ACUFF ROSE!

There were some techincal issues witht he mic and guitar so Jeff played Acuff Rose Solo with no amp. He mentioned how everyone in Jersey knows what exit they lived off and how Bon Jovi owned the theater. The show was 2 hours and 10 min!

Crowd was enthusiastic and I got to meet the whole band to boot where they signed Sky Blue Sky for me!

Yay! :dancing

Was my first time seeing Nels play and all I can say is the guy is God. I was third row aisle seat. Might be the greatest night of my life. I had a silly grin on my face the whole night, I never wanted it too end. Plus I saw three tapers when I was leaving, I have my fingers crossed they will pop up one day.

Ashes & Spiders were supposed to be the first encore. But b/c of the glitch (bad guitar cable immediately followed by Jeff's mike going out), they played straight through due to curfew. Jeff even mentioned it. Great venue, it was nice from 7th row center. Saw Springsteen here a long time ago. Totally different feel last night from MPP. They took advantage of the intimacy to play more from the new one. No Outta Site last night. :ohwell A nice combo of shows. REALLY looking forward to Warsaw. I need a pierogie (sp?). Well, ok, not really. :blush

Acuff was great, but people, can we PLEASE get some quiet when we get something that cool. LOTS of people screaming, shouting stuff...why do people feel the need to do that?

BTW, plenty of tix outside last night. Not many really good seats, but at least there were seats

well, I saw the owl

Ok, that needs an explanation. I believe the original post was because the owl at MPP actually got mentioned & moved to a prominent viewing place on stage and was in general a comedic moment. Not so last night.

That's all. :beer

We got Theologians in Davenport. But if you mean Ashes and Theologians together, then yes.

I must have missed seeing it on the Davenport setlist, alot of the AGIB songs have been played alot less this tour because of all the new songs and Ashes gets rare play these days.

Having Wilco come to my town was fantastic. Surprisingly my buddies were able to get three tickets to the show outside for face value. I got to Red Bank at around 2 so I could spend the day/see any members walking around. I managed to see Nels and Mike in different places; Mike spent a good half and hour in Jack's Music talking to one of the workers (whose band's t-shirt Mike wore on Letterman). It didn't really hit me about the show until I got to Count Basie. The crowd, for the most part, was pretty lame. There were a lot of sitters/talkers in my section but nonetheless the show was fantastic. They opened with my two favorites off of SBS and included a lot of Ghost and Foxtrot. My only problem was "Shake it Off," which I think is definatly a weaker song than most. The technical difficulties made for a really great Acuff-Rose. The energy from the bad during Spiders was also astonishing; I was having a blast. Apparently Jeff Tweedy made a sprint for the bus after the show because by the time I got there he was already inside. While he was in there I got to see Glenna dn have him sign the same ticket he signed last year; Nels and Mike also stopped by to say hello and they remember me from earlier in the day. Eventually though, Jeff made his way out and made my night. I didn't get to meet him in Sayerville last year so it was especially awesome; he was extremely nice and posed for pictures with us four fans who were waiting. I can't wait for the Hammerstein show.

I saw the Owl too! It was right near Glenn's drum set. They made no mention of it as they had the night prior at Merriweather when Jeff said to send all things macrame to Wilco. All I remember about macrame in my house growing up in the 70's was that those dang plant holders would always get wet whenever I watered the plants and they were always too freakin scratchy. :dancing

My friend Kate and I were in the front row and heard that speaker POP when it blew. It was LOUD!

Thanks Jeff for the amazing solo...

I wish more WILCO fans would let loose and dance :dancing

One Set:

Encore 1:

Walken, I'm the Man Who Loves You, Hummingbird, Ashes of American Flags, Spiders (Kidsmoke)

Encore 2:

California Stars, Heavy Metal Drummer, Late Greats, I'm Always In Love, I'm a Wheel

Notes:

* false start; Nels wasn't ready

** mic problems after Hate It Here; everyone left the stage, and Jeff came back with an acoustic and played Acuff Rose unmic'd from the lip of the stage

I wanted to say that everything about last night was just about perfect. Even sitting in the next-to last row in the Count Basie Theatre could dampen our enjoyment of last night's show (it actually sounded just about perfect back there; Nels and Glenn could have been a little louder, but Jeff's lyrics and acoustic were crystal clear). We took the ferry from Pier 11 with my old friend Amy to Red Bank, where she lives; we ate a nice dinner at this pizza place in "downtown," and Laura and I made it to our seats just as the lights went down.

The Count Basie Theatre is a nice old theater that has underwent a bit of renovation. It was pretty basic, with seats on the floor and the balcony. Just two levels, and you get to your balcony seats from the bottom. Halfway through the show, Laura and I turned to each other and agreed that the crowd was wonderfully enthusiastic. Laura described the feeling as being in a B'roo tent. It had that sort of energy. And the old walls of the theater cast a great, warm sound throughout the room.

The performance was great. Banter was limited but well timed, as Jeff is known for. Nels is incredibly entertaining to watch, kicking his short-pants and over-sized shoes up in the air, switching from electric to lap steel. I hung on just about every one of his solos. Stirratt and Kotche are quite good at rhythm, and the two keyboardists worked well together. (What are their names? Is one Pat Sansone?) The one on the right would alternate between keys and guitar, and when he joined the other guitarists, he made a point of vamping it up with the best of them.

One of the first highlights the heated guitars at the end of Handshake Drugs; a nice little build. I called the Impossible Germany out of Shot In the Arm; my favorite song on Sky Blue Sky, Germany was great. Nels seemed to start the solo a bit early and just rocked it through while Jeff and the other guitarist kept repeating the riff. Jesus etc. is one of my favorite songs ever -- I sang along, at the request of Jeff, with my eyes closed, just soaking it in. And I kept smiling as it was followed by Theologians (which had a false start as Nels didn't put his lap steel down fast enough). At one point in the night, Jeff had a slight problem with his guitar. A few songs later, he had a problem with his mic. This led everyone to leave the stage early, it seemed; soon, Jeff came back with an acoustic and perched himself on the edge of the stage to sing a wonderful Acuff-Rose; with each chorus, the crowd would erupt into cheers only to be silenced with a barrage of Shhhhs. Never the less, it was a great way to end the set.

The highlight of the first encore had to be the last two songs. Nels best solo of the evening came during Ashes of American Flags. It was the longest, the most patient, with this great tone to his guitar. It seemed that at least once Jeff tried to bring everyone to a close with his acoustic and Nels just kept going. This was followed by a ten-minute long Spiders, complete with crowd participation in the form of clapping that sped up right into Glenn bringing the song to a close. The second encore was just icing on the cake; not really my favorite songs, but who was I to complain.

Such a perfect way to spend a beautiful Friday evening. I remember not really paying much attention Wilco until Yankee Hotel Foxtrot came out -- how quickly opinions change, as these past three albums and the subsequent live performances that I have heard are just about perfect. Thanks, Wilco. And I am excited to be able to do it again on Monday night here in Manhattan at the Hammerstein. (Here's to hoping for a Company In My Back or Muzzle of Bees.)
