mchchef1
It has been proven; effective mixed tapes for chicks must contain "Wish you Were Here" We're just two lost souls livinng in a blah,blah,blah........
cooperissup3r
you never come on too strong.. im the man who loves you opener? no... more subtle.. outtamind outta site turns it up too much u dont wanna promise more than u can deliver.. then you couol it off for 5 songs, doesnt work... u need to keep hittin em but keep coolin em too you never come on too strong? what? a song like "I'm the Man Who Loves You" is meant to be a 'come on too strong' song. same with say Break Your Heart, or Reservations. the whole point of love is to come on too strong. if you aren't giving it your all, then you're giving it nothign. Reflectedinthemoon
no one's talked about High Fidelity yet? i'm surprised... "The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don't wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules." start with that, if you ask me. ITMWLY would be good as an opener in my opinion.
druber
"Somehow I want to say it all in the perfect Wilco mix tape." Wilco's great at saying Wilco. Wilco's not so great at speaking for you. I've dubbed my share of mix tapes, I'd like to think. Yeah I remember putting the one song on that really said how I felt, more eloquently and emotionally than I could have said it. And I remember waiting, hoping she'd pick up on it. If I'd been in the same shoes, would I? Probably not. Even if I'd noticed those specific lines, I wouldn't have put much faith in them. It's somebody else's song. She should believe it because I came out and said it. Whatever eloquence you can muster will be enough. That said, under no circumstances would I lead with "I'm The Man Who Loves You" if you haven't already confessed it. If you want her to dig Wilco, fill the tape with the songs that move you. If you want to say something to her, just tell her.
tjr
"Someday Some Morning Sometime"... and "New Madrid" might work well...
misslaura
I guess nobody here finds "Someday Soon" as moving as I do? I am a girl though, so trust me - put that one on. It's sweet and it's a little more newby friendly since it's upbeat and not as cryptic as some of the other amazingly heartwrenching tracks people are listing.
evil horn
I made this one today for the new girl. the idea was a mix of sending emotional message and songs that paint a broad picture of the band. I need to break her in for northampton and hammerstein. Noodle
I'd include a solo Tweedy w/ Kotche version of 'War on War', if only because the final 40 seconds or so are nothing less than proof positive that Glenn is the greatest drummer working today in the drum-hitting industry, even if he kisses his guns after warming up. I like the one from San Diego, 2/11/2006. - Noodle, completing his annual "one post a year" quota.
HighFives
I made lots of mixes for this girl I used to date. I wish I still had the tracklistings.
MattZ
for this girl I used to date I still can't listen to some songs that I have put on mix tapes for old girlfriends. Be careful.
coast to coast
Less Than You Think, but with just the drone looping on and on forever instead of dying out..... No really, if you wanna play her stuff you know she's gonna hear at the concert that'd help her get into the concert. She can become familiar with the bac catalogue once she's fallen in love with them, but put stuff on she'll hear at the concert, so she can enjoy it with a bit of familiarity. Thats my advice. Do the "uLTIMATE mIX tAPE eVA!" at later date.

jimtweedy1977
ooh, mixtapes are fun. granted, I think it should just be what songs you feel expresses what speaks to your heart. I know it sounds like you're making it about you, but showing someone that you have original thoughts and feelings can go a long way. The best way to let someone know you're interested in them (friendship or otherwise) is to share something about you. I've learned that from a good friend of mine. I've made her a mix cd as well. I love the challenge of coming up with a mixtape, so here goes my suggested mix (different from the one I made my friend). In the end, it's your call buddy. Pecan_Pie
Here's one that I made up last night to introduce one of my friends to the band. I hope she (and you all) likes it.. 1. Can't Stand It2. I'm the Man Who Loves You9. Someday Soon10. Sunken Treasure (IATTBYH version)11. Hummingbird12. Theologians13. New Madrid14. One By One15. War on War16. On and On and On I feel like that's listener friendly, diverse, and has a good flow. Also, ITMWLY has to be put in the middle. It's a great middle-of-the-mix pick me up track, and it would be lame to open the mix with such a lyrically direct track. Now I'm gonna go listen to that mix!
pdiddy
Ok, so months later and I'm almost ready to give this mix to her. A few updates - we went to the Red Bank show and I figured out some of the songs she likes. Two, she does actually want a CD now, so it's scaled back to one 75-minute 'side'. Three, she is now my girlfriend. Still, she leaves for Arizona next week and I want to give her the CD before she leaves. So the mix I ultimately decided to make isn't a start-to-finish lovefest, but I think is a nice balance.
