dixiecupdrinker
Promisin' by J.T. 99 Problems by Jay Z (although I prefer the Danger Mouse mash-up dealie). If you're havin' girl problems I feel bad for you sonI got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac anyway, dcd
Dreamin'
Stars Set Yourself on Fire is another great break-up album. Songs: "Dead Flowers" - Rolling Stones"Will to Love" - Neil Young (and at least 50% of the songs on Chrome Dreams that eventually turned up on other albums)"All Things Must Pass" - George Harrison"Ruin My Day" - Jon Brion"Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye" - Leonard Cohen"Let It Die" - Feist "The saddest part of a broken heart Isn't the ending so much as the start." dixiecupdrinker
Another nice Neil tune that somehow fits is "Winterlong". I have a really mellowed out version of Neil playing it on the piano and a harmonica. It is a completely different song that way. If things should ever turn out wrongand all the love we had was goneit won't be easy on that day Oh, and what about "I'm So Tired" from the White Album? I think Lennon captures it pretty good in that one. anyway, dcd
Basil II
Catharsis is good I think, if done in a way thats not indulgent or silly, but progressive and helpful. I'm going through a break-up now, and things are just starting to get real turbulent. On a bright note I managed to compose one of my best mixes in recent memory to comeserate our disunion... Without going into specifics.........I made a mix of music for someone outside of my married life. Someone I am gravitating to......this mix was made in fit of melancholy yesterday.......she got it before leaving for Seattle today. I've been married now over 16 years and all these songs make me want to divorce just to put together the ultimate break-up mix!! (Just kidding dear--she knows I'm AWATT and sometimes checks up on me just to make sure I'm not making a complete fool of myself [she obviously needs to monitor me more closely ].) mountain bed
Shit this one I forgot but definitely needs an airing: Words & Music by John Prine.. Feelings are strangeEspecially when they come trueAnd I had a feelingThat you'd be leaving soonSo I tried to rearrangeAll my emotionsBut it seems the sameNo matter what I do CHORUS Blue umbrellaRest upon my shoulderHide the painWhile the rainMakes up my mindWell,my feet are wetFrom thinking this thing overAnd it's been so longSince I felt the warm sunshineJust give me one good reasonAnd I promise I won't ask you anymoreJust give me one extra seasonSo I can figure out the other four DaytimeMakes me wonder why you left meNighttimeMakes me wonder what I saidNext timeAre the words I'd like to plan onBut,last timeWas the only thing you said.. REPEAT CHORUS I think Prine could have a whole thread to himself, esp. when it comes to this area

Doug
As far as punk rock break-up songs go, it's hard to beat these 3 songs by Jawbreaker, all from the 24 Hour Revenge Therapy album: "Do You Still Hate Me?""Jinx Removing" (a flat-out heart-breaking tune)"In Sadding Around" Don't tell me I'm the only Jawbreaker fan here!!! I know the lyrics are ridiculously naive and simplistic, but there's something about Beatnik Filmstars' "Tearing Apart My World" that always tugged at my heart-strings. Jesusetc84
When my ex dumped me while I was in England I sent her the lyrics to "You're a Big Girl Now" in an e-mail. "I hope you can hear me singing through these tears." I was going to record it, but my 4 track was kind of 3,000 miles away.
