kruekutt
My first Wilco show -- and the best concert I've seen in at least four years. They came out ready to burn tonight -- riveting from the word go. Tweedy didn't speak until after Theologians. When he said hi, it was almost as if he wanted to talk about his mom's passing. But somebody up front yelled something, and he seemed to make a quick decision to go elsewhere. The rest of the night's announcements generally played off some of the shouters near the stage. augurus
Walken, not Walkin'. But no one cares. There's a Gospel Improv before Kingpin. I hope we have a taper. The song that ends the first encore is the new song with that Glenn Kotche drum solo. A lot of mentions of the words 'rock', 'carry', and 'honey' are used. Oh, 36 "nothing"s counted. Poor Places is missing the siren-esque sampling in the beginning. She's A Jar! Edited October 7, 2006 by augurus
mountain bed
Looks like a nice setlist there! I'm a sucker for Poor Places>Reservations.
paauwe
wow, that was amazing. i've never heard nor even heard of "impossible germany" but that and "reservations" take the cake as the highlights of the show for me.
scheruvu
That was a really amazing show! Some of the live staples like Via Chicago, I'm Always in Love, Spiders, California Stars and such were missing, but I didn't even notice that till after the show. There was understandably a lot of emotion in Jeff's voice that he was holding back the first half or so of the main set, and the entire show it seemed like he was using the music as a form of catharsis. Some of the highlights of the show for me were Impossible Germany, ALTWYS, full band ITTTIG, Poor Places with a solo acoustic intro and first verse (loved it!), and the rocking new song. I really hope someone taped this show. Jeff didn't say much until he apologized for not being too talkative, and when someone asked "What's up?", he said "Nothing much, everything's cool". After ITTTIG and before Kingpin he went into a long rant about how we should sing along more, and how it was good to get your demons out, saying that we'd regret it in the morning if we didn't sing in unison with our fellow men. He was even pointing to a gentleman in the front row who remained seated the entire show, and the surprising thing is, in spite of all of this, he continued to be seated. The MSU auditorium was a bigger venue than I'd imagined, almost like a small arena. The crowd was great though, lots of singing along and such.
thisyearsgirl
you know, i was in the second row and feel really bad for the guy that jeff was razzing just in front and to the right of me. jeff didn't know it, but the guy was really sick and felt like crap, so he just sat through the show. i don't think lack of interest had anything to do with it. regardless, sonically, the best wilco show i've ever seen. (i've been to quite a few, too) the acoustics were great, and the balance of sound was nearly perfect...mikael's parts were very audible and lovely, which is a great thing to hear from an instrument often muddled in the mix. the band is downright ferocious right now, jeff included. the only thing that topped the great sound, stellar song variety (reservations AND poor places AND she's a jar), and the great vibe from the crowd (not a lot of talkers, thank god!) was that i was surrounded by many of my wilco concert partners in crime. it was a blast being there and sharing it all with them again after such a long time between meetings...you lovely people know who you are and that i love you all very much. lastly, nice to meet some more VCer's. always such great people! RKiller
it was a great show. Unfortunately it was my first Wilco and was in row 1 so it will be hard to top! Here are a few clips from East Lansing
dazzler
Great show last night. The missus and I had a wonderful time. We feel lighthearted and free this morning thanks to Wilco and much singing in unison with our fellow man. And much by Missus Dazzler. The sound was incredible. Even The Early Day Miners sounded good (as good as noisy shoe gazers can sound (I mean do you really need 4-5 guitars for each song). Our first show was London and the sound can not even be compared. The Poor Places/ Reservations was the highlight for me along with Reverend Tweedy's sermon on the stage (I too used to be just like you, arms folded, hands on my chin,"That was an interesting rendition of that number.", checking out the guitars). I counted three tapers by the way. I noticed the Impossible Germany solo now features Jeff and Pat playing a simultaneous riff while Nels jams out. And I wrote the new song down as Lets Not Get Carried Away. Not to harp on it, but the sound was incredible. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I get tickets for Chicago for my b-day. Kalle
That has to be one of my favourite setlists they've played all year. Too bad I couldn't to this show, it's so close to the Sault too!

Second Encore:Heavy Metal DrummerMisunderstood This making me very excited for Tall Stacks . I hope they bust Poor Places/Reservations out to close the set tonight. And Is That The Thanks I Get? is actually an orginial, Jeff wrote it for Solomon Burke, but he didn't get to him in time for the recording of his last record. So now it's a Wilco song. --Mike
groovingdan
I will harp on it. The sound was amazing. Best sound for any Wilco show that I've ever been to. The highlight for me was just after Is That The Thanks I Get and before Kingpin. He started "preaching" about singing together and getting our demons out and the band started playing old-time revival music accenting when appropriate. The newbs that I brought were blown away. Nice to meet other VCers too there.

Scalzunfield
Two shows in a row I believe If I remember some of the set lists from the tour before this, it wasn't there every show either. I, for one, am thankful at getting to potentially hear two (or even three) new songs in its place. Not that I don't love Spiders, but...a change is really nice. terwilligher
this is the first time I've seen them play She'sAJar and AirlineToHeaven out of the four times I've seen them - when he put the harmonica on for "Jar" I was really hoping it was SunkenTreasure, but alas the third time I've bought my tickets through the WilcoWorld portal, and these were definitely the best - 8th Row (HH) right down the middle. my favorite show out of Ann Arbor (10/04) Kalamazoo (2/05) Meadowbrook (6/05) and MSU (10/06) is still Kalamazoo - RememberTheMountainBed and ShouldaBeenInLove can't be beat as a one-two rarities combination, man. the energy was weird - it was odd to me that Jeff didn't talk for so long, but it seemed like when he warmed up he talked a lot but still seemed kinda detached from the crowd.and the Early Day Miners - I really enjoyed their sound, but the songs all sounded the same, and they were way too heavy on instrumentals that seemed to be the same four chords (yeah, I complain about that but then I loved watching Wilco jam-band for two hours - go fig.) I really enjoy the songs where Nels, Jeff, John, and Pat are all guitaring across the front of the stage, with John and Pat sharing a microphone to sing the harmonies. it just feels like a wall of sound, and so very very energizing. paauwe
i have a confession/statement/question. well, when i first got AGIB and after listening to through several times. i did not like spiders. and up until this day i still don't dig spiders all too much. but i remember at the concert, there was a song i didn't know and they mentioned Michigan in it a lot. So i went through the setlist up above and tried to find the song. no luck. then just a few minutes ago, spiders popped up on iTunes, i have it on shuffle. so i listened to it, and michigan is mentioned several times. So did they play spiders and were all completely and utterly insane, or is there another song that mentions MI and if so which one is it. i went through the songs i didn't know and the only ones i could find anywhere were walken, and "Wreck (or is it Rock) Myself (new song?)" . is it either of them. Second Encore:Heavy Metal DrummerMisunderstood i grabbed a setlist after the show...ashes was supposed to be played instead of the new song (glenn's solo one), and also the show was supposed to end with far far away. though far far away is one of my favorite songs and would have been AWESOME to hear, i dont think the atmosphere was right...we were all rockin way too hard at that point for that one i have a confession/statement/question. well, when i first got AGIB and after listening to through several times. i did not like spiders. and up until this day i still don't dig spiders all too much. but i remember at the concert, there was a song i didn't know and they mentioned Michigan in it a lot.
