kathyp
Has anyone mentioned Lou Reed's "The Bed" or "The Kids"? Actually the entire Berlin album really, but those two songs in particular. Oh lord yes. Berlin is harrowing (to borrow a tired old rock critic cliche). I like "The Bed" with Cat Power's "Colors and the Kids" following it -- mixtape-wise. dixiecupdrinker
Forgive me if these have already been said, but they are both pretty sad (at least to me). "If You Could Read My Mind" by Gordon Lightfoot. Have you heard Johnny Cash sing it? Fucking heart wrenching. "I'm A Long Way From Home" by Hank Cochran. Waylon Jennings sings it on the 1966 soundtrack album, "Nashvile Rebel" and Shooter Jennings does it on the "Walk the Line" soundtrack. Both get me every time. This probably doesn't REALLY count as a sad song, but it always makes me sad when I hear it, but "Promising" by Mr. Tweedy on the Chelsea Walls soundtrack. dcd

DrNo
I mentioned this before--like last October or something--but I thought I'd post the lyrics this time.Sure, break-ups are sad, but Rennie Sparks upped the ante by working in extinction, too. The Handsome Family "Passenger Pigeons" Ever since you moved out I've been living in the park. I'd rather talk to the wind than an empty apartment. I wish I could forget how a billion birds flew in my hollow dying heart the first time I touched your arm. Once there were a billion Passenger Pigeons. So many flew by they darkened the sky. But they were clubbed and shot, netted, gassed and burned, until there was nothing left but miles of empty nests. I can't believe how easily a billion birds can disappear. The park is empty now. It's so cold out and all the paddle boats are covered up with snow. Once again it's dark. The electric lights snap on, but I'm still here drinking frozen beer and throwing potato chips into the white snow drifts just in case a bird decides to fly through here tonight. I can't believe how easily a billion birds can disappear.

keylime
Peer Pressure by Jon Brion YES. Elephant Parade, although very short, physically hurts me when I listen to it, as do a lot of the Jon Brion songs on the Eternal Sunshine soundtrack. So beautiful and so sad.
