Winston Legthigh
Is there a list of how each song is rated, where thereby I can make a determination if it's over- or under-rated?
nodep5
Agree. HMD is "out of place" on YHF, but it always gets the crowd going at every live show. To say that Wilco fans hate HMD is ridiculous. The truth is we all like HMD, we just don't like the intro drum kit edit.
deepseacatfish
Creepy place, that dude/bro clearly hasn't spent nuff time around here I actually do like Via Chicago, Impossible Germany, and Heavy Metal Drummer (even if it's my least favorite YHF track), on the other hand, Company in My Back is alright, but easily overshadowed by the equally quietly beautiful Muzzle of Bees. It should also be noted that I do like Son Volt, haven't listened to She & Him, and thought Bon Iver was good, but not the most stellar thing I've ever heard.
Moe_Syzlak
Is there a list of how each song is rated, where thereby I can make a determination if it's over- or under-rated?Spot on! This is actually a pet peeve of mine. Music is, to me, the ultimate in subjectivity. If someone loves a song, how can it be overrated t them. There is no objective measure of how a song SHOULD be rated in the first place. I may disagree with YOUR opinion of a song, but that doesn't mean I am MORE right than you. You know what is overrated... music criticism.
cryptique
Am I too late to be the first one to say that this guy's a tool? Here's where he really loses me: “Theologians' date='” sings Tweedy, “don’t know nothing about my soul.” Which prompts this question: Why should they? Why the hell—excuse me, why the heck—would scholars who study religion and spirituality know or care about the soul of a pop singer from Belleville, Ill.? It’s like if somebody wrote a song that had the lyrics, “Architects don’t know nothing about my house.” Well, yeah, they don’t. They don’t claim to. As absurd as the whole premise of the song is, Tweedy continues, “I’m an ocean.” Really? Maybe we can find an oceanographer somewhere? Anybody?[/quote']Attention dumbass: theologians talk about people's souls a lot. Tweedy is saying that those theologians may think they know a lot about souls in general, but they know nothing about his soul. You probably employ a similar rhetorical device when you rail against the media, or Hollywood, or Pitchfork, or your mom. Also, "I'm an ocean" is this thing called a "metaphor." Look it up. Also, re Via Chicago: I love Son Volt, love AM, don't like Bon Iver, am indifferent to Bonnie "Prince" Billy and She & Him, and like "Heavy Metal Drummer." So I guess I really don't fit in around here*. * I am creepy, though.
mfwahl
Sure to be an argument starter. A MAGNET writer picks the five most overrated and five most underrated Wilco songs:Argument starter? The choices and reasons in this list are bizarre that's for sure. But how do you respond to this "Via Chicago is overrated because you don't like the vocal anymore?" Ok, fine. They also play it live, there are demos, etc. The underrated list is so off mark. All of the underrated ones are pretty much fan favorites. The only one that they could have a case with is Shot In The Arm for being overplayed and they don't even go that angle. And to post a link to an article that calls Via Chicago creepy and completely generalizes it, and that's supposed to be an argument starter? For example: Magnet, I banged your mom last night. Counterpoint? I have more questions than arguments. Welcome to VC!
mpolak21
I think this list would work a little better if he used least favorite and favorite, instead of overrated and underrated. I am still scratching my head on how What Light, a song that got signaled out on a lot of negative SBS reviews, can be overrated. And how A Shot in Arm, one of the band's more popular songs, can be underrated. Also the audience for this type of list is going to be primarily Wilco fans, no? I mean it's pretty rare I'd want to read a longer article about a band's catalog, if I haven't heard the songs. So why all the potshots? Isn't it best not to shit where you eat? For the record the five most Appropriately Rated Wilco songs are... Jesus, etc.PanthersHandshake Drugs (the More Like The Moon version)Sesame Street version of Outtasite (Outtamind)Pieholden Suite --Mike
dondoboy
They did the same over/underrated thing with The Replacements, and that article just seemed to prove that the writer really had no clue about The Replacements and their fans.Is there link to this still? Just to prove that Magnet is overrated.
explodo
No this thread is not overrated and "Gym Teacher Man" is creepy! I think internet message board is creepy by definition. I shower after every post.I post from the shower.

Wendy
I think people are making potshots at the lazy journalism. Why doesn't Magnet just interview the band (hello, there's a new DVD and new album coming!) and post something more interesting than this lame list-making and a link to a 7-year-old article. Analogman
The trend these days, is making up lists of various things. I see such things in about all the music related sites or magazines I happen to look at/read. The days of Lester Bangs and/or long articles are pretty much over. I figure the goal of this thread was to get people to click on the links to the magazine. So, it is spam in a way. I have the following issues of Magnet: #54 and #57. Moss
I was just told in another thread that "Magnet" is the best american music magazine. Now this. Who am I to trust anymore? Actually I agree that "company in my back" is underrated for what it's worth but that's it! Bon Iver is not doing it for me yet but I keep trying.
Analogman
Creepy Magnet stalker. I should have said that there is good stuff to read in those issues. Is the magazine still like that, or is it just lists and reviews?
mardog
I would wager that most top architects would say that do know something about the construction of my house.
Chris_H_2
I remember about 2 years ago I read in a magazine (I think it was Maxim (hides in shame)) that the most underrated Wilco song is Magazine Called Sunset. I thought for a moment, and I actually agreed.

Elixir Sue
I can't think of even one person on here who hates Son Volt...I guess the HMD paragraph was just a lame attempt at humor.
Winston Legthigh
I can't think of even one person on here who hates Son Volt...I guess the HMD paragraph was just a lame attempt at humor. "Hate" might be a strong word, but I never met a Farrar-sung song that I like. I can't stand his voice...
Elixir Sue
Well, I'm not a huge fan of his voice either, but for me it's more indifference than hatred.
Analogman
I think the Wilco verses Son Volt feud goes way back to the olden days. It could be that more recent fans would not be familiar with it and/or Wilco and Son Volt are no longer on the same path musically, so the feud no longer holds much interest.
