JUDE
I think you're missing his point...some people don't even try to get the things that ARE available for everybody to just go out and get for themselves. There are definite extremes at both sides of that debate, but there is creedence somewhere in the middle. Take it easy Billy Graham.

But the side of the debate that is always jumping to label everything as 'socialism' are not differentiating between the two at all. Tweedling there thinks that anything the government provides is socialism and that anyone who cannot provide for themselves is lazy. That's just false.
boywiththorninside
One thing that's very wrong about this country is that we still can't seem to support a top-flight professional soccer league, nor field a men's World Cup team with more than a long-shot chance at winning. I agree.

There are no absolutes on either side...but you'd never know that listening to either 'wing'. personally, i think it's okay that there are 'haves' and 'have nots'...or, rather, 'have nots because they won't make the effort to get'. providing the same exact thing for everybody across the board will be the downfall of civilization, plain and simple. c53x12
DC residendts do not have the same voting rights as everyone else in this country. The population of Wyoming is: 515,004 and they have 1 congressional and 2 senators. The population of the District of Coumbia is: 581,530 (not counting the non-registered residents) and we have 1 honorary congressional with no voting power. it is very very wrong.I agree this is wrong. Are there really only a half million people in all of Wyoming? Must be nice there.

Seriously, though....If you give the same thing to people that have not worked hard for it as those who have -- all the drive to achieve something is gone. Why should I work hard to get something when it's given to someone who won't work as hard?

I happen to think health care should be kind of like sidewalks and clean drinking water. Provided to all, regardless of bank account girth.

Atticus
Ellen DeGeneres sobs on her show after a pet adoption service takes away her dog. I just saw that on yahoo. I was going to make fun and then I felt bad for the dog, and for ellen. I attribute this personal growth moment to the thread about algorenobeloscarreligionandwhatnot. Provided to all, regardless of bank account girth. same exact health care or just some form of health care in general? a slippery slope for me...my brother has stayed in his current job for over a year, longest he's ever stuck w/ anything...predominantly because of the health care. bjorn_skurj
Call me a pinko, but I believe everyone should have the same level of health care, excepting plastic surgery. You want that shit, you pay for it yourself. Do poor people automatically get less clean water or broken sidewalks? (They do, a lot, actually, but I think they shouldn't.) The problem with running a society totally on profit motive is what we're seeing happening today - a development of a very small class of very rich people, who have more money than they can possibly use, to the detriment of everyone else, lower class and, increasingly, middle class. Mr. Kinsley
Bill Cosby bought the shows and won't sell rights to anyone because Buckwheat is racist. This may be an urban myth. False. As for what bugs me, it isn't so much one topic as it is the way that we are handling the topics. More and more we turn to name calling and doing anything we can to prove our theory correct, whether it is or not. I guess that could be blamed on the talk radio shows (conserv. & lib.), but that seems too easy of a scapegoat. Until we can look for truth and not uphold our ideological purity, we will get nowhere with any of the previously mentioned topics. Especially Loony Tunes.
