Short Q&A with Jeff on EW.com

Recommended Posts

Jesus, are they ever going to give it a rest with the rehab thing? Talk about your laaa-zzzy reporting. No journalistic standards there, I'm afraid.

There are newer fans that are crying fowl,

And even worse copy editing standards.

Fights his prescription drug addiction to record Sky Blue Sky? Lame. Three years late, EW.

And two edits:

1) My dad signed a contract with me to quit smoking when I was five. I'm 23 and my dad still smokes. I should trade him in for Tweedles.

2) I don't get how you would see the new songs as being pessimistic...

90% of the articles written about Wilco STILL start out with the YHF backstory, so I think the answer is no.

Really cool picture though, that is my new favorite guitar of Jeff's.

See here for more pictures, including that one.

And props once again to chaslor, who took all those fantastic shots. :worship

Did I read correctly that you were once mistaken for an usher at the Grammys by P. Diddy?

You did read that correctly, yeah. The first time Wilco was nominated for a Grammy it was for Best Contemporary Folk Album for the Mermaid Avenue album [Wilco's 1998 collaboration with Billy Bragg]. So I was standing outside the bathrooms waiting for my wife and some other guys in the band. And as they went into the bathroom everybody kind of unburdened themselves of their programs and their coats and jackets and stuff, so I'm standing there holding a big stack of programs. And Puffy and his entourage came up to me and took one of my programs. Like I was standing there offering them to people! I guess I just looked like a page. I didn't look like I belonged there, is the main point of the story. I might have been beaten with a diamond-encrusted cane, but things didn't go that way. So I feel lucky.

Ok guys, I'm a copy editor (not for EW).

Let's keep a few things in mind:

1. We're not Entertainment Weekly's audience. This is written for people who need some background. The rehab stint was news (it made the CNN crawl). YHF was news. (I would, however, like to see more articles start out with the fact that AGIB was a Grammy winner).

2. I only skimmed the article, but I don't see any grammatical or other copy editing errors. I'm not sure, exactly, how that article goes against any journalistic values.

3. Jeff tends to repeat himself. Yes, they may have asked the same questions (but one can assume that most EW's readers don't read Paste and Harp and Uncut ...), but he answered them the same. If he's sick of the rehab question he can say "I think everyone has heard enough about that - new question." That question seems to have some relevance to the new album since the songs are more direct.

I hope I spelled everything correctly here, or I'm about to get slammed.

Thanks,

Laura

Perhaps a point of interest: The first two paragraphs of this piece were published in this week's newsstand version of EW, and the "fowl" error had been corrected.

Fowl - chickens maybe?

Can't believe I didn't see that.

There is a short blurb/interview with Jeff Tweedy in the current issue of EW, the one with the Sopranos

on the cover. In keeping with the theme of the cover, Jeff uses 2 forms of the f-word in the interview.

You mean this one?

Tweedy isn't the only one that repeats himself. This is actually pretty common. I remember reading some of the same Tom Waits stories in multiple places over the years. Same thing goes for movie stars doing interviews for movies. They sit in a room all day and answer the same questions from multiple interviewers with the same answers. Really, if anything, you can blame the interviewers for not asking better questions. But yes, this is pretty standard. At least he's not Farrar, who is constantly getting compared to Tweedy in EVERY article about him.
