You can't go wrong with the perfect break-up, fuck you song "Positively 4th Street" , another Dylan masterpiece, the last few lines say it all

Yes, I wish that for just one time

You could stand inside my shoes

You'd know what a drag it is

To see you

great call, I'd left that one out. I still remember my dad playing that for me when I was quite young and thinking "boy, this guy must be pretty damn mad at this woman..."

Stars Set Yourself on Fire is another great break-up album.

Songs:

"Dead Flowers" - Rolling Stones

"Will to Love" - Neil Young (and at least 50% of the songs on Chrome Dreams that eventually turned up on other albums)

"All Things Must Pass" - George Harrison

"Ruin My Day" - Jon Brion

"Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye" - Leonard Cohen

"Let It Die" - Feist

"The saddest part of a broken heart

Isn't the ending so much as the start."

Another nice Neil tune that somehow fits is "Winterlong". I have a really mellowed out version of Neil playing it on the piano and a harmonica. It is a completely different song that way.

If things should ever turn out wrong

and all the love we had was gone

it won't be easy on that day

Oh, and what about "I'm So Tired" from the White Album? I think Lennon captures it pretty good in that one.

anyway,

Catharsis is good I think, if done in a way thats not indulgent or silly, but progressive and helpful.

I'm going through a break-up now, and things are just starting to get real turbulent.

On a bright note I managed to compose one of my best mixes in recent memory to comeserate our disunion...

Without going into specifics.........I made a mix of music for someone outside of my married life. Someone I am gravitating to......this mix was made in fit of melancholy yesterday.......she got it before leaving for Seattle today.

Wildflowers--Tom Petty

Jesus Etc. --Wilco cover by Blue Canoe

My Darling--Jay bennett/Ed Burch

Remember the Mountain Bed--Jeff Tweedy

Ashokan Farwell--Fiddle Fever

Hyacinth House-- The Doors

Cars Can't Escape--Wilco

Don't Give Up On Me-- Solomon Burke

Lookin' for Me Somewhere--The Bo Deans

You Don't Miss Your Water--Byrds

Wait Up--Uncle Tupelo

You are my Winding Wheel--Ryan Adams

That's Alright By Me--Gene Clark

Ritual Of Hearts-Maliquidora

Pecan Pie----Golden Smog

Crying--Roy Orbison /k.d. lang

Freway Lullaby-Evangeline

Meditation-Jules Massenet

Please.....no stones....

--Robert.

Damn, you guys are good--no, great--at this. I've been married now over 16 years and all these songs make me want to divorce just to put together the ultimate break-up mix!! (Just kidding dear--she knows I'm AWATT and sometimes checks up on me just to make sure I'm not making a complete fool of myself [she obviously needs to monitor me more closely :P ].)

SPEED OF SOUND - CHRIS BELL

also Master and Everyone - Bonnie "Prince" Billy

you say there are other fish in the sea

and you say that another gathers roses for me

but on this we will agree

you will do what you want/

and I will do what I want

I'm now free a master and everyone

servant of all and servant to none.

Shit this one I forgot but definitely needs an airing:

Words & Music by John Prine..

Feelings are strange

Especially when they come true

And I had a feeling

That you'd be leaving soon

So I tried to rearrange

All my emotions

But it seems the same

No matter what I do

CHORUS

Blue umbrella

Rest upon my shoulder

Hide the pain

While the rain

Makes up my mind

Well,my feet are wet

From thinking this thing over

And it's been so long

Since I felt the warm sunshine

Just give me one good reason

And I promise I won't ask you anymore

Just give me one extra season

So I can figure out the other four

Daytime

Makes me wonder why you left me

Nighttime

Makes me wonder what I said

Next time

Are the words I'd like to plan on

But,last time

Was the only thing you said..

REPEAT CHORUS

I think Prine could have a whole thread to himself, esp. when it comes to this area

As far as punk rock break-up songs go, it's hard to beat these 3 songs by Jawbreaker, all from the 24 Hour Revenge Therapy album:

"Do You Still Hate Me?"

"Jinx Removing" (a flat-out heart-breaking tune)

"In Sadding Around"

Don't tell me I'm the only Jawbreaker fan here!!!

I know the lyrics are ridiculously naive and simplistic, but there's something about Beatnik Filmstars' "Tearing Apart My World" that always tugged at my heart-strings.

3 pages and no mentions of the ultimate breakup masterpiece, The Cure-"Disintegration"

Also:

Led Zep-Tangerine

Moody Blues-almost all of their stuff

The Church-Under the Milky Way

Jackson Browne's "Hold On Hold Out" album

Bob Mould-Workbook
