  1. Maxim started showing up at my house a couple years ago. Talk about a shitty magazine, Bijou Phillips photos notwithstanding. I think it's pretty common if you have a subscription to one magazine to start getting free issues of other magazines from the same parent company. The rationale is that you will eventually feel guilty and pay for a subscription. This is related to what my college journalism teacher said was called "Tilforbid"...in which whatever magazine you subscribe to keeps sending you magazines after your sub runs out until you forbid them to send you any more. Even if you
  2. I'd rather see Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Curly.
  3. That one's hard for me to get into. It always strikes me as morose, especially after so many joyous sounding tunes (musically, if not always lyrically) on Village Green and Arthur, which I got into shortly before Muswell Hillbillies. Maybe someday it'll click for me. Actualy, maybe it will now. I haven't played it in over a year.
  4. There's something about old timers in the music business. The Allmans had impeccable taste in music when they were starting out, but now, maybe not so much. I'm sure if you asked Ray Davies, or Brian Wilson, or Paul McCartney to name five current artists that they like you'd probaly wind up with a list of the 23 or 24 (edit, oops my math fucking sucks) shittiest bands going, with one or two decent ones thrown in just by chance.
  5. What's the "2"? There are still three original band members.
  6. I've seen Belew in concert a few times. The first was on Bowie's Sound and Vision tour. I remember him breaking strings on almost every song. Kind of a strange and somewhat disappointing show. A very bizarre choice of songs, considering it was supposed to be Bowie's last time performing his older material. Then I saw two nights of the King Crimson double trio on the Thrak tour. Amazing shows! Most recently I saw him with King Crimson on the Construction of Light tour. That one wasn't so hot, but I mostly blame that on the drummer (Pat Mastelotto), who I feel can't cut it as the only
  7. Yup, Talking Heads and Zappa, too. My favorite album of his is Lone Rhino. I guess I've only heard that one and Twang Bar King, though. Not a very thorough sampling of his solo work.
  8. Were you expecting them to be big fans of Radiohead, or something?
  9. They should get rid of that awful singer.
  10. They play that on one of the Bonaroo dvds. Pretty awesome version.
  11. In the same way that Daughtry is rock.
  12. Camper Van Beethoven did Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk". Petra Haden did an acapella version of The Who's "Sell Out". Brian Wilson's "Smile".
  13. Bowie played a small club in Atlanta in the late '90s. I missed that one. I missed two chances to see Mike Watt with Nels (but I saw them together two other times, so that's not an enormous tragedy). I missed all but the last 30 seconds of Firehose's set opening for the Beastie Boys on the Check Your Head tour. I was busy drinking beer in the parking lot, assuming I was missing the first band (Basehead...thankfully, I did miss them). I passed on the Allmans for the last several years. I'm hoping to remedy that this year. I stupidly passed on several chances to see Yes when they ha
  14. That same guy told me that Albert Lee grabbed him by the throat* once when he popped into Ten Years After's dressing room uninvited to see if they needed any more snacks or beer, so maybe he learned to respect the boundaries between stage hand and rock star. *Bill Graham withheld their pay until Albert Lee apologized.
  15. He said he "got to see one", but he would not admit to opening any cases or touching any of them. He's a really good guitarist, and vintage/classic guitar enthusiast (not that those guitars were "vintage" at the time) so I find it hard to believe he didn't at least open some cases and take a peak.
  16. Who, Derek? That's cool that he's getting some mainstream attention. The guy is just amazing. Here's a fresh one from All About Jazz (I may have already posted this link, if so, apologies): http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=31943
  17. My old boss used to be a stagehand for Bill Graham in the early/mid '70s. He once slept in a room full of the Who's equipment during the era in which Townshend had his numbered Les Pauls. How much self-control would it take to not open those cases? How could you sleep?
  18. What, they're too god to pee on the ground like everyone else's security guards?
  19. Pretty much any band would have overshadowed that Stones performance. They were pretty crappy that day. The Stones should have filmed their set before spending several days hanging out with Keith Moon. But yeah, The Who were ridiculous in that film. Just unreal.

    Opinion Poll

Ditched you just to get "a couple rows" closer? That's pretty lame. Were you trying to converse with this person during the show? Or was she trying to converse with you and you told her to shut up? I have and will continue to ditch people at shows if they try to talk to me the whole time the band is playing. I don't go see live music all that much anymore, and when I do go, the last thing I want to do is have a conversation or a running commentary spewed into my ear while the band is playing. I've never ditched someone at an assigned seating or advance ticket type of show, though. Did
