Finally, the best week of the college football year!

So who cares if this is the first time both teams come into The Game off of losses since 1959. It still is for the Big 10 championship and a trip to the Rose Bowl. Just like 1978!

Go Blue!!!!

Ok, I'll admit it--in some ways I'm almost a little relieved that OSU lost. Not that I'm happy about it, but maybe its time to let some of the angst go. Its been a good season, but so far it hasn't really been a fun season.

I've had the sense all year that this OSU season was mostly about trying to redeem the dismal end to last year. They were a much better team last year than they showed in that final game, and this year's team has had to carry the burden of a whole heap of scorn and derision from the general public--mostly fallout from that game last year, which most of this year's starters didn't even play in. Earlier in the year they played with a big chip on their shoulders and seemed to have something to prove--but after getting to #1 and staying there a while without being seriously challenged, they appeared to get complacent--again. :frusty At least that's how it looked on Saturday. (props to the Illini, of course--they always give us problems, even when they suck, so I knew this year's game could be trouble)

Oh well. I never really though this was OSU's year anyway, and its almost a relief to not have to worry anymore about wanting them to prove the doubters wrong or salvage a damaged reputation from last year. Screw all that. Its awful late in the year to start having fun now, but lets get back to what's really important:

I read something this morning that suggested that Georgia needs Tennessee to lose to make it to the SEC championship game, so I guess the Georgia-LSU scenario isn't a sure thing.

Yes. We need Tennessee to lose to Vandy or Kentucky to play LSU for the SEC Championship and we have to beat Kentucky at home this coming week. So, no it's not a sure bet UGA will play LSU (I hope we will). I'm not sure about the math of it all, but I saw something this weekend about us still getting a marginal BCS bid if we don't play in the SEC Championship, but we beat Kentucky and GT.

If Kansas runs the table and beats #5 Mizzou and #4 Oklahoma in consecutive weeks, they should be #1. I don't think that will happen though.

i couldn't even imagine that happening. this is all just gravy for KU fans. great thing is, just about everybody is coming back on offense and defense for next year. and that's a good thing considering OU and Texas will be back on the schedule. i just want our team to be respectable for the long run. if they happen to find themselves in the BCS hunt, all the better...but we're just thankful to be experiencing a season like this. to pretend that KU belongs in the upper tier of college football is ridiculous. that's something that is proved over decades of success, not just one season. i'm just thankful that they are where they are today.

I'm gonna call Oregon vs. Big 12 winner (kansas or oklahoma, it's a virtual tossup there) in the BCS championship game.

fixed it for you.i've had about enough of mizzou fans. they've sucked as long as ku has. it will all be settled nov. 24th.

:lol You need a little work on your smack talk.

mizzou's got that covered.i hate fans that run off at the mouth. especially when they've just recently discovered success. i don't want to be one of those fans. better to act like you've been there before and not be an a-hole.

If only more people thought that way.

As a lifelong Michigan fan (and Chicago Bears fan), I've learned to keep the smack talk in check. I'd love to go off about how the Wolverines are going to take down the Buckeyes this weekend, but I have no confidence about that game.

We are not exactly brimming with confidence down here anymore, either. :wave

Hell, I will go out on the limb: Henne, Hart, and Long get the win that justifies coming back for their senior year, Lloyd gets the better of the ol' Sweater Vest, Michigan gets redemption against the Ducks in the Rose Bowl, Lloyd retires on a high note, and Les Miles comes home after a victory in the MNC game against the Jayhawks.

I'm not sure I see any of that happening (except maybe your implication that LSU will win the BCS title). Miles would be crazy to leave LSU for Michigan, and I'm not convinced that Carr is leaving.

But I appreciate your enthusiasm... :lol

Carr is gone after this year. I'm about 85% sure of it. And if he's not, I'm jumping off the bandwagon. I've not been a fan of his for a few years now, and there's certainly nothing that's happened this year that has changed my opinion at all. They need to go after Les Miles with everything they've got, and if they fail in wooing him (and I really don't think it's an impossible task), they need to explore some other options. Carr has proven himself to be substandard way too many times now.

This week will be a good test of character for OSU. My hope is they come out focused and po'd about letting a golden opportunity slip away, and they tear Michigan a new a-hole the way they are capable of doing. If they win and complete the 4-year sweep of the UM seniors, I will praise the almighty Sweatervest.

If they come out groggy and apathetic and lose, it will go a long way toward confirming my suspicions that (despite his record against UM to this point), Tress might not be all that much better at avoiding late-season complacency than Coop was.

I said I was going out on a limb. My only fear is that tOSU has a great game and the Alleged Best Damn Band plays that #%$@& "Hang on Sloopy" over and over and over. When your seats are 4 rows behind the visitor's band, it can get pretty damn annoying.

You have to admit that it's got a good beat. And you can dance to it. :dancing

How about maybe they just met a real contender of a team in Wisconsin, and they were outplayed?

The Badgers lost to Illinois, Penn State, and Ohio State this year... all on the road.

The significance there is that the #2 RB, Lance Smith was suspended by UW (not by NCAA) and was not allowed to travel with the team after an argument with his girlfriend in the off season where he pushed her to the ground and was charged with battery.

