u2roolz
Hello Everyone, I just got a call from my best friend's little brother who attended the show tonight. He said it was a very emotional show and somber. A different vibe than what he's seen before. We send out our prayers to Jeff and his family. He said the set was very similar to Lollapalooza except Let's Fight was dropped.Opened with A Shot In The ArmImpossible Germany-the rest of the set is out of order-I Am Trying To Break Your HeartThe Late GreatsVia ChicagoWar On WarJesus, Etc.Heavy Metal DrummerWalken I'm The Man Who Loves YouHummingbird - closed the main set In A Future Age - opened the 1st encoreMonday - closed the 1st encore What Light - closed the 2nd encore (wasn't too sure if this was the only song of 2nd encore) What else was played :One By OneAt Least That's What You SaidForget The FlowersAirline To HeavenCompany In My BackTheologians And a brand new song which Jeff announced was brand new. Apparently it's a real rocker. Thanks, Kristofor Edited October 5, 2006 by u2roolz
mylifeisought
That list is missing Handshake Drugs. I just got about an hour ago (2 and a half hour drive), and i'm exhausted, and will give a full account tomorrow. Suffice to say that Jeff starting to cry during "At Least That's What You Said" was AMAZINGLY intense. The whole band seemed to take their grief out on their intruments, leading to ferocious and vicious versions of several songs. Very intense night, the crowd sent Jeff all of our love, and he seemed touched. Fucking AWESOME show.

Mr. Heartbreak
Interesting reviews. Anyone know the reason why things were so different?
sharkycharming
Interesting reviews. Anyone know the reason why things were so different? Jeff's mother died last Friday.
SASQUATCH
They played great, especially Niles & Kotche, but the mix was horrible. Actually it was great except for two things........ Tweedy's vocals were pretty distorted for awhile. They finally fixed it after "Company In My Back". Pat Sansone's keyboard was too LOUD! Pat Sansone's keyboard was too LOUD! Pat Sansone's keyboard was too LOUD! and it kept getting louder. They never fixed this at all. When the band played quietly, it was great. When they rocked out Sansone's keyboard & Tweedy's vocals overpowered everything else. Nels seemed far more comfortable tonight playing the old stuff, and his solo on Via Chicago was amazing........ Further weirdness:They started "Walkin'" (GREAT song!) and 1/2 through it, Tweedy stops the band, and tells the crowd that even though it was the tour opener they can play it better than that, so they start from the top. Even further weirdness/awkwardness:Tweedy was crying throughout the show, not continously, but in intervals. Right before "Heavy Metal Drummer" he told us his Mom died a few days ago, and he didn't want to be there (quite understandable), but thanked us for being there & said that she would have wanted him to play.He apologized for crying, and said something to the effect of that "now that I've made you sad, let's shake our booties!".They busted into Heavy Metal Drummer with tons of energy. Weird juxtaposition of emotions in a 30 second time frame. I talked to all of them except Jeff after the show. He walked past us, but everyone left him alone and he left immediately. I had met everyone in the band before except Glenn Kotche, so I was pleased to meet him last night, nice guy. I talked guitar stuff with Nels for maybe 20 minutes. kamera26
it will be awhile before Jeff plays "Please Tell My Brother" or maybe it will be therapeutic to play it.

SASQUATCH
Please tell more on new song. Pretty standard rocker. I was much more taken with "Impossible Germany" & "Walkin'", my first time hearing these two songs.........
shoesgetcold
Jeff was amazing last night. He went 22 songs with a heavy heart and an understandable desire to be elsewhere. He said in typical Tweedy fashion that his mom would have been so mad at him if he had not been there last night. Well he made her proud witih an extremely emotional performance. Hopefully it provided a release for him. He dedicated the 2nd encore "What Light" to his aunt Judy, another nice family moment.
mountain bed
Please tell more on new song.I thought it kicked ass & there were a number of times where Jeff just cut loose with SCREAMS (ala beginning of KT,etc.).Those who like teh Rockin' Wilco will love this one! I hope this makes the cut when the record comes out.
Preferred B
Did Glenn by any chance take a drum solo in the new song?
watchtower41
It looks like we are in store for a great little Fall tour.... Surprise no Spiders?? Maybe a break?
LouieB
WOW...that sounds amazing. It was, but very very sad and more than a bit upsetting. At a time like this you realize how many Wilco songs deal with memory, mortality and one's relationship with an ever changing and painful world. It was actually a big relief when Jeff finally talked, because I don't think alot of the audience was aware of what was going on (particularly the women a couple seats from me who kept yelling "Casino Queen".) The band was actually on fire, particularly Nels, who nailed every solo and every rave like it was his last show. I hope things go well for the rest of this leg of the tour, but it was obvious that it was difficult for Jeff to be onstage and again a relief when he finally said so. Please tell more on new song.It has a Glenn Kotche drum solo in it... As for the rest of this show, it was great to hang out with Scott and his family and friends prior to and during and after the show. There were a number of people I met and hung with that it was their first show. Despite the sadness of the evening, everyone played their hearts out and made it a great evening anyway. The Elliott Hall of Music is a beautiful venue that was less than half full in total. I have not been to a show that was not sold out in a very long time, but west and Layfayette are not big towns and seemed to be drawing mostly from Purdue. I could have done with out the opening act, but that happens often. They were young and earnest and shoe gazing and too loud. LouieB Did Glenn by any chance take a drum solo in the new song?Yes....but I guess I said that already. LouieB
Edie
Thanks Louie for your review. Since the news broke about Jeff's mom, I have also been very cognizant of their content -- but even before this have often though of my brother who passed away just over 3 years ago. I just hope that Jeff can find as much solace in them as we all do. I am looking forward to the shows mid-month.
Preferred B
It has a Glenn Kotche drum solo in it... Thanks Lou. I've been waiting for this one. Who knows if it'll stick around, I suppose. Thanks for the reviews. It sounds like a tough show to have attended in some ways, but they made it work. Looking forward to reading future reports (and eventually making my own). magazine called sunset
I thought the show was amazing. Very different from any show I've been to since the Otto's shows after Jeff got out of rehab. But it was that same kind of nervous, edgy vibe last night. I took my brother to his first show, and I know that he will remember that one always. I couldn't help but think throughout the entire thing how difficult it must have been to go through with playing the show. But in typical Jeff fashion, he bared his soul to the audience...hopefully it was theraputic. I didn't see any tapers there...did anyone else?

Really enjoyed meeting Louie and Beth, you two are some really good people.NIce meeting you too....it was nice to extend the VC connections into Indiana. I kept transversing Indiana this week, but stopping for the few hours I did, were really enjoyable. Hope something else occurs in Laffy so I can come down again. mountain bed
I truly did not expect "In a Future Age".One of the highlights for me (1st time I've caught it live).A quick glance at WilcoBase shows less than 2 dozen performances by the whole band.
