LouieB
Okay so I am not a Smashing Pumpkins fan or anything but when I read about this it kind of makes me sad. I mean I know lots of musicians play Vegas for big money and the many oldies/classic rock/country artists of the past make a decent living playing casinos and other sorts of lame venues, but somehow this really strikes me as weird and upsetting that the formerly biggest group from Chicago and a million record selling group like this has gone so far downhill that this is an event of massive proportions. I mean if I were a fan I think I would find it even weirder. I don't know. LouieB
jimtweedy1977
before you know it, they'll be playing petting zoos. i agree with you Lou, playing a casino is a sad state of affairs. my sister went and saw Boston at the casino in my hometown. i asked her if she knew if there were any zoos on their tour. she didn't think i was very funny. go figure. LouieB
before you know it, they'll be playing petting zoos. i agree with you Lou, playing a casino is a sad state of affairs. my sister went and saw Boston at the casino in my hometown. i asked her if she knew if there were any zoos on their tour. she didn't think i was very funny. go figure. I would go see the Pumpkins at the Lincoln Park Zoo; some pretty hip folks have actually played those gigs and I hear they are fun. By contrast a casino (I admit I gambled last weekend at an "Indian Casino" near Seattle and had a blast), is just plain pathetic. Reading about Elvis playing Vegas is totally depressing (see the Guarlnick bio for all the gory details) and really mostly it is about the money when you play a gig like that. Zoos and county fairs aren't far behind but at least those kinds of gigs cater to families and others less likely to go to clubs or concerts. Casinos are somewhat depressing places in the first place unless you go on a lark and don't spend your paycheck trying to get rich. This casino is just close enough to Chicago to get the original fan base out, but somehow the Pumpkins aren't savvy enough to play a venue here (as you all know we have plenty) that could actually win back some good will at this point. (And you know I was humming Casino Queen nearly the entire time I was playing the penny and nickel slots......) LouieB
uncool2pillow
My Morning Jacket is playing Harrah's Casino in Council Bluffs, IA. Not sure why. There should be a few great venues across the river in Omaha, NE.
markosis
I think Harrah's has some kind of outdoor concert venue or some such. When I was in Omaha a few weeks ago I heard the Roots playing from across the river. Yeah, the Pumpkins have been pathetic for so long, this doesn't really surprise me. WaronWar
I can picture it in 5 to 10 years: the Pumpkins playing Rib Fest in Naperville.
Saut Crapaud
i agree that casinos do not have the same appeal to me as other venues. they do, however, pay extremely well. i'm not a fan of theirs. but i do respect that they are continuing to play music in front of people and will probably receive fairly good compensation. if a johns hopkins trained thoracic surgeon takes a job in a small midwestern town instead of staying in a major metropolitan area, would you think that is equally sad? he/she is still doing what they love and providing for their service for people. Artifice
I can picture it in 5 to 10 years: the Pumpkins playing Rib Fest in Naperville. They wouldn't be the first. Trying to remember who I saw there 2 years ago.
myboyblue
They wouldn't be the first. Trying to remember who I saw there 2 years ago. Rib Fest in Naperville has actually had some decent acts. You may be thinking of The Bottle Rockets. In my opinion, it's a good venue for smaller bands to play to gain an audience. There is a subtle difference between making a living and trying to gain an audience, and being a nostalgia act.
IATTBYB
When I first read the title to this thread, I thought how pathetic it was that the Pumpkins were playing a casino on Fremont Street, that they couldn't even rate a casino on the Strip. Then I clicked the link in Louie's original post and almost spit my coffee up when I saw it was the Horseshoe in Hammond. Now that is pathetic.
PopTodd
At first blush, it does seem very sad. In fact, that was my first reaction, too. But, as long as they're still putting out the albums that they want to put out... it's gotta be better than seeing them at The World in Tinley Park -- or the Aragon. Plus, you know, Gen X are all hovering around middle age now, anyway.

Three dollars and 63 cents
Yeah, it's just Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain now. Sort of like how Guns 'N' Roses is Axl and whoever he can get along with long enough to play a show.
Wendy
This new place "The Venue" has not even opened yet. No one has seen a concert there. Why so negative about the place? http://www.harrahs.com/casinos/horseshoe-h...-us-detail.html Plus, I think Wilco played a casino outside of San Diego last year, if I recall correctly. EL the Famous
This new place "The Venue" has not even opened yet. No one has seen a concert there. Why so negative about the place? http://www.harrahs.com/casinos/horseshoe-h...-us-detail.html that's what i was wondering. if you look at 'the joint' in the las vegas hard rock casino and the house of blues in mandalay bay...they are no different than the venues anywhere else not attached to a casino. sounds like 'the venue' in the horseshoe is no different. like blue said, i think it's pretty out there to lump them in on a classic rock-ish nostalgia trip.
