  1. This is a total memory of childhood for me, hearing this on AM radio in the car when my mom was driving. The chorus is imprinted in my memory for life.
  2. Did you listen to the audio of Mavis' message? Too adorable. http://www.newportfolk.org/lineup/sunday/jeff-tweedy I can't even stand myself today, I'm so excited.
  3. OK, you've all inspired me. I've set aside tomorrow for some emergency-level cleaning, but will go tomorrow night if I get most of it accomplished during the day. Love Wes Anderson's films, especially Rushmore.
  4. This interview is OK. I love Jason Isbell (drove up to Madison, WI from Chicago in February with a friend just to see him). This interview with Terry Gross of Fresh Air is better. http://www.npr.org/2013/07/17/202369759/jason-isbell-locates-his-musical-compass-on-southeastern I like him because he is a smart man, a clever songwriter, and what an astounding voice.
  5. Wowza! That is a pretty big scheduling coup for Pittsburgh. I was actually at the Three Rivers Arts Festival last year, while visiting my mom, who lives there. It tends to draw a huge crowd, especially when the weather's nice.
  6. I'm in! I'll be there on my own, and staying at the Jailhouse Inn in town. Most likely, I'll drive down friday morning from Vermont, after spending a few days with my sister's family. Very much looking forward to it.
  7. I can be happy with the Newport lineup as is, which features some of my favorites (Mavis, The Milk Carton Kids, Nickel Creek, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Dawes and Conor Oberst, Aoife O'Donovan, Trampled by Turtles, Phox, and so on) so I will be content regardless, but Jeff Tweedy would be the perfect capper.
  8. Man, that would be so perfect. I've got my fingers crossed.
  9. Thanks for the updated list. I'm going to the Nels Cline Singers show in Evanston, and really really hoping Tweedy will make an appearance at Newport Folk Fest, since they are doing a "75 Years of Mavis" tribute over the weekend. It's shaking up to be epic.
  10. Marshall Crenshaw and the Bottle Rockets.
  11. So many great moments tonight, with many rarities, as you can see from the setlist. I was thinking in the middle "I hope I can get a recording of this." Pink Moon sounded great! Jeff prefaced "Kicking Television" by saying it would be awful on acoustic, but the guitar part was downright rocking (ok, there's not much of a lyric to speak of, but still.) I've always loved "One True Vine" and it sounded lovely live. Last night was great, but thought the setlist tonight was exceptional.
  12. Such a fun time. That Zeppelin song was the weirdest singalong I've ever heard. Only 21 hours until the next one!
  13. Remember when we were complaining about how structurally lousy the Concord Music Hall is? So...the roof caved in last week. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2014-02-08/news/chi-3-men-hospitalized-after-club-partial-ceiling-collapse-20140208_1_ceiling-collapse-loud-music-third-floor Thank God at least it will get a thorough inspection.
  14. Sincere good wishes to Susan and the whole Tweedy family. Wishing nothing but the very best for your health and happiness.
  15. Tomorrow, driving up to lovely Madison, WI to see Jason Isbell.
  16. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Also really really hoping the Nickel Creek reunion tour goes through Newport round about July.
  17. Newport Folk Festival just announced their first artist for this summer...Mavis Staples & Friends celebrating 75 years of Mavis throughout the weekend. Wonder who the friends might include? Feeling very happy that I have my ticket just now! http://www.newportfolk.org/lineup/sunday/mavis-staples
  18. Very excited about this! Hope they play Newport.
  19. Patty Griffin tonight. Califone tomorrow if I can get there (snow -- ugh).
  20. I enjoy the Grammys for the spectacle of it, though few of my favorites were nominated and none actually won. The pre-televised awards presentations were available online, and that show was a blast! Cyndi Lauper hosted in the most endearing, error-prone, scatterbrained way. A hot mess in the most entertaining fashion. There were a few very diverse killer performances too -- the classical choral group Roomful of Teeth were otherworldly. The winners of the Americana, folk, and alternative categories were pretty much who you would guess (the oldest/most famous seemed to win each one). In
  21. I always thought that "I will turn on you" was just another way of saying "I will turn you on." Agree with the sexy as hell assessment.
  22. Got a notice from the City Winery mailing list in Chicago that Jay Farrar's playing 2 solo dates here in April. Looks like some other towns too. Bought a ticket for the Friday Chicago show. Thought it was worth giving a heads-up to others who might want to see him solo. http://www.jayfarrar.net/tour/ City Winery's kind of a classy room with cheap tickets (like $25) and an expensive and fancy menu, and they try to get you in there early to run up a hefty food and beverage tab. Had some pork belly with mole last time I was there (seeing Calexico) that I still have dreams about. Mmmmm. Mo
  23. Last year, I stayed at the Hampton Inn in Bennington, VT. It made sense for me since I was driving down from Burlington, VT, where I have family, and my brother-in-law tagged along for the first day. It's far out (maybe a 20-30 min drive) but honestly, there was no traffic and close, free parking was easy, since I got there pretty early each day. Not pricey, perfectly nice and safe, middle-of-nowhere. A few good casual restaurants/pubs in town as well. Saw lots of other wristbands at the free daily breakfast. Once the N. Adams places are booked, I don't think it's such a bad option to st
