Sir Stewart
As far as I know, the accent is spot-on anyway, so it wasn't distracting.
caliber66
As far as I know, the accent is spot-on anyway, so it wasn't distracting. That was not the impression I got from the preview, but that could certainly have been colored by my lack of regard for his acting abilities. Not having seen more of the movie than the television previews, I will withhold further comment.
JUDE
Brian Henneman's Festus, MO accent > Leonard Dicaprio's South African accent.
Sir Stewart
I watched Spike Lee's The 25th Hour over the weekend. What a ride. I had put it off for a long time, because even though I'd heard good things from the right people about it, it just looked....not that good. But it was much different than I expected. Great turns by Ed Norton and Rosario Dawson (who'd never really inpressed me before). Spike knows how to tell a story.
oatmealblizzard
I bought Children of Men on DVD over the weekend after everyone has raved about it, but not got round to watching it... waiting for an uninterrupted evening!Children of Men is out on DVD there? Huh. I watched Spike Lee's The 25th Hour over the weekend. What a ride. Beltmann
I can't get past the ridiculous South African accent Leo is trying to pull off in the preview. Didn't find it distracting at all?I found it distracting for about 15 minutes, but only because I know that's not DiCaprio's real voice. But once I became absorbed in the story and in his performance, I didn't really notice anymore. You really find DiCaprio lacking as an actor? I know he's got the whole pin-up image problem and the Titanic backlash problem, but the dude's got chops and is only getting better. When separated from hype, his work speaks for itself. When separated from hype, his work speaks for itself.I don't like a lot of what he's done. He comes off as smug to me, for whatever reason. Things I liked Leo's performance in:What's Eating Gilbert GrapeThe Quick and the Dead Things I was indifferent to Leo's performance in:The Basketball DiariesTotal EclipseThe Man in the Iron Mask Things I did not like Leo's performance in:TitanicRomeo + JulietThe Beach Things I hated Leo's performance in:Gangs of New York I have not seen any of his most recent performances, though, which I hear are pretty good. jahilia
Things I hated Leo's performance in:Gangs of New York I thought he was great in that - it was actually that film, This Boy's Life and The Basketball Diaries that caused me to overlook his Titanic teenage girl pinup reputation. What was it about his performance that you didn't like? Of course, it is my favorite Scorsese film, so I may be predjudiced.
Sir Stewart
I thought he was pretty awful and in over his head in Gangs of New York, but his performance was pretty fantastic and masterful in The Aviator.
caliber66
What was it about his performance that you didn't like? The totality of it. The accent, the execution. Just didn't like his performance at all. I thought the movie was pretty good, but I hated Leo in it.
kathyp
The Aristocrats. The Aristocrats is a joke comedians like to tell among themselves because it allows them to ad lib the filthiest set-up line they can possibly think of. (I'd never heard it before I saw the documentary). The joke goes something like: a guy walks into an (agent's; booker's) office and says, "I have the greatest act in the world (scatology, beastiality, grandma...). The agent says, "What's the name of the act?" "The Aristocrats." Yeah, it's not funny when I tell it. The movie was good though. A little long for what it is.

KevinG
Finished watching: Last night - not a bad first season at all. Think it really found it's feet towards the end and even encountered a bad guy that reminded me of The Master a little bit... though the ending of the season was a bit corny, it was thoroughly watchable. Just finished watching this as well. I thought it was the best TV show in recent memory. Though could have done without the "kiss"
jahilia
later: I really enjoyed this. I thought it was really clever to have the hard-boiled detective type dialogue and the film noir style and set the whole thing around high school kids. I've started season one of The Wire, everyone seems to love it, but I haven't been impressed so far. I thought the first three episodes were pretty good, but the two I've seen since then didn't seem on par with those. I guess they just haven't developed the characters enough for me to care what happens to them.
Welsh Rich
later: That is good - once I got my head around the kids talking and acting like some film noir characters I enjoyed it a lot more! Just finished watching this as well. I thought it was the best TV show in recent memory. Though could have done without the "kiss" I thought that was ok, I've seen a lot more gratuitous use of sex in that series though! It was ok, just hoping they settle down the stories in the next season... not long till Doctor Who too!

It was ok, just hoping they settle down the stories in the next season... not long till Doctor Who too! I actaully like Torchwood better then Doctor Who. The stories while not as fun, are really gritty and better written then most Who episodes. Also the characters have more depth. I too cannot wait for series 3, but The Runaway Bride kinda left me worried. Let's hope Martha is better then and less annoying then Rose.
kathyp
I rented The Night Listener today; finally out on DVD. Haven't watched it yet, but I loved the book (which usually means the movie will suck donkey balls in hell). There's a Sally Mann documentary on (I think) Cinemax tonight. There are more than a few photogs here, in case some of you guys are fans of her work. Watched this last night and it scared the hell out of me. I almost picked this up.
