    Dresden

I think Jeff just started to realize that the more he egged them on, the more loud and obnoxious they were going to get, so he stopped. From my vantage point, that was kind of the gist of the look that Nels gave Jeff. Actually, the hooting and hollering wasn't that obnoxious, really. I think part of what Jeff meant with the whole "we come over here to get away from you people" statement was just that that sort of stuff happens all the time in America and maybe being in Europe, there's some hope that it won't be as prevalent over here. That is to say that one of the main reasons the band play
  2. no, to clear up any misunderstanding, it was with the whole band. i just noted jeff and nels because jeff has played the song with both electric and acoustic guitars and nels has played it with electric versus lap steel, so i wanted to note the variation. pat also stepped out to "the front line" with an electric guitar for that one, which is what he has been doing. the other guys played their normal roles, and quite nicely i might add...
  3. Just a couple of other notes from the show last night... --On And On And On was originally slated to be the first song of the second encore, but Jeff changed the order after he came out and said what a sweet audience the Dresden crowd had been. A very earnest German fan replied, "So does that mean we can get some Calee--four--nee-a Starss?" Jeff then said something like "Well, that wasn't on the original plan, but we might be able to get to it." To which the German guy replied, "It's OK, we can wait." They eventually got to it. --They've been working on Why Would You Wanna Live for a coupl
  4. That's what I've been told. I keep meaning to, honestly!
  5. Since you asked, I've really enjoyed the set she's been doing. With some slight variations in order from night to night, it's basically been a five/six song rotation of: -Marmalade (with Bobb Bruno on bass) -Times Square (with Nels Cline on guitar) -new song [i think] (with Nels Cline on guitar) -Nels' Box>Pissing (with Nels Cline on guitar, Bobb Bruno on bass and Glenn Kotche on percussion) -Baby, That's The Creeps (with Mike Jorgensen on keyboards) For me, Times Square has been a highlight. I know that they've done that song a fair bit in the past, but I'll just say that it's really s

  9. I took down the setlist for that one. It's accurate, believe me. The recording of the show that is circulating was almost certainly done by my friend, a noted NYC taper. If so, it's an audience recording but a high quality one because I remember him bringing in his rig and good mics that night. It was a sweet show.
  10. I raise a glass to you, Lou. Happy birthday!
  11. I didn't see this posted anywhere yet, so I figured I'd throw it up here... Apparently there will be a Chicago-area show around the album release date after all. It just won't be open to the public, at least according to today's Daily Northwestern: I almost certainly can't make it, but as an alum, I wonder how they'll deal with it when NU people invariably buy tickets for their non-NU friends. I remember when Jeff did that solo show a couple years ago at Pick-Staiger and there was that whole shitstorm between people who had NU IDs and those who didn't. I guess they're hoping to avoid tha
  12. That was such a fun trip. Thanks for the ride(s) and the beer education, Bridget! If there is a Red Rocks show sometime this year, we all *so* need to have a reunion. I'll bring the moldy cheese!

What am I doing in that picture? God only knows.
  14. Aw, man. I literally just found out now. What a loss. I mean, it's better that he isn't suffering anymore, but he was such a giant. I feel fortunate to have been at that free performance at Trinity Church a few weeks ago that Nels referred to in his eloquent note on his Web site. I'm pretty sure it was Mr. Hill's final public appearance because I know he had canceled a couple of scheduled live tapings at Birdland at the end of March. And I also feel so fortunate to have been able to see that show at the SF Jazz Festival last year where Nels and his group opened for Andrew and his group. Sens
  15. You seem a bit angry about Nels. Or maybe you're just mad at Hixter.
  16. I dunno about the record because I've only heard it once (conscious decision), but in the live arrangement, which I have to think is the same as the studio version, it's Nels who has the initial solo and then Jeff and Pat come in with the counterpoint later.
  17. I haven't read the BV post(s), but I would think maybe the McCarren Pool series is a possibility if they're really gonna play Brooklyn. Don't they pack at least a couple thousand people in there?
  18. I'm pretty stoked for Los Campesinos!
  19. Hey Dave-- Happiest of birthdays, my friend! Hope we get to see each other in June, if not sooner... In the meantime, I raise a glass of (insert something good here) to you! Cheers. Paul.
  20. I would say Muskie's, but it's not there anymore. The site of one of the first big VC meetups, I believe. Duck Walk is a pretty good Thai place just around the corner from the Vic.
  21. for the record, i was nowhere near this show!

    US dates

I hear there's an abbey there (no, not the Abbey Pub). And speaking of Abbys, Laura, do you think Ms. V could be coerced into venturing back toward the homeland?
  23. Hope you have a wonderful (minor holiday) birthday, Judes! I raise a pint o' Guinness to you!
  24. ...and then gave it about three elbow drops and a head butt.
  25. I love it! Sterry Butcher of the Big Bend Sentinel gets the freelance gig for No Dep... And speaking of Marfa, the Liberty Music Hall made it into this month's Esquire --as the best small music venue in America (or something like that). For Heidi, 9:30 was Esquire's overall best venue. Good taste.
