot of discussion about the Oscars this year. Probably because the results seemed especially predictable this year. Plus, I didn't get around to seeing everything until Sunday afternoon. My order of preference of the Best Picture nominees: 1. Her 2. Gravity 3. The Wolf of Wall Street 4. Captain Phillips 5. Dallas Buyers Club 6. Philomena 7. Nebraska 8. American Hustle 9. 12 Years a Slave I really didn't like 12 Years a Slave. I thought the performances and screenplay were ham-fisted (except for Fassbender). It felt disjointed; more like a series of scenes and images barely stitched t
  11. Were there isolation cells for predators like lions and velociraptors?
  12. Cooley sings one of Patterson's songs on this new album ("Til He's Dead or Rises"). It's the only time in DBT's history this has happened. Otherwise, they sing what they have written. And it's easy to tell them apart.
  13. Dan Patrick is definitely the worst surprise of the night. But the success of Ken Paxton, Glenn Hegar, Sid Miller, Wayne Christian is certainly depressing. Not to mention the way many Texas House seats went. Plus, the District 11 State Board of Education seat will be in a runoff, which worries the hell out of me since the hard right is the only group that will turn out to vote in a runoff. So there's a victory for those that feel God is the most important thing in the classroom and Noah had dinosaurs on the ark.
  14. And Texas politics takes a turn for the worse.
  15. Primary day here in Texas, where the expected voter turnout will probably be less than 10 percent.
  16. Thanks everyone. I appreciate it. I think everything will be okay.
  17. Thanks. Although, apparently it's the one cancer to get if you had to choose one. Isn't necessarily that, though. We'll see.
  18. I may have testicular cancer. We'll see next week after a biopsy.
  19. I'm not sure why anyone chooses to willfully ignore amazing scientific discoveries.
  20. Amazing as in "this satirical piece of news is fairly amusing"?
  21. I live outside of Fort Worth and it has been big news here. Combined with the Josh Brent story, there has been a lot of justified outrage over it.
  22. Thanks. I was having trouble putting it into words. Also, this creationism vs. evolution "debate" generally centers around one thing: teaching creationism in schools, where it has no place. It shouldn't come down to a science vs. religion discussion. Somehow, it always does, though. And this is why so many people still don't "believe" in evolution. It has been presented to them by creationists as an attack on religion. And, forced to pick sides, they choose God. Not realizing that the two are not related.
  23. The problem is that these are two separate conversations. The origin of our universe has nothing to do with evolution. Evolution is observed through the fossil record and explains how life on this planet came to be after everything began. Evolution is true. Our planet is old. Our universe is older. Creationism is proven false. It's also frustrating how evolution gets painted as something that is anti-religion. The two can coexist peacefully.
