PopTodd
Now, please keep in mind that this poll is asking about PURE SONGWRITING.Not innovative production methods. Not influence on popular culture. PURE SONGWRITING.JUST THE SONG, ALONE, BY ITSELF (I think that this is a more interesting choice and one that is a bit more fair to all parties involved.)
caliber66
George Harrison.
PopTodd
George Harrison. I'll add a choice for you, as long as it's still Beatles/Kinks.But please, do NOT ask me to add Dave Davies to the poll.
cryptique
Ray Davies is the best lyricist. Paul McCartney is the best writer of music. John Lennon wrote the best songs. So, clearly the answer is Paul Simon.
PopTodd
I'm just thinking that Davies is (of course, since I started this thing), pound-for-pound, the best pure songwriter of the bunch.•Waterloo Sunset•Two Sisters•Sunny Afternoon•Oklahoma, USA•Picture Book and, yes•Lolaand•You Really Got Me And dozens more are so freaking amazing that they bring me to tears, as much for the quality of the craft as for the emotional content of the song. MattZ
PURE SONGWRITING.JUST THE SONG, ALONE, BY ITSELF I can't think of songs that way. Waterloo Sunset may be the best "pure" song, alone, by itself, but I can't separate it out. A song is the whole package. And with that whole package come the voice that's singing it, the harmonizing behind it, the instrumentation built around it, etc. I have no idea if the Kinks songs, on their own, are as good as the Beatles'. Maybe they are. But the Beatles songs are better for all those reasons -- the voices, the musicianship, the production, etc. And I love the Kinks -- this isn't a knock. So, I abstain. uncool2pillow
Ray Davies is the best lyricist. Paul McCartney is the best writer of music. John Lennon wrote the best songs. So, clearly the answer is Paul Simon.Amen!! I decided about a year ago Paul Simon might be the best songwriter of the 20th century. Lennon/McCartney together might be better, but Simon's longevity surpasses.
