  1. Yeah, bummer to read that first thing this morning. I first heard of him thanks to John Belushi with the Blue Bros. He really made Duck and Steve Cropper household names for a few minutes all the way back in the 70s...
  2. http://www.washingto...exLU_story.html
  3. Just saw them in September, so I am only going to my local show here in sunny Tampa.
  4. I never would have dreamed that this thread would extend beyond one page. Probably helps that I added the setlist and posted a bunch of times too, but still....
  5. Honesty, I don't even know who is who in that band, other than Brian. I know they have a lot of turbulent history, but was never enough of a fan(atic) to absorb all the details. Just passing along a concert review.
  6. This was the best shot I got of them...toward the end with Brian Wilson on his feet. I was surprised he actually strapped on a guitar.
  7. I think it was about 2 hours altogether, maybe a little longer. There was an intermission, so I lost track of the actual time playing. I forgot to give props to Mike Love, too. They all sounded pretty damn good, for the most part.
  8. By the way, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston sounded surprisingly good for the most part. I mean, I didn't know what to expect from them, and was pleasantly surprised, especially by Al.
  9. Thanks, A-Man. Here is the setlist, btw. 10. Geezer rock! Okay, so Brian Wilson doesn't sound like he did in 1967. But hell, Brian wasn't even the one with the "prettiest" voice. That was Carl, or maybe Mike Love. I know it wasn't Dennis, but a few of these guys are no longer with us, so what you get, for the 50th anniversary tour (gulp) is a band comprised of the remaining Beach Boys and about 10 or 12 other people. I shit you not, I counted the number of people onstage at one point, and I think it was 16. Two drummers, horns, some younger dudes to supplement the vocals and play maracas and whatnot...this is not your mother's Beach Bo
  11. Beach Boys in 7 minutes at Straz Center.
  12. Actually, ranting against their choice of Debra Kadabra over Inca Roads would make sense in my book, but it's not that important. The inclusion of FZ makes me happier (less unhappy?) with the list, but I would only be positive about it if they also included Bruce Cockburn. He's not exactly a household name either, and has been a true guitar hero since about 1970. James "Blood" Ulmer is cool, but would not even make my top 100. Sonny Sharrock? I don't know, if you're going to go in the jazz direction, why not Terje Rypdal? Or hell, Grant Green? The best thing about this list is the comments sec
  13. Show how much attention I paid. LOL Still, Zappa is ranked below The Edge, Kurt Cobain, and Johnny Ramone. For that reason alone, I give the list (overall) a thumbs down.
  14. I have extensive knowledge of guitarists and most of the people on this list are pretty lousy, in my opinion. It's a matter of personal taste. But thanks for attempting to evaluate my level of knowledge. I am sure you are far more knowledgeable than me about it.
  15. Actually, I have seen Wilco a bunch of times with Nels, and I tolerate him...but don't love him. As for being old and cranky - I'll give you old and cranky now - these jackasses actually put the phrase "Shut Up And Play Yer Guitar" at the beginning of the article, but no one thought to include Frank Zappa anywhere in their top 100 list? That list is the biggest pile of shit I have ever seen. There's your old and cranky.
  16. That list is an excellent example of why the term hipster is used as a dis. The only good thing I could find on it was the inclusion of Syd Barrett...which, unfortunately, also undercuts their whole premise, as Syd was recording as early as 1965.
  17. I was totally not into the Wake Up The Nation CD, and based on the sound clips I have heard, I will take a pass on this one. I love most of his stuff from the Style Council days through As Is Now, but I just don't like the direction he has taken since then. Not production-wise, not song-wise. Not at all. Happy if someone else digs it, but I don't.
  18. Still got a few to look forward to... May 5: Beach Boys 50th Reunion Tour in Tampa May 14: Wilco in Tampa July 24: Dukes of September in Clearwater (Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs & Michael McDonald)
  19. These are no longer available. Sold and shipped.
  20. Finally got mine today in the mail. Looking forward to listening to the thing in its entirety over the next few days. I would have settled for downloading disc 3, but I didn't have an original copy of Vol. 1, so this is fine. Nice to have the Man in the Sand doc on DVD as well. Nice booklet included with all the lyrics. Overall, a very satisfactory package.
  21. Before The Black Crowes covered this, a LOT of people thought this was a Grateful Dead original. Otis who? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bD_36cuiXvU
  22. I'm thinking maybe he was threatening to kill himself, in which case...GO FOR IT, TEDDY BOY! I'LL EVEN HAND YOU A GUN!
  23. RIP, Levon http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/19/levon-helm-dead-the-band-cancer-battle_n_1434772.html
  24. Rob Portman's name seems to be getting floated quite a bit out there in the blogosphere. I also read a column today that suggested Olympia Snowe. Interesting idea. It would alienate the Tea Partiers, but would certainly make people feel more confident that Rom-Bot is really a moderate and not the batshit type he has been posing as for the last few months...