I am not condoning this or minimizing what Smith did, but the bottom line is that Barry Alvarez (UW Athletic Director) levied the suspension on his player, not the NCAA...

As a Badger fan, I am a little conflicted. On one hand I want the team to be as competitive as possible, and having Smith at Illinois, Penn State and Ohio State to keep that strong 1-2 backfield rotation that was so effective at home... well that makes those ballgames turn out a LOT differently than they did. Seeing Smith run like a maniac yesterday even without Hill, I would bet that Loyd Carr would agree as well.

On the other hand, I respect why Barry suspended him... The residents of Madison do NOT want their campus to be the free-for-all that exists at places like Miami, LSU, and now USF, where hardcore thugs run rampant in the community as long as they can play well on Saturdays. WI is a fairly conservative State, and Barry sent a clear message to the players that poor conduct WILL have consequences in Madison.

I didn't mean to belittle Illinois either...

At the beginning of this season (and the beginning of this thread) I was one of many to think that the Illini were going to be a doormat like they have been the [past few years.

Ron Zook and his scrappy young guys put it ON this year and proved me wrong, and I will be the foirst to admit that I was wrong, and to say congrats to the Illini... They played well, and they beat the Badgers. I still feel that having Smith would have changed that game, but there's always next year.

OK, back to yesterday...

Everyone is crying injuries and "insignificance" as the reason that UM lost this game...

For the OSU and UM games, PJ Hill was out for the Badgers, as was a portion of their O line which had to be re-arranged to place the backups in the most effective spots.

As cryptique put it, anyone heard of injuries?? ALL teams have their issues with banged up players and issues with rotating in the backups where they can be the most effective.

Besides, last time I checked Hart and Henne don't play defense... and the key to the win yesterday was that the Badgers ran the ball at will all day on the Wolverines.

As for insignificance, after losing to Appalachian State, the Wolverines needed to play well every game so they didn't wind up in the Hormel Chopped Meat Bowl on New Years Day.... Besides, Wisconsin is a tough division rival, as was Illinois at OSU yesterday... and IMO, neither OSU nor UM would lay down on those games regardless of the consequence of next week's match.

Out of curiosity, which incidents of hard core thuggery are you referring to running rampant and unchecked at LSU? If memory serves me, over the past 3 years Les Miles has kicked 3 or 4 players off the team for breaking team rules. All of these involved kids getting in fights

at bars where they probably shouldn't have been, and none of them were with women. They were kicked off the team, not suspended, for breaking rteam rules. Heading into the Bama game, Miles Suspends the #2 QB in a 2 QB system for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. He did not do anything wrong and any and all charges were dropped against him, but he wasn't representing the team like he should and was suspended for the game. A game that if LSU lost to Nick Saban, the shadow that les has been in for 3 years is extended indefinitely.

The best player on the team and one of the best in the nation, Glen Dorsey, gives up millions as a first round draft pick last year to come back because he wanted to help the school and his team mates compete for a national championship and he promised his mom he would get his degree. A team that was as positive a role model college sports could have after the way they handled hurricane katrina 2005. Almost the whole team volunteered on their own at the Triage center set up at the assembly center for weeks. Lots of players had family members staying with them that season and their daily lives turned upside down. That team went 11-2.

Needless to say, I completely disagree with your comments and am a little offended.

Internet rumor (MGoBlog) is that Carr will announce his retirement next week. If this is true, I hope it was a decision that he made on his own, and was not forced into it by the Athletic Dept. and or others in the University's administration. The man deserves to go out on his own terms, and be remembered in the same company as Yost, Crisler, and Schembechler.

I'm sure he made the decision on his own terms, because the boosters, athletic department, etc. should have pressured him out years ago and failed to.

I really don't see what he's done that makes him as good as any of those guys. I happen to think Schembecheler is overrated, but still substantially better than Carr. He's had some good teams, but his some of his best years early on were with Gary Moeller's players, and the Michigan name takes care of about 80% of the recruiting regardless of who the coach is. The Carr years, IMO, have been defined by underachievement and failed ultra-conservatism.

As an Oregon fan from Eugene, I have to say that, regardless of what happens from this point on, I'm very happy with our season. I came into this year expecting nothing, and look where we are now. Fun stuff.

Good, so you're saying we can go ahead and take that #2 spot from you? Thanks. You owe us anyway for those blown calls last year. :angry

If the Wisconsin game showed me anything it is that if UM plays Oregon again, Michigan will still get hammered. I don't think it will be as bad as the first game, but the defense has shown me no reason to believe that they can stop a mobile QB. As for Carr retiring, I think it is the right time, win or lose this week. If UM wins, great go out on a high note while you can. If UM loses, he needs to be gone anyway because it is obvious that the freaking sweater guy (I refuse to say his name) has Carr's number like Carr did with Cooper. If Carr does retire I can only pray beyond any hope and doubt that they can lure Miles away from LSU. I know on the surface that seems unlikely due to LSU stature, and probably impossible if LSU wins the national championship, but loyalty and a chance to coach at your alma mater is a big thing. Also to avoid a huge drop in recruiting this year UM will need to make a splash with whomever they pick to be head coach. Maybe Ron English if they decide to stay in house.
