embiggen
this was released 40 years ago today! by far it is my very favorite Beatles album. I love every song on it, with the exception of may be Ob-la-dee-ob-la-da. I used to have the poster that came in the album that my parents had, but left it in a dorm room when we had to clear out during Spring Break. anyone else have any thoughts, memories, what have yous... cryptique
I don't have my poster anymore either. The first Beatles album released while I was alive. Though I'd been a fan since early on, it took me until seventh grade or so to really start getting into the Beatles. I had a friend whose older brother had all the records. We would play those things to death, and we played the White Album more than any of the others. Whenever I listen to the album these days, I associate it with the house my friend lived in back then, and us blasting "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" (among others) on the living room stereo. embiggen
The White Album mostly reminds me of this: it was played often on this contraption. actually, I think ours looked more like this:
Atticus
sure as shit beats the girdle off of Pet Sounds (great album, nice thread flickity)
Winston Legthigh
The White Album mostly reminds me of this:That pic made me laugh - my parents also had a huge piece of record-player furniture. The White Album is the first album that I can remember listening to and loving. That and the 1812 Overture. I played it all the time when I was a kid. It was my parents' copy. I can still remember where the pops and scratches occured, especially in Dear Prudence.
jff
I remember once when my parents were out of town a high school friend came over to hang out. Unfortunately he brought another one of our classmates (who I was friendly with, but wasn't really a friend) and his older brother (who I had never met and hope to never meet again) with him. I couldn't get these jackasses to leave (or to shut the fuck up so I could sleep), even though I had to go stock the produce section at Winn-Dixie at 7 the next morning. While these guys were over we talked about music a little and, naturally, conversation turned to the Beatles. I remember the older brother aggressively insisting that the White Album is the only Beatles album anyone needs to own, while being dismissive or derogatory towards other Beatles albums. Fucking loser. At the time, I was in love with Rubber Soul and Revolver, and I had not yet heard the White Album in it's entirety. I really like the White Album, and several of the songs are among my favorite Beatle songs, but I don't think it's their best album. Maybe I'd say it's their third best. (I rank Abbey Road their best). I suspect it'll always be tainted to some extent by that experience.
mountain bed
I had "Pepper", "Abbey Road", and the Red and Blue LPs when I was really little but for some reason I never acquired the White Album until I was in my late teens. By that time I had already seen the movie Helter Skelter and read the book so that LP is always linked to Tate/LaBianca in my mind - and it still creeps me the fuck out. Great record though. Whitty
Popmatters has a very detailed week-long retrospective on the White Album this week... Yeah, I was -11 years old when it came out It definitely doesn't mean that twenty-somethings can't find some connection though. "Long, Long, Long" might be the most underrated Beatles track of all time.
Sir Stewart
Yeah, I was -11 years old when it came out It definitely doesn't mean that twenty-somethings can't find some connection though.Or twenty-somethings in the year 2911.

Gobias Industries
-21 years of age at its release. Extremely solid, didn't really ever get to discover it until last year. shame on me, right? A top 10 album of all time, no matter whose list.
OOO
I was -17 years when this came out, but its one of my faves. When I was a young one, Rocky Raccoon was my favorite Beatle's tune. I used to get a small thrill while in hotels to find that they had Gideon's Bible.

A top 10 album of all time, no matter whose list. I'm older than you? -20 when it was released, and as with every Beatles album, I've been listening to it for about a decade. It's got the most great songs, but I still put Abbey road over it.

It's got the most great songs, but I still put Abbey road over it. Haha, do I sound more mature than I really am? The truth is that the Beatles has so many tracks it has the most great songs on it, but I think that argument is moreover justified because there's no real bad track on it, just some "not as good" tracks (much like Rubber Soul through Sgt. Pepper which precede). Of course, I'm also certain that basically every musician out there would sell their soul or kill to have written a "not as good" Beatle track. "Long, Long, Long" might be the most underrated Beatles track of all time. It's definitely top 3 George tracks for me, with "I Want to Tell You" and "Here Comes the Sun," and has a high probability of being a top-10 Beatles song, which is impressive unto itself. Edie
I loved the red and blue records -- my sister and I used to laugh that we should listen to the red, white and blue records in that order. I remember my oldest brother brought home the white album when it was brand new -- I was 8 -- and we just were in shock about how different these beatles were getting (and looking!) even from the Revolver record only two years earlier -- or Sgt Pepper only one year earlier. The poster that came inside was rad... The only song I will not tolerate is Rev #9. I just skip past it. Sexy Sadie is one of my all time favs, as is Everybody's Got Something to Hide.
