  1. The accordian guy said he had just gotten sick at the show in Knoxville two days before. Maybe they were feeling rough and inhospitable. Glad you enjoyed Athens. I wish my Athens experiences were more like that, but they typically involve idfentity theft, car break downs, Counting Crowes concerts and trying to sleep at the houses of psychotic high school ex-friends. I wonder if Nels checked out the Dino Jr. show. I know they played together a few times on a Mike Watt tour.
  2. Same in Atlanta, or used to be anyway. They called themselves "NOB". A bunch of white yahoos. You can probably guess what the N stands for (the OB stands for "On Bikes"). So clever and ironic. These dicks used to go around beating up cyclists who wear helmets.
  3. At my catholic high school, the track coach got one of the girls on the track team pregnant. He got fired. I think they got married and had the kid, then they divorced. So catholic of them. At the public high school I went to before I went to catholic school one of the female teachers was rumored to have a tradition of taking a male student to Florida every year. She wound up getting fired, too. EDIT: Both of these scenarios occurred in the mid to late '80s.
  4. I'm almost certain the pickups are the same size as a Gibson humbucker. The black switches are the coil tap, one for each pickup. Thanks for the info. I'll look into the Duncans.
  5. The Dead using setlists? Wasn't a main part of their charm the fact that they didn't use setlists?
  6. I think they went on within a few mionutes of 9 in Knoxville. The opening band went on right at 8.
  7. I'm not totally set on Gibson pickups, they just seem like the easy/obvious choice since the guitar currently has low quality copies of a Gibson humbucker. I'm leaning towards humbuckers, but I'm also considering P90s. TV Jones Gretsch style pickups are intriguing, too.
  8. Jeff played a Strat in Knoxville on one song. I can't remember which song it was, and I don't recall seeing him play a Strat at any other show. Anyone have any details on the Strat?
  9. I live an hour from Athens, and I would go to Chicago, or just about anywhere else for that matter, to see them before I'd go to Athens. I hate that town and that venue sounds like a dump.
  10. That is an awesome photo. I was over by the flower pot lantern.
  11. We made it to the Knoxville show. The Tennessee theater is an amazing place. I enjoyed the opening band for a few songs, then it became repetitive. That's a talented bunch, but I think I would have enjoyed them more if one or more of their band members were multi-instrumentalists. The instrumentation seemed to lock them into too narrow of a sound. As for Wilco, I think this was the most enjoyable show I've seen them do. I liked the setlist, and for the first time I was able to pay attention to each members contribution to the overall sound. That's something that has been fascinating t
  12. I went to Kentucky once with some friends to see the dead in 1993. For a little while we were behind a pickup truck that had the lettering on the trunk hatch changed from Toyota (or whatever it was) to PANIC. We thought that was pretty cool.
  13. I saw him last year and I'll probaly be seeing him again in a few weeks. He still plays great, and as an added bonus he has Billy Ficca on drums. I thought he put on a really good show, but based on his between song banter one might reasonably conclude that he intends to off himself in the parking lot after the show.
  14. Yeah, I suppose I agree The Chain doesn't really fit now that I reread the original post. If I recall, the part that starts with the unaccompanied bass was supposed to be another song, but they tagged it onto the end of what we now know as The Chain, making it sort of suite-like to my ears, but not to the criteria of this thread.
  15. Oh, so maybe this would've been more appropriate...
  16. The small print says they'll only sign the first 150 DVDs sold. DVDs go on sale at 9 am. Laminates will be given to the purchasers, and will serve as your ticket to the signing. Only one DVD will be signed per purchaser.
  17. I was born a little north of Boston, but have lived almost my whole life in Atlanta. Most of my friends that I used to go see the ABB with called the them "the brothers". I think I did too, back then (the '90s Warren & Dicky era). Now I call them the Allmans. Maybe I'm becoming more northern. Northerners refer to Widespread Panic as Panic? Interesting. I guess that makes more sense than just calling them Widespread, which is how I most often hear people refer to them. That's sort of like referring to the Dead as Grateful.

  19. They say code won't allow those windows anymore. I guess it never occurred to them that they could take good windows from lower floors or inconspicuous spaces and use them to replace broken windows in higher floors (and higher priced hotel rooms), allowing better views from more rooms and making the building appear to be fixed when viewed from any distance, or as part of the skyline as a whole. As it is, no matter where you look at the building from, it looks fucked up.
  20. I don't know about this. When Derek comes around with his band, he plays venues similar in size to what Wilco plays. I think his goal is just to play music he likes with people he likes and make an honest living doing it. I doubt he's particularly concerned with "getting big". As for what else is he going to do...well, he did play in Clapton's band and his own band was asked by Carlos Santana to open a string of dates. He also played an inaugural ball for Obama, and recently worked with a bunch of jazz artists including McCoy Tyner, Ron Carter, Jack Dejohnette and Wynton Marsalis. That's
