Wilco -- 4/23/15, Houston, TX (Bayou Music Center)

Indeed, it was. -
I'm working on little to no sleep, so this might be a bit of a shorter recap than usual. At any rate, not a huge amount to say except that in its first performance of 2015, the band seemed to pick up almost right where it left off at the Winterlude run in Chicago last December. That meant the fortunate Dallas crowd got to witness firsthand some of the great things about this 20th anniversary tour — namely, a few rarities from the box set, some deeper album cuts, the hootenanny encore. It certainly seems like that will be the general blueprint for at least this next run of Wilco shows moving

You'd probably do well to buy the digital-only collection called 50 Vc. Doberman which I think is still available on his Web site. It's a lot of music, but pretty worthwhile IMHO. His most recent studio record on Bloodshot (the title escapes me at the moment) is good as well.

I've meant to chime in on this show, but other stuff has always gotten in the way. Ah well, I guess some shows will just live mostly in the memories of those who were there... I do remember Jeff being pissed by the lack of encore response. I've personally heard worse, but for him to comment on it, it must have sounded pretty lackluster. I think we actually lost two encore songs because of it. Solitaire was a cool request, though; glad you stuffed the ballot box successfully. And Hotel Arizona in Arizona always fun, especially the solo version with the audience participation "doo-doos." The

Glad you made it to the show, and thanks for filling in some of the details! Nice to hear from a veteran VCer, as well... I was referring to the Loud, Loud, Loud bit, just because it was so unusual and seemingly out of nowhere. Should've known there would be something offbeat at the last show of a relatively long tour; just wish I'd been able to be there to see it. Apparently they also soundchecked The Four Horsemen from the same record, which I know Jeff has mentioned as being something he listened to when he was younger (maybe a record he inherited from one of his older siblings or someth

I like to think I'm relatively subtle in that regard.

Hey, no problem! It usually doesn't feel like you're making much of a sacrifice after most shows when you're able to get relatively close. Sounds like you'll be just fine at Solid Sound. I'm excited for you! Definitely say hello if see me around and feel like it...would be nice to put a face to a name, or handle (or something).

Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it to Iowa City for last night's finale of the spring TWEEDY tour, and it sounds like there was at least one amazing occurrence that I missed (I can only hope that it gets repeated again someday , and I'd love to hear more details from anyone else who was there )... Also, an odd little coincidence that Glenn Kotche, with cellist Jeffrey Zeigler, is playing at the Englert tonight! That'd be a fun back-to-back. Lucky Iowans! Meanwhile, a little birdie sent me the complete setlist as played...so I'll go ahead and post it to get the ball rolling: Hazel

Joe's Field is indeed a field, but it's a lot smaller than your average fest field; it probably holds like 8,000-10,000 max. What some people do is set up chairs and/or a blanket first thing and then either monitor it throughout the day and/or make friends with groups around them so that there's always someone keeping an eye on the "camp." Or just head over to Joe's Field a few hours before and find a spot. As long as you don't absolutely have to be right on the rail, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. The overlap with other acts isn't too bad, but at the same time I wouldn't expect to

TWEEDY March 29, 2015 - Omaha, NE Sokol Auditorium

All thrown in with a healthy amount of Juan "Soapy" Wauters, right? (God, I was hoping no one beat me to that! ) I don't really have too much to add about the aforementioned, except to say that I think he was received with a relatively open mind by the Omaha crowd (as Mrs. Ol' Boy said). Someone around me said they got a little bit of a Napoleon Dynamite vibe, and someone else said they didn't really know what to make of it but they were entertained. Mr. Wauters didn't have any of the accoutrements he had in Chicago, like his backdrop and flags, etc., so the visual presentation wasn't quite -

Well, H. Stone (or should I call her Mrs. Ol' Boy? ) did a nice job summing up most of the highlights from Banter Corner, so I figured I'd just add my two cents, fwiw... Sometimes it's nice to be with your people. Jeff quickly clarified that to mean "Midwesterners" — he said that when he pulled up the blinds on the bus after they got to Omaha, he looked out and thought it looked exactly like where he's from — but he could just as easily have been talking about an engaged, participatory audience or the kind of people who might go see a show at a venue like Sokol Auditorium. The band has played -

For people who perform live on a regular basis, one thing that must keep things interesting is the audience's reaction night to night. No two audiences really are the same, I guess, and their reactions to what's being performed can vary greatly. As can the expectations a performer might have for an audience. Not being a performer myself, I often wonder what it's like to see a show through one's eyes and how much an audience's reaction affects their performance (and their perception of it). All of which is to say that for me, as an audience member, tonight's crowd was a weird one. A friend re

That's cool that they did True Love Will Find You In The End (I presume that's what "True Love" indicates)! I think it's the first time they've done that. I heard that both Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck joined for the encore. Presumably they came out for California Stars, but did they play on anything else? Of course I've managed to get to a fair number of Tweedy shows, but I've missed every time both Scott and Peter have come out for the encore. I've also yet to see Pigeons, I think. P.S. I'm sure you meant Please Tell My Brother. P.P.S. How did the Minus 5 go over? After all, they we

TWEEDY - 3/22/15 Los Angeles CA - Theatre at Ace Hotel

That's kind of a "boring" setlist relative to some of the others on this run, in that for the solo portion other printed lists I've seen have had amusing phrases in place of the word "Solo." Portland, for instance, had "Sublime Story Telling." And San Diego had, "Madam Butterfly." I think it's just a way for the crew to have a bit of fun with Jeff and the band... -
Try to cope as best you can, Tatlock, for I shall return posthaste...

Personal to Tatlock: Don't delay your cuppa awaiting Santa Fe report tomorrow, for I shall not be present.

Really don't have the time or energy to write anything right now, but figured I'd provide the absolute bare bones first and fill in details later... Who knew Jeff lived in Tucson for a short time when he was in junior high? I guess I had missed that previous disclosure, at any rate. Lawrence W. Cross Middle School, ftw! I think that just isn't Jeff's style, to tell an audience what to do; probably he would rather it happen organically, but often that means it doesn't happen at all. Anyway, this stand-up-sit-down issue usually comes up when Wilco plays seated theaters and I think Jeff just prefers to stay out of it at this point. Because for everyone who wants to stand up and dance, there's someone else who would prefer to stay seated and not have their view blocked, so you can't win. Incidentally, I did see a Ryan Adams show not too long ago when he actually told some kids who had rushed the stage in a se

Don't have time to write a particularly extensive recap, but basically this was the epitome of a "professional show." Which is to say that it was a perfectly fine performance that you'd never be able to tell was lacking anything, unless you'd seen a bunch of other shows to have some sense of perspective. (Sorry, but I can't help thinking of the "Tull's Tips" segment from Conan here — you take Monday night, a seated theater, San Diego vibe, slightly weary band...boom, professional show. ) In short, it was bound to happen at some point during a relatively long tour and all the ingredients wer
