Sweet Papa Crimbo
I was not aware of this - that is sort of shitty. I'd be interested to hear the band's justification for this one. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeit I'm not a member of Wilco, but common sense tells me the answer: THEY WANT AND NEED THE NATIONAL EXPOSURE THAT SNL WILL GIVE. Believe it or not, these guys do want to make money. They have families and mortgages AND they employ people who have mortgages and families. The image of the happy troubadors performing for the simple love of music is nice, but the instant you start being a working band, you have people who depend on you for their livilhood (sp). I'm SURE the folks in Charleston will get an outstanding show when it is made up.
lamradio
Yes, people are wrong to think that NBC or SNL are paying Wilco to do this. But its also a silly notion to suggest that Wilco is not getting paid for this (indirectly). Wilco is doing this for free exposure that will hopefully lead to increased record sales. Money drove this decision. (1) I understand why they are doing it, (2) I would be bummed if I lived in Charleston, (3) People have a right to be upset, and(4) the band did the right thing by rescheduling the date so quickly. Yes, I'm incredibly disappointed that I'm not going to see Wilco this Friday, but I agree 100% with the above statement. I guess being a performing musician for most of my adult life, I know where they are coming from... They're running a business.. And sometimes, the fans have to suffer for it. But still, Wilco has a record of being very loyal to their fans and heck, they instantly rescheduled Charleston.. A lot of bands would just cancel and then be done with it. Yes, they didn't handle the situation perfectly (they could have posted the news on their website sooner, they could have rescheduled for a sooner date), but I think giving the circumstances, they handled it very well. It's going to take a lot more than that to lose me as a fan.

jakobnicholas
Saturday Night Live is still worth tuning into. It's a little up and down in the sketch material, but hasn't the show always been the like that? I'm SUPER-PUMPED to see the Wilco live from New York this Saturday night!!!!!!!!!!! Um.....where the hell is Charelston?
Good Old Neon
You are extremely (sp) cynical as to the motives of this band. Could you withstand the kind of true believer, purity of purpose standard that you want them to adhere to I couldn't. I tend to be of the opinion that you go home with the girl you took to the dance. Lammycat
Exactly. This won't automatically make more people like them. Carrie Underwood was on SNL last week. I still don't like her.Yes you do. You just don't know it yet.
JUDE
Alternately, this is a chance for every current and loyal customer with a TV to enjoy Wilco playing a couple of songs live. I'm sure you'll be sitting there, watching all of that excellent program, waiting with baited breath for the Wilcos to play. P.S. I'm sure we will see a resurgence in the popularity of Adult Contemporary after the airing of this show.

bobfrombob
Radiohead is about the only band with no ego etc in caring about $$$. They make enough I believe is what Thom said about giving their album away free..... Talk about good PR...I can understand you being disappointed but if this is meant be the basis of an argument that Radiohead is more fan-friendly or less greedy 'cause they gave away their album, you haven't been paying attention. Guest Muncle Douchey
Jeff sold out when he moved to Chicago from Belleville. Everyone knows that. I know he's got to be living the high life in Chi-town. If he was a true artist, he'd still be living in the shitty apartment across from the warehouses behind Family Video. :smirk you may have been kidding, but this is the dumbest post, in the dumbest thread. ever. JUDE
I said "current" loyal customers... My bad. So in your opinion, the need's of the many fans outweigh the need's of the few concert goers? Also, Carrie Underwood is way hotter than the Wilcos.

It's going to take a lot more than that to lose me as a fan. Lamrod, you are very level-headed, compassionate and realistic. The instant rescheduling is impressive. I've been in situations where shows have been out-right canceled, or have held tickets for postponed shows for months before a new date has been announced. I also had one incident where I went to the trouble of leaving my 2-year-old with my parents and driving five hours for a show (different artist), only to stand in line for three hours and learn that the show's scheduling was such a clusterfuck that the band may or may not have gone on. We wound up missing the show. Was I disappointed? You bet. Did I blow a gasket? No. My friends and I pulled out shit together, went exploring, and wound up having a lot of fun. It's called "making the best of a bad situation". I've got tickets for Nashville on Sunday night. Yeah, I had a moment of mild worry that the SNL gig might cause scheduling problems with that show, or that the hoopla of being glowing supernovas might affect their Nashville performance. But does it matter? No. It'll all be fine in the end. Had Nashville been canceled, I would have been out the money for my hotel (yep, I prepaid to get a lower rate at a three-star hotel near the Ryman). Or, what I probably would have done - I would have made the trip to Nashville anyway and had a good time without going to the show. Shit happens. You can either piss and moan about it or you can power on and make the best of the situation. So you paid for air fare, took time off, booked hotels, etc? Go on to Charleston! It's a great city with a rich history, beautiful buildings and parks, the beach (which is gorgeous in the winter), good shopping, and some of the most mind-blowing food in the country. I think that would be a lot more fun and rewarding than maintaining a level of raised blood pressure over a postponed show.

cryptique
I hear John McCAin wants them to play for him instead of Nashville. Or maybe Obama needs them Saturday night instead of SNL.It is nothing but bullshit to cancel a sold out gig for a live TV appearance.SEll out or what ever First rule of show biz is the show must go on.... SOmewhere that doesn't mean the same thing anymore. I been canceled on before due to illness or bad weather or a show that didnt sell enought but not a sold out show the night before a TV appearance. Most bands would have made it work. SNL could have had the rehersal early friday and then they fly down to charleston for gig and fly back to NYC and in a hotel by 2am. They could have equipment flown and use rented pa system in NYC. I believe the band would have saved grace by making an announcement directly on the web site. Even if it was written by a pr firm but at least hey I m sorry but it is worth the exposure etc. So again I lose a little respect for the aura that Jeff alludes too.....I heard Jeff mention the grammys in one of the CHicago shows so I do believe he is on a PR roll and wanting all the attention they can garner at the expense of fans that truely support him. There really should be some type of consumer protection for crap like this. Plane tickets hotel reservations lots of up front expenses for 100's of people.Hell maybe sue SNL for screwing up my life for the week.Big man wins little man pays......all the students that had tickets arent there in the summer just lot of folks let down.Jeezus, dude, it's a fucking concert. It got rescheduled. Your ticket is still good for the makeup date. No one burned your house down or shot your grandmother or even kicked your dog. Get over it. Are you honestly going to tell me that if you had a chance to appear as the musical guest on SNL, you wouldn't rearrange your schedule a bit? The show may not be what it once was, but it's still an honor to play it. The rescheduling of shows sucks for those who hold tickets, but it's not the end of the world. Just adjust your plans. If you incurred travel and hotel expenses leading up to the original date, let's be honest: that was a risk you willingly took. It was a reasonably safe risk, but in this one case, it didn't happen to work out. Deal with it and move on. Say what you will about selling out; my main problems with Wilco playing TV shows, the VW commercials, etc, is that with the widening fanbase, especially after SBS came out, people will be attracted to Wilco via their boring, uninteresting material. basically people will like them because of the "classic rock" sound, the jam band-like guitar solos, the accessibility thats prevalent on sbs. their progression as a band, their overall musicality, their range, their willingness to experiment, tweedy's intelligent lyricism - the reasons i love wilco - will go unnoticed by this new group of fans. i noticed this a lot more significant directly after the release of sky blue sky.So you're saying ... You're better at Wilco?
