muzzleofpeas
This song was played to finish the first encore last night in E. Lansing. It was unreal, really rockin. If anyone has an mp3, this is the place to put it.
DAngerer09
I have a video of part of this song that I took during the Cincinnati show. Just not sure how I would get it posted on here. It is an amazing and rocking song- Jeff commented that "We are working on a new album and this song is about what I hate about rock and roll...and also what I love about it." And I think it may be called "Rock Myself" rather than "Wreck Myself" Edited October 8, 2006 by DAngerer09

tongue-tied
and I'm a Wheel rocks. it must be awesome
mpolak21
and I'm a Wheel rocks. it must be awesome Based on one listen I think it is, hopefully the shows will circulate soon and people can judge for themselves. It rocks a little harder then I'm a Wheel, the lyrics are better and Tweedy's vocal performance was pretty unbeatable last night. --Mike
wheelco
Well it's better then I'm a Wheel. --MikeI'm a Wheel is in my bottom half of Wilco songs, really, but this new one is lower, except for maybe the lyrics. However, I'm more of a fan of music than lyrics, given that this is rock we're talking about I just didn't like it at all, no big deal This band is so much better at subtlety and melody than most out there, but this type of tune throws it out the window A shame, I really had thought Hell is Chrome/Muzzle of Bees/Theologians were the harbingers of the musical sophistication these guys were going to keep giving I'll still buy their CDs and go to shows in any event . . . Guest Speed Racer
I had that same problem, but with the Wilco Book. After hearing/loving AGIB and then the amazing stuff they were doing with the Wilco Book, I thought that the band would be steering more toward the subtlety/sparsity aesthetic on future records, and I've been rather bummed to find that this is not the case at all. My spirits were lifted with the release of BAITUSA - I love the guitar work and the rock vibe, but it also maintains a certain subtlety that I just can't get enough of. Of the new Wilco, though, I would have to say the only pieces I can stomach are Walken (which I LOVE) and the solo Is That the Thanks I Get? Given the description of Rock Myself, I'm rather optimistic, but I'm remaining somewhat pessimistic about the new album... Are they writing bad songs? Well, not exactly...Are they writing songs I like? Nope, not for the most part.

I've been going through a lot of the 2002/2003 era shows for the AGIB complation I am working on and Muzzle of Bees and Theologians were a little rough, Theologians much more so, when they were played in their early incarnations. I think most of the songs got a lot better when they were completed for the album. So I wouldn't quite write the new stuff off yet. I'm a Wheel is probably my least favorite song on A Ghost is Born, but that's comparable to being my least favorite relative. It's kind of stupid, but I still love it. --Mike

jethro
This band is so much better at subtlety and melody than most out there, but this type of tune throws it out the window.Expectations... rising. Wilco has been taking subtlety to the point of Jeff having to badger the audience into standing and they have to bust out 10 year old songs for their encores. You can't think he enjoys that sort of thing? Some of my favorite songs are Jeff's more ballady moments but I don't want to hear a concert full of them. Some jerk once said something like: There's darkness in this lifeBut the brighter side we also may view There's room for both types of music, and having that dynamic makes both have more impact than either would alone. I don't expect that this one song (that I haven't heard, watch it be like Late Greats which got talked up as this amazing rocker only to spread bitter tears of disappointment, or maybe it was just indifference, once it got out) will usher in a bunch of other new ones that get people jumping around and having fun at Wilco concerts, but God, if only it would. Yeah I understand your concerns, the new song doesn't exactly have any subtlety it's like Casino Queen, the fast version, on steroids. Walken has some pretty exciting moments musically, but the other songs don't quite have the subtle brilliance of Ghost, the first Loose Fur record and BAITUSA. I'm kind of hoping the studio process will bring that out in some of the songs. Though a big worry of mine is that as great as this new six piece band is live in the studio it might become a situation where there are too many cooks, now Ghost was essentially recorded as a six piece (with O'Rourke), but they do seem to be moving closer and closer to bombastic rock songs. Which after the brilliance of Muzzle of Bees, Wishful Thinking, Hummingbird and Hell is Chrome might take a little getting used to. --Mike

Guest Speed Racer
But that's just it - Hey Chicken is pretty bombastic, and the lyrics aren't all that introspective, and yet it works. Nay, it ROCKS. To me, the dynamic of Loose Fur captures something that the current dynamic of Wilco is missing: there's a reason people say 'less is more,' and not 'more is less.' This is the largest line-up that Wilco has ever recorded as, and I wholeheartedly agree that there might be a few too many cooks up in that kitchen.

The cowbell jam on track 7 is cock, but after the 15 minute mark it just starts to seem kind of wanky. And Pitchfork rated teh time machine itself a 2.8 because it is an exact replica of the space-shippy new look of Ryan Adams' website, complete with cheesy rap song played on a continuous loop as you hurtle through the space-time continuum.
