Beatles remasters are here!

Recommended Posts

Am I reading it right? Anyone get a different take from the info that's available online?

It's even worse, from what I understand. I've read that the Beatles Rock Band will not be compatible with other versions of Rock Band--i.e., you can only play Beatles songs on it. I have a Guitar Hero game but was thinking about buying Beatles Rock Band if it would let me download all those extra tracks, but if it won't, it's not worth it.

That, and one of the features of BRB is apparently 3-part harmony vocals. Thinking about my family playing the game, that's not a feature, that's a bug.

Why is the stereo mix also included on the mono version of Rubber Soul? I don't understand.

Because that's where they decided to put it. The '65 stereo mixes are probably of more interest to collectors (i.e., the people who are likely to buy the mono box) than anyone else.

So the stereo version of Rubber Soul will be different then the stereo mix included on the mono version? Again, why the hell did they make this so complicated?!

What's confusing? There are two different stereo mixes -- one from 1965, one from 1987. The 1987 one was released on CD. The 1965 one wasn't, because it has pretty drastic stereo separation, and consequently people generally prefer the mono or 1987 stereo versions of that album.

So, the stereo box will have the 1987 stereo mix made by George Martin. The mono box will have the original mono mix, plus (as a bonus for completists) the 1965 stereo mix, even though it's kind of shitty.

I have to admit that now I am confused too.

The way I read it is that the remastered stereo set contains the 1987 George Martin-approved stereo mixes for all CDs.

The mono box set includes the original stereo mixes for Help! and Rubber Soul probably because they can. Those two albums are short enough to include both versions. The first four albums never had stereo mixes until 1987 and the albums beginning with Revolver were too long to include two versions of one album on the same disc.

I am wondering if all this hoopla is worth it.

I was a huge Beatles fan. I guess everyone goes through that discovery phase. But now I am bored to tears with those records. I have heard them way too many times now.

Will the pre-1987 Stereo mix make a difference in the grand scheme of things? Will those little audible nuances be worth the cash?

I have all the Purple Chick collection and when i listened I thought, "yeah... a little differnt". Then never listened again. Will these remasters be the same?

Is this really just one last gasp for boomers to re-hash their greatest (and most stale) musical triumph? or is it they have finaly cashed in the last sacred element of their culutre on the alter of commercialism.

Have I exceed the question quota for one post?

We all obviously have our own points of view, but if I ever found myself bored by The Beatles, I would push and shove to the front of the line to jump off the bridge.

I finally decided to order the mono boxed set from Best Buy. It'll be curious to hear these new remastered cds and see how much of a difference there is in the sound. If it's anything like the Love CD, I anticipate good things. In any case, it'll be neat to have this collector's item.

should I get mono or stereo? Which would be better? I know this has probably been discussed, but I couldn't find anything

I'm getting both, since I'm a Beatles nerd, but if you only have the money to get one of the box sets, I would make it the Stereo version, if for no other reason than the fact that you'll get all original albums in one set. Also, I happen to like stereo better, so I'll probably listen to the stereo box more often.

That's a shame, really. They should have went original all the way.

Well, at this point, I wonder what's original and what's not.

Let's take a real trip back in the sixties. Damn, I was born in January 1969, at the time the Fab Four were struggling in the Let It Be sessions.

So the CDs I have are all I need. Got it.

Honestly, they suck. Especially the White Album.

I don't think they'll release the mono discs separately.

I'll be happy to have a bet with you on that. They've done all the hard work - all they need to do is remove the box they keep them in. But, before that happens they'll do another run of the box set (which won't be numbered - they've made it clear that it's only limited in regard to the fact that the first batch of box sets are numbered) and this will be half the price.

Actually, talking about box sets coming down in price. Anyone else seen that you can buy the bee gees (first 3 albums) box set from rhino for only £14.99 here That used to be about £70 to buy - and contains the mono and stereo versions of each album plus 3 discs of bonus material from each album (and it's great bonus material too!) Anyway, anyone feeling ripped off about the beatles box sets should grab this instead - it's a bargain.

Agreed.

The mono box is mostly a collector's curiosity for hardcore Beatles dorks like me. The stereo box is for the masses.

That's right. You are an old dude. I hope the master tapes did not get trashed back in the 1990s. It could be that they are simply to far gone to do a new digital transfer. That is probably talked about somewhere, but there is so much stuff out there about these releases, I may have missed it.
