Stuck in the Elevator...

Recommended Posts

I got in the elevator this morning, like every morning and pressed the button to go to the top floor. About 15 seconds into the ride, the lights went out and the elevator stopped. It was pitch-black and it got hot really quick. Nothing in the elevator worked -- nothing. I was alone and in the past my cell phone has not worked in there, so I was a bit nervous. I tried to push the door open, but it would only open about an inch, nor could I get the hatch open in the roof. So I actually got kind of scared -- if there was a fire, I would be toast. After a couple minutes, the lights came on and I was able to get enough cellphone reception to get ahold of my boss, who called the fire department.

So, the fire department got there and it took them awhile to get the doors open. It turns out that the floor of the elevator was about 2 feet below the third floor of the building, so I had to climb out. I got out safe, but it made for a bit of a scare. I thought I'd share my (harrowing :)) tale.

We moved into a new building a few months ago, and the elevators here are a mess. This isn't just a new building to us, it's a brand-new building. People have been stuck in elevators, and even worse, a few people have been in elevators that have dropped a lot more quickly than they should have. I feel really lucky that I haven't been stuck yet, but a couple of people have told me that they've been stuck and had to climb up to the next floor to get out of an elevator.

the elevator in the school where i work is a decrepit beast. i've been stuck in it a few times, but the alarm button works (there's no emergency phone in it) and the doors are easily opened from the outside. ours is more annoying than scary.

I was once stuck in an elevator between the 13th and 14th floors of the county courthouse in Detroit. There were about a dozen other people in the elevator. One of them pressed thed "Call for help" button, and the woman on the other end asked "Where are you?". Someone said "Between the 13th and 14th floor." She said "No, what city and state?" Turns out that she was in Kansas City.

Seems like a poor way to run an elevator rescue operation. Anyway, the elevator started working like 30 seconds later.

Not the R. Kelly releases an awesome follow up to 2005's Trapped in a Closet thread I was hoping for.

I hate to say it, but I find that whenever I really need to use my cellphone (and I mean REALLY need to use it), it doesn't work. That sucks ass.

9/11, nyc blackout, steampipe explosion in NYC, trapped in elevator, stuck on subway, etc.

What a horror story, Abu! I'm not claustrophobic, but I bet that sort of situation could turn me claustrophobic pretty quickly.

Glad you got through it ok. :thumbup

It was...I'm not claustrophobic either, but I got a little scared when I couldn't get the roof hatch open. Then I really felt trapped.

When I saw you had just posted, I got a bit worried you were stuck again. Glad to hear you're okay!

PLEASE DISTRIBUTE TO ALL EMPLOYEES:

This is to inform you that we are working with the elevator contractors to improve elevator performance. Below are recommendations from the National Elevator Industry which are advised to follow in the event that you are in a stalled elevator.

the elevator in our building is very old and slow and jostles sometimes. reading this thread makes me sweat. maybe i should start taking the stairs, except my office is on the 4th floor and the only stairwell to that floor is a city block away from all other stairwells. rumor has it that if one lapped the building from the 4th floor to the 1st floor while using the stairs, they would have walked a mile.

i'll have to start packing my tostitos and salsa.
