pillowy star
I hear you Loretta. All I want is a bloody half-time job that doesn't include pornography or cleaning toilets. Only to keep me busy in the afternoons and get some extra steady cash in. Yet, I've given up on numerous possible job options already because I was quite openly too daft to fill out the online applications, and/or filled them out which took about 2 hours only to click on "submit" and then get the "page couldn't load" message. I just today found something different though. It is a job in a countrywide private tutoring company (Tara used them in 2004 too), they want someone to run their branch in my hometown during the afternoons, and guess what? They want you to just come in and introduce yourself
bilbrekm
I've been out of work since the end of January. I left a secure job in Raleigh to come back home to Detroit, after missing my friends and family. I use about 6 job sites on a daily basis. I send hard-copy and emailed resumes to companies on all the 'Best Of' lists... I've even had to expand my search to about 10 different cities nationwide (Chicago and DC being tops if I am forced to move). It's not getting any easier out there, but hope and having the faith that things will get better gets you by. One trick I've learned is when to know you need a break from the search (if you are, indeed, treating it as a full time job). Burning out from searching for a job can suck-it only leads to a brief spiral downward (which no one wants). Good luck everyone-and if anyone knows of a marketing/pr/business development job ANYWHERE let me know. My resume is always ready to send out.

They "just want you to come in and introduce yourself?!" That is AWESOME! bilbrekm, good luck on your search!
kimcatch22
Vibes to all those job-hunters out there. My best friend moved from Chicago to Atlanta back in July and despite having 10+ years of academic library experience (including work in circulation, cataloging, and serials acquisitions) has yet to even get a phone interview from any of the university libraries he's applied to down there. These aren't even librarian jobs either -- they're support staff.
EL the Famous
are any of you jobseekers opposed to wearing a french maid's outfit?* * males will have to provide a picture prior to submitting a resume.
yermom
I wear a French Maid's outfit on a regular basis any way. Laundry days, y'know.

miss jayne
How about volunteering at a place that interests you. Most non-profits seek volunteers and many times that leads to meeting someone that can help you. As for online communtication, although I have not yet had to look for a job that way, it still astounds me to come back from two days off and have 4 pages of emails...and I only talk to most of those folks who sent them once or twice a month. And this is a small locally owned place...on a astrological note the aquarian age does have an aspect that indicates humans could blend with machines
yermom
Volunteering would be so kickass if it paid. (I just had an issue here...paid or payed?)

Three dollars and 63 cents
The academic job market is always pretty fiercely competitive, but this year there seem to be a lot fewer job listings, which will in turn mean more people applying for each job. Most colleges and universities maintain their endowment funds by investing them, and with the stock market as crappy as it is right now, schools are losing millions. A lot of schools aren't making as many hires this year, or have instituted all-out hiring freezes. I'm already starting to think about what I'll do if I can't find a tenure-track job for next year. Right now, I'd be pleased to find anything full-time where I could get health care, preferably in a place I wouldn't hate living for a few years. If that doesn't work out, I may pick up and move to a city, where I'll at least have more adjuncting opportunities, and hopefully I can cobble together the equivalent of full-time work teaching at a few different schools. I hope it doesn't come to that, but I know it might. The only good thing that might come out of this lousy economy is if I can reconsolidate my eleventy-billion dollars of student loans at a lower interest rate.
Guest Speed Racer
How about volunteering at a place that interests you. Most non-profits seek volunteers and many times that leads to meeting someone that can help you. I was going to post a similar suggestion. So long as you're out of work, reserve a portion of your day for job searching and a portion for volunteering. A lot of organizations and causes that you find interesting can make use of skills you have. You'll also be surprised at the number of working folks who volunteer their time at the organizations, and meeting this people will definitely increase the your network for potential jobs. The place I work at doesn't advertise our openings; we just get emails periodically asking if we'd know anyone who needs work. In the year and a half I've been working here, two of three of our new hires met my co-workers through volunteer organizations and hobby groups.
turtlegirl37
Might be a good time to go back to school, if that is a need/interest. BTW, where I work, we are also in a hiring freeze except for urgent, essential positions. All other vacancies are being held open until who knows when. The big wigs say we are balancing the budget through "shrinkage," which always makes me think of that Seinfeld episode. Oh, those silly administrators!
NightOfJoy
Dont worry.......in only 9 to 18 months, the job market will be robust again.
Sweet Papa Crimbo
Geeze, it's like we don't have to have actual, physical, human contact ever again. There are days when I could TOTALLY get behind that.
mfwahl
I work in employment advertising in the Tampa Bay, FL area. This area has been hit pretty hard, some local areas experiencing an unemployment rate over 10%. Recently, I have seen demand is increasing slowly. But here (may be like this everywhere) besides holiday specific stuff, people basically stop hiring, waiting until after the holidays.
cryptique
here ya go, jobseekersHere's more about getting jobs with the new administration.
yermom
Dont worry.......in only 9 to 18 months, the job market will be robust again.Awesome, I could have a baby and eat it during that time...because I'm going to get hungry if I don't find a job soon. (That's right, I'm a baby eater.)
MrRain422
For real. 9-18 months sounds nice but at this point I may be homeless by January.
EL the Famous
jobby job vibes to everybody seeking employment. i'm okay, but we just went through another massive 'workforce reduction' where my sector was hit the hardest. more work friends gone, such a bummer. yermom
Wanna know what sucks? My resume! It's pathetic! I've got a random assortment of retail, manual labor, and waitressing experiences under my belt. I also have 89 college hours completed and they're all over the place...in school, out of school (time off to drink), in school, out of school (time off to grow a baby), in school, out of school (couldn't afford it). If I were a prospective employer looking at my work/school history, I'd think, "This chick is a flip flopper, a back and forther, lacks focus, rambler, can't stick with anything..." and I'd pretty much be correct. mfwahl
I'm in the same boat as you. Before I got my current job, they had me write up a piece on the holes in my resume. My resume looks like garbage, but I'm a good worker. I had to explain here's when I dropped off the legitimate working world to be a professional musician for a couple years. Also, I took a lot of semesters off from college, and I've also moved around a lot. I'm lucky they let me explain everything. I didn't hear back from a lot of places, and I'm sure it's because my resume is so ugly. Another thing, apparently video resumes are becoming more popular. Anyone have any experience with these? Duck-Billed Catechist
I got my job through a temp agency, which can be kind of a raw deal. I understand they typically charge the employer a 70% mark-up on what you get, plus no sick/vacation days, etc. However, they can get your foot in the door. Just something to consider.
