solace
SOOOOOO good. definitely one of my highlights of SXSW so far
TheMaker
Yeah, these new songs are friggin' exceptional. The NPR stream has basically been my work music since it aired live! I'm actually one of the few fans who feel that Z didn't represent a step down for MMJ, I think, but just for variety's sake (and because At Dawn is my fav MMJ disc) I'm glad that some of the new stuff is sounding more expansive than a lot of what was on that record. I'm also loving the blue-eyed soul aspect to the slower songs, which is really striking. First Wilco, now my other favourite contemporary band. Woo!
sky blue bats
i guess there is no way of getting a copy of the npr stream? i want to take it with me!!

Was digging the new songs I herd, although i didn't hear the whole set. But someone clue me in was there background vocals about Peanut Butter at one point loL? TheMaker
Ha! Yeah, there's some weird line in "Highly Suspicious" about "peanut butter Pulitzer Prize." The whole tune is a blast of self-conscious silliness. Thanks for the portable version of the stream, Lynch!

I am really diggin' em all. I had Highly Suspicious in my head all evening. Sec' Walkin is my favorite right now. Good thing Wilco announced the new shows (going to Winnipeg AND Fargo!!!), or MMJ might have overtaken them..........

TheMaker
And what's really amazing is that I'm Amazed is easily the least impressive of the new songs and still ranks among MMJ's absolute best.
solace
i'd have to disagree with you there... and judging from audience reactions at the Austin show, it seems that "I'm Amazed" is the one new song that immediately caught peoples ear as well. people were pretty unsure what to think of "Highly Suspicious" overall, which i'd have to agree to a point. it's a fun song, but the deep backing vocals just seem a bit goofy to me. usually like MMJ at their more serious i guess. it's definitely a fun live song though! I went to M. Ward & Jim James at St. David's Episcopal Church last night (capacity: 240 seated ) and taped it: M. And I agree with you about Highly Suspicious, it made me laugh but thats it, the chorus sounded like mettalica with prince in the background.

I would agree. At first I was really diggin' I'm Amazed, but after listening to Sec Walkin', Smokin' from Shootin', and Touch Me I'm Going To Scream I am enthralled with all those songs. Aaaaaand, there's still 6 more we haven't heard.

"I Will Be There When You Die," just destroys me. Jim's voice is just perfect on that one. One of these days I'll see him solo.
