NightOfJoy
The Beatles are the single most overrated band in the history of anything. Quoted for truth. They're good for inducing sleep though.
Sir Stewart
When people use the term "poor man's...." they are hipsters. Ha ha you just called PopTodd a hipster. Ha ha ha.
Lammycat
I can understand that. I was just arguing against your original blanket statement "nobody on this forum seems to know or appreciate Ween." That said: though I like them a lot, I can also understand why people don't get Ween. All the 'brown' and 'boognish' stuff can give the impression they're a joke band. I have a thing where I can get into any song (that I wouldn't normally enjoy) if I pretend it's Ween. I think that's a testament to their versatility. This is partly why I think they are underrated. They've come a long way as musicians since their onset but there's still that immaturity/frat boy aura about them that they created. I guess it's hard to shake but yeah, they are an excellent band with a lot of versatility. It didn't surprise me that the majority of the crowd (in my experience) had no idea who the Meat Puppets (opened that night) were, though.
cryptique
I have tried, but I just can't get into any of the following bands: Radiohead (post-OK Computer)Arcade Fire, or pretty much anyone else who's come out of Montreal in the last decadeWhite StripesDecemberistsThe Postal ServiceDeath Cab For CutieShinsBon IverNeutral Milk HotelMy Morning JacketModest MouseBright EyesTenacious DKings of Leon ...and I'm underwhelmed by, but don't mind listening to, the Avett Brothers and the Flaming Lips. tinnitus photography
I also tried the GBV thing and remain completely unmoved. what songs did you listen to? i find it hard to believe that a general fan of ROCK MUSIC could not be moved by some Pollardian creations Drive By Truckers has never written a good song.WRONG - see 'decoration day' or 'where the devil don't stay' or 'let there be rock' for more information Guided By Voices > Beatles. Really.you are correct Hair Metal > Grunge.WRONG - make a ~5 song EP of crap from Poison, Motley Crue, Warrant, Ratt and Skid Row and I'll counter w/ a mix from Afghan Whigs, Mudhoney, Seaweed, TAD and Love Battery
tinnitus photography
Super Furry Animals are the absolute best band making music today, and should be considered among the very very best of all time. if they hadn't started going seriously downhill since _Love Kraft_ i might back you. plus, the live show in '05 was great but they were the WORST act at ATP/NY this year...really disappointing to me. Sweet Papa Crimbo
Lovesexy is one of the best 3 or 4 records that Prince ever made. This isn't blasphemy...it's truth.
Sweet Papa Crimbo
You want musical blashphemy...I got your musical blasphemy. Leonard Cohen...meh. He's written two songs that don't make me extremely bored. Bruce Springsteen is one of the most important artists of the rock era, but he is becoming a Caricature the artist he once was. Patterson Hood's affected southern twang is beginning to grate on my nerves. That being said, Back of a Bible is one of the best songs ever written. Wayne Coyne (theFlaming Lips)ran out of coherent musical ideas and started being a novelty act after The Soft Bulletin. The Grateful Dead are really boring and owe their success to Hippy wannabees. Psychedelic music isn't really enjoyable if you aren't taking psychedelics. Jay Farrar shot his wad with TRACE. Jay Bennett was a genius, but his excessive instrumentation and overproduction practically ruined Summerteeth. I heard a Death Cab for Cutie song the other day (I Will Possess Your Heart) and I thought it was a YHF outtake I had somehow missed. And I don't mean that in a complimentary way. Elvis Costello is the fifth greatest artist of the Rock era. The wrong blues-guitar god got on the helicopter that night in August of 1990. The Beatles became THE BEATLES after they were no longer a going concern. Just like Uncle Tupelo became UNCLE TUPELO.
Shakespeare In The Alley
if they hadn't started going seriously downhill since _Love Kraft_ i might back you. plus, the live show in '05 was great but they were the WORST act at ATP/NY this year...really disappointing to me.Not going downhill at all. Love Kraft, Hey Venus and Dark Days/Light Years are all incredible records. Not to mention Gruff's two solo albums, and Stainless Style. If DD/LY had been similar to HV, I might begin to agree. Much as I love HV, it wasn't mindblowing at all. But it is a great record with a lot of complex vocal arrangements. DD/LY is nothing like anything they've done before, and it shows them at a really fresh, creative point in their career. Not that they've had anything but fresh, creative career points though. As for the live show, they aren't as energetic as they once were, but they still put on a good show. From what I've read, ATP was just a bad night for them. I saw them the Friday of that weekend and they were incredible. They were using rental equipment for all three shows, and had sound problems at ATP from what I've read. When they had sound problems in NYC on Friday, Gruff played Fire In My Heart by himself. They didn't have that kind of freedom at ATP.
chanman1128
Wayne Coyne (theFlaming Lips)ran out of coherent musical ideas and started being a novelty act after The Soft Bulletin. Even though I like a lot of their catalog, after seeing them live and hearing their most recent stuff, I can't help but question if Wayne Coyne is a true artist or a complete wannabee, talentless loser who just got lucky (a fluke?) with one great album (SB) and a couple decent, but overrated ones (Yoshimi, Transmissions, Clouds). Everyday, my opinion strays towards the latter.

MattZ
Ray Davies may be the greatest living songwriter not named Dylan. Muswell Hillbillies is a vastly overrated album. It's a good album, and it has moments, but on the whole, it doesn't approach the band's best work.

Well, that song is certainly an example of greatness from that album. What do you mean, the "2nd time in a row"? FWIW, I am seeing him tonight at Town Hall in NY so I can report back on how he treats the song tonight.
