ponch1028
I appreciate those who have responded to my post, especially since they are of the opposite opinion of me. I really do appreciate their willingness to stick to their guns. I'm not really going to flood the board with back and forth simply because I too am sticking to my guns and just have a different perspective of it. It just seems as though a lot of emotion and passion is invested in this argument and probably most people are already fixed in their opinion. I guess to each their own. I personally just don't get the big deal. That's all. I personally don't think it has anything to do with me being blind in my "devotion" to the band. I just don't think it's as big of a deal as others. Hopefully others who disagree will concede that those who do not share their opinion aren't necessarily blind in their devotion as well. badu2fan
Here is a quote from Greg Kot's 'Learning How To Die': "We're not U2," Tweedy says. "We're not the biggest rock band in the world. But we are part of the fabric of certain people's lives who have tickets and are waiting to see us. And there is no doubt in my mind that for some people out there, we are one of the threads they are hanging on to. And I think what we have to do as a band is to make those people aware of how we need them as much as they need us." This is what I mean from what the band has said in past about their fans...... But now we know Exposure is more important. End of argument........ We are in a new situation with wilco and just need to adapt.... I think I will go see Radiohead august tour in spite of this BS>>>>>

I think it's obvious I let my emotions get me as well, so I certainly cannot stand above the fray when I am stoking the fire myself. Also, as someone who has not played SNL before, I certainly think Lorne Michaels was in the driver's seat and perhaps making concessions for the Residency was the one benefit they were going to get before moving on. Good Old Neon
If I had Charleston tickets, I'd definitely be peeved about this. But speaking as a Wilco fan living far from Charleston--in other words, speaking on behalf of the vast majority of Wilco fans--I'm glad Wilco chose SNL, because that's a gig I'll actually get to see; it's a move that shows appreciation for Wilco fans everywhere, not just the ones in Charleston. Somehow, I have a hard time accepting this was an act of charity

solace
Yes, people are wrong to think that NBC or SNL are paying Wilco to do this. But its also a silly notion to suggest that Wilco is not getting paid for this (indirectly). Wilco is doing this for free exposure that will hopefully lead to increased record sales. Money drove this decision. (1) I understand why they are doing it, (2) I would be bummed if I lived in Charleston, (3) People have a right to be upset, and(4) the band did the right thing by rescheduling the date so quickly.i'm not denying that there's not monetary gain potential here, but did ever occur to you that just maybe Jeff and/or John have wanted to play on SNL for years and years and have never gotten the chance until now? It is TWO songs1 It isn't "a gig I'll actually get to see". Wow. I hope that you enjoy the hell out of watching Wilco play 2 songs at differents parts of a sketch comedy show as much, hell, MORE, than I would have enjoyed a live show. allgodsmoney
Wow this is a mini-VW blow up. they haven't played Richmond in 11 years, but if I was in the same boat as Charleston, I would understand it completely and totally. To me this is a non-issue, they rescheduled immediately, and its a major opportunity to promote an album that has already been out for quite awhile. As for their not sending out a personal statement that's ridiculous. The band themselves probably had little say in the matter and they have actually played for three nights in a row. I'm sure it will be acknowledged during the makeup show and they'll play 38 songs. sell outssell outs! now I hate them!I'll never stand in line with awesome people again to hear sweet music, the bastards! Oh yeah, and what the hell happened to Conan? Eff'n sell outs!Chicken Pox my arse! Where is my Foo Fighters collection...?

To quote John McEnroe, "You can't be serious?".You missed the point. I said I will, like the vast majority of Wilco fans, enjoy two songs on SNL a lot more than the zero songs I would have heard otherwise. I didn't try to equate that enjoyment to the experience of a full live show; in fact, I preceded my POV by clearly stating that if I were you, I'd be ticked, too. Somehow, I have a hard time accepting this was an act of charity

I could see if they clowned your mom, but they rescheduled the show. Have fun at Radiohead, can I have your ticket to the Wilco show? And you know, they are really good to their fans. We complain about them playing the same songs and just last week they play every officially released song. These guys are awesome. I bet they'll do something special in Charleston to make it up. Doug C
Good Lord redux. I knew that. You are saying that 2 TV songs are better than nothing. I am saying that 2 Tv songs are basically nothing. I just don't get jazzed watching a band I like do a song on Conan or SNL. It's lovely and all but doesn't do much for me. I don't want to fight.
