NY post cartoon

Recommended Posts

It's stupid (not to mention not funny), but I don't find it racist. I think, as previously stated it was in reference to the chimp incident and the idea of a billion chimps eventually writing the works of Shakespeare. However, the author should have realized that 1) most people (not to mention NY Post readers) associate bills with the President's signature, not the Congressional authorship; and 2) when perceived as a reference to a black person, "monkey" will automatically illicit a reaction that the statement is racist (for better or for worse). Look at the Howard Cosell incident when he said "look at the little monkey run" when a black football player was streaking down the field. Was that racist? Probably not. But he was still raked over the coals for it. The cartoonist and the editor should have taken those two things into account and therefore it was stupid to print... even for the NY Post.

From what I understand, Quentin Tarantino, much like he did with the dead in the water John Travolta, has expressed an interest in reviving the career of Lancelot Link. Who, from what I also understand, is only now recovering from a 20-year drug fueled career filming and starring in monkey porn and life insurance advertisements.

It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

To be fair, they should be drawing cartoons of Obama as a monkey, since they did it a lot to the last president. In a world without racism, all our presidents would be drawn as apes without consequence!

The major difference being that throughout time ares have been associated with blacks in racist terms and with white people in terms of intelligence? One is more targeted and one more blanket like, pick your poison.

Me...I personally prefer my chimps and/or monkeys riding dogs, wearing glasses or shooting guns.

I don't think it is appropriate to be overly derogatory to any individual. Guess I am a bit sensitive about those kind of things.

I guess one needs to be the victim of a stereotype to hate them applied in any fashion to any person. Not to equate the black/african american/colored people/negroes experience with being called monkeys for 500 years (note the use of historic ethnic group names there) with any personal attacks I have experienced based on birth location, ethnicity or other sundry factors, but they are hurtful nonetheless.

My best advice...shrug it off and take one for the team. The bastards don't win unless you let them get to you.

I was looking for some of the more typical old Punch cartoons depicting the Irish as apes, but this one doesn't just hint, it puts it right out there:

I was thinking more along the lines of something like this one:

This is interesting too, from Harper's Weekly:

Basically trying to show that the Irish and the Negro are more closely related to each other than they are to the "Anglo-Teutonic". :rolleyes

So yeah, I'd say it's racist. But it's probably more stupid than it is racist. A hundred years from now, hopefully we'll look at something like that the way we look at the Punch cartoons now. Just a quaint reminder of the idiocy everyone took for granted.

I may be contradicted, but the NY Post never went after Bush that hard, as it is the Hannity/Limbaugh of tabloids.

Rather than focus on the disastrous social fallout generated by a fucking cartoon, I sure as shit wish Al Sharpton would focus his considerable talents and energies on the myriad, much more serious, aka - real, issues that don

So wha't the consensus on this, am I supposed to be outraged or what?

Olberman said I should be pissed about this display of racism but I'm waiting for the board to speak.
