  1. I would strongly suggest anyone looking into this era to get any of the Kinks records between "Something Else By The Kinks" (1967) and "Muswell Hillbillies" (1971). These records aren't quite as "precious" as Odessey and Oracle, but have Ray Davies unable to tour the states, looking at everything from British-ness to record industry politik. I would love to know what was in the water in Britain in the late 60's! (and by that, I mean other than acid)
  2. I've got the 2004 reissue, but since I don't have anything else by them this one suits me (you know, how would you compare versions if you only have one?) Sound quality-wise it is excellent!
  3. Selling out doesn't exist anymore! You are saying you would rather have this band toil in impoverished obscurity than be able to make money from their music, to enable them to make more music. All to satisfy your definition of what a band is supposed to be. That's a pretty selfish way to approach a band. Moreoever, the individuals in the band. There are so few channels to actually make money if you are in a band, and touring is increasingly NOT one of them. Nor are CD sales. I don't know this band, but I am sure they are thrilled to not have you to impress anymore. (and you do realize th
  4. My favorite part of Emerick's book is the bit about groupies breaking in and running amok at Abbey Road screaming and crying before tracking "She Loves You." You can really hear the results in that recording! The band was vamping! Edit: and also the tracking of the drums for "Tomorrow Never Knows" too.
  5. I am glad that Jeff Tweedy didn't have to go through the monstrous rehab that Elliott did, which may have left him with the numbness in his arm. Basically, they implanted a catheter in his arm and put him on a saline drip. During this treatment he was so weak he could barely even grip a glass of water. Ugh. Interesting point of comparison that kind of sheds new light on Sky Blue Sky for the haters.
  6. The three things you list as being prime reasons to not like "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" miss the one crucial reason it has so resonated: heart. But back to Beulah, anyone else open this thread and wonder if they'd be getting on the reunion train too (albeit a little soon)? I discovered them about 2 months too late!
  7. Newspaper mistakes DO happen all the time. If the New York Times could employ Jayson Blair for 5 years, and the SF Gate is just spending it's journalistic cred on Wilco, which is worse? At least it's doing so on Wilco, and not on that american idol trash.
  8. For those who do not want to click the link, flame on. This was once written in a Rolling Stone review of the classic Neil Young album After the Goldrush: "Neil Young devotees will probably spend the next few weeks trying desperately to convince themselves that After the Gold Rush is good music. But they'll be kidding themselves. For despite the fact that the album contains some potentially first rate material, none of the songs here rise above the uniformly dull surface." (This of course proved to be far, far from the truth, as this went on to be named--numerous places--as one of th
  9. I bought my copy at a small indie retailer in Philly that is so cool it didn't even carry the bonus disc. Take that! (and they also wear out The F'ng Champs record, which puts Shake It Off's noodling to shame) erm, of course, it is on the radar enough that it does get decent distribution.
  10. Anyone else think it's weird that he talks about how he'll be coming back to "The Search" but skipping the first track? That's the thing with bands getting a higher profile: worse writing. That's the good thing about Wilco getting a higher profile: higher probability of a good ole fashion Tweedy reporter tongue lashing (that malapropism sounds better spoken! oh well)
  11. I have to say, after 3 months of holding off, the biggest gift to myself was the circumstances under which I listened to the record for the first time: 4pm on a Tuesday, driving out of Philadelphia via Ridge Ave. which takes you up and over the gentle hills surrounding Philly to the north, near those gargantuan radio towers on a nearly cloudless, breezy, 75 degree afternoon. I really dig the positive vibe of this record, though admittedly I haven't gotten "into" some of the later "Steely Dan" sounds. I plan on giving the record a thorough headphone listen this weekend. Glenn is noticably r
  12. Can we nominate Maddie Hope for some kind of award? Seriously, posting MP3's on yousendit is one thing, but giving VCers your log-in cred? MVP. (Did anyone else see the portion of the article explaining that there is a completely separate mix that Jim O'Rourke did that the band shelved?!? Sweet!)
  13. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4258547 This seems appropriate. It's the NPR story where they play two Nickelback songs simultaneously, one in each channel. And to keep this Wilco related, anyone try putting the two versions of Hummingbird or the 28 versions of Kamera on at the same time?
  14. I should have qualified my post with saying their show would be devoid of guitars too. I do know what Unplugged implies, and by definition, the artists are all plugged in technically. I just want something different, not some dude and guitar. We've all been there.
  15. I think what made the Nirvana unplugged so great (and arguably their best album) was that it was so anomalous for them. I read some Dave Grohl interview where Kurt kept on telling him to play softer, almost imperceptible. Meanwhile, hearing Kurt's voice so clearly, he haunted those songs. All Apologies was devastating! So, I'd like to see them do an "Unplugged" with synths, mellotrons, optigans, chamberlins, wurlitzers, moogs and organs with Glenn on a percussion kit made completely of found objects. That would be pretty cool, something like "The Yankee Hotel Foxtrot Orchestra Deconstructs S
  16. There's a paragraph in that article especially for all of you Music Therapists out there! I loved the dark vibe on Summerteeth, but I am really digging how palpable the positivity is with this one.
  17. I can't seem to get the stream of SBS to work for me. The quicktime file opens, but all birds art and no sound. I will take this as a sign that I should hold my horses and wait for the physical product release and not mess with streams, downloads, or leaks.
  18. Walnut Creek Amphitheater, Raleigh North Carolina 8/27/1999 opening for REM Skipped whisky and fried chicken in the parking lot as soon as Wilco hit the stage. My friends kept tailgating, but I was deep into Summerteeth at that point. Once I heard the opening notes to "Can't Stand It" I couldn't get in soon enough. my dad actually met the band that previous July (1999) in Zurich, Switzerland as they were flying home from the European leg of the REM tour. He saw two guys, one in "Buddy Holly glasses" and saw a guitar case with WILCO spray painted on it. When asking if they were that band,

  21. I don't get all this slagging of the Shins live. They are not MMJ, nor do they pretend to be. Perhaps everyone took Zach Braff's screenwriting too literally! I saw them at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia Tuesday, March 13 (the night before MSG) and they seemed on. The new material is much more dense then their other records, so I have to admit the first fifth of the show was icy (with the exception of Sleeping Lessons and it's excellent build up and crescendo!)
  22. I think it sounds like nothing. Oh that's right, I'm still trying to get it! Anyone want to hook a brother up here? YSI, email, what have you
  23. Thank you in advance to anyone who can facilitate just *one* more request for the SBS leak. I was being helped this morning, but it didn't work out. Maybe someone who got the album from someone else could help me out? y'all been working overtime, mc
  24. I've surfed around various MP3 blogs looking for a complete leak of Sky Blue Sky and have not found one. Does it exist? Could someone enlighten me as to where I could find this? I couldn't even cobble together the tracks either at elbo.ws or hype machine. I should preface this with saying I am going to buy the record when it comes out. It's just that the wife and I are about to make a 6 hour car trip, and would love nothing more than to listen to this diminished-quality Sky Blue Sky I know some of you have it. There you go.
  25. Sloan is basically power-pop, with loads of influences (beatles, stones, who, big star, ac/dc on and on) I love the fact that Sloan wears their influences on their sleeves. It makes for interesting listening, when you get into other older material (particularly 70's rock) and realize how much Sloan has borrowed. But that isn't a slight. There is a certain Sloan-ness that brings it all together and brings you back for more. That being said, iTunes the two new songs from A-sides and don't bother with the rest of the comp unless you want the DVD footage, if you can still find it. Sloan albu
