  1. Yes, Ray LaMontagne's "Jolene" is a different song. Might also want to look into a band out of the Carolinas in the early-mid 90's called Jolene. Very solid, slightly-twangy-nearly-Buffalo-Tom guitar rock.
  2. If DRM is that big of a deal to you, you must already know about burning a CD, then reimporting it, right?
  3. "Windy" - The Association "Highly Suspicious" - My Morning Jacket (odd, they have at least 4 songs that would be in my "best song ever" post) "Rockstar" - Nickelback (had to look this one up to figure out who sang it)
  4. Aimee Mann's "I'm With Stupid" is a pretty awesome, vitriolic break-up album, and nothing at all what you'd expect from a break-up album by a woman. No cliche Alanis or Lilith Fair crap here. And, Jon Brion produced it. Check it out!
  5. September 67 was great. They put one fantastic album out and then started making babies (or something). 2 Skinnee J's were/are the best live band I have ever seen. Butter 08 were pretty awesome too. Yeah, I think you're not looking hard enough.
  6. Blinking Lights wouldn't be too bad of a place to start either, if you could whittle it down a bit. Lots of hidden gems in that one. Electro-Shock Blues was my first album by them, too. Next up E's memoir?
  7. Saw Ryan Adams after he cleaned up, and it is one of the best shows I have seen/heard.
  8. Did sound for him a year and half ago, and have never seen an artist so in contempt of his audience. The guy was insufferable!
  9. Those of you in Chicagoland could help me out with this: is it typical for XRT to advertise Matthew Sweet playing "live on air at noon" and it be 12:44 and he's still not playing? Perhaps this is what I get for trying to tune into 90's promotional concepts in an increasingly digital world... these commercials are killing me
  10. It's worth noting that in the demos overall, Ken Coomer plays on a few songs, not only Jay Bennett asserting his vision, and getting reigned in. The album was recorded, and then basically transformed. Big ups for leaking the studio process. Someday I hope there is a multi-faceted version complete with studio banter a la the Pet Sounds Boxset. Very glad Wilco do not have a Murry Wilson hanging over them!
  11. Billy Bragg and Wilco, Mermaid Avenue, Vol. 2
  12. you be the judge: http://www.manuelcamacho.com/49ers.mp3 http://www.metacafe.com/watch/69344/super_bowl_shuffle/ actually, the Bears have solo's (Walter Peyton boasting of his sexual prowess) and a ton of visuals. Video kills the radio star, always.
  13. "What of the people who don't have what I ain't got? Are they victims of my leisure" d. boon
  14. I think the Beach Boys' self/family management situation/void set up the bitter animosity between them, and messed up situations, that made them rather work outside of their situation, whereas the Beatles weren't related so their split was "easier." It's comical and sad how territorial they have been with the name and legacy.
  15. Saw this on Sundance last night. Highly recommended. If not only for footage of the Traveling Wilbury's in the studio. someone already said this, but it'll be on again this Saturday at 2pm ET on Sundance Channel
  16. Jim Eno is also the drummer from Spoon, apparently.
  17. Saw them at their 4 last shows, then again at their reunion benefit for Callum Robbins at the Black Cat in DC (April 2007). I have to say, nothing prepared me for seeing this band live in top form. When they were breaking up they were tired and the cracks started showing. Given 4 years off, the band was freaking out the crowd was freaking out the band was freaking out the crowd was freaking out the band
  18. off topic, but still kind of funny: I used to drive a VW and the 3 note chime to remind me to put my seat belt on after turning the engine over worked its way, very prominently, into the main riff of one of our last songs. Sadly, they never asked ME to contribute songs for an ad campaign!
  19. Every show i have been to at Merriweather has been wracked by traffic (but then again, I was arriving from the south a la D.C.) Leave early, arrive early. Or, leave late, arrive whenever. Be warned!
  20. Is that Gene Simmons riding a Unicorn?
  21. Pacific Northwest is also showing Saturday morning at 8:30 on Sundance. Get your bean on!
  22. Depends what you like about Elliott's material. Those two albums really run the gamut of Elliott Smith's stylistic reach. I'd say if you like the "rockier" and more produced moments of Basement, definitely get Figure 8 (and then XO too). These albums are somewhat more "upbeat" than the earlier stuff (read: fans shouting "sell-out!" after the switch) If you like the quieter moments of Basement, and the stark production of the self-titled one, go ahead and get Roman Candle and Either/Or. You really can't go wrong, it just depends what mood you're wanting. Or just go ahead and buy them all, b
  23. Pot shots at generally revered records are amusing. I put these up there with actors turned political pundits. Sure I listen to them, but take 'em with a grain of salt. After all, even monkeys can have opinions (and coincidentally 100 of them can be put a room with a typewriter and eventually type out "War and Peace")
  24. That is exactly what I was going to say, that the true draw of the Kinks is songwriting. And I don't even catch all the colloquialisms, growing up in the states and all. I actually love the "vintage" sound of the Kinks. Shows you what kind of aesthetic having no money can achieve! I second the nod to "The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society" and then once you get into all the late 60's stuff, check out some of the rock opera stuff Davies got into in the 70's. Amazing it all came from the same guy!
