Top 3 most underwhelming bands/artists you've ever seen

Recommended Posts

I figured I'd continue the trend, and seeing as I'm usually a Negative Nelly.....

Top 3 bands or artists you went specifically to see that were surprisingly disappointing

Smashing Pumpkins (oh my god, like watching paint dry)

The Misfits (3rd or 4th incarnation with Jerry Only as the sole original member....however another show with all original members besides Danzig was REALLY good)

Evan Dando (yawn fest)

Off the top of my head:

John Mayer (although we really didn't go to see him, Guster was opening)

Beth Orton

My Morning Jacket (gonna get flamed for that one... B) )

did you see these two at the same show?

that was the first time i'd seen MMJ, opening for Beth in '02, they blew me away.

i actually enjoyed Mayer SOME (just his guitar playing really) the first time i saw him in '01 before his first big album was released. played to a half full small club and i went on the recommendation of a friend (we don't speak anymore :lol).

but i saw that same tour you saw a year later just to see Guster & Martin Sexton (2 of my absolute FAVORITE artists live), and left before John to go see The Shins @ a small bar :)

No, not the same show. Saw Beth in fall '06 I think. It was a late show and I was tired so that probably didn't help but I was bored to tears. Bored at MMJ too, that was January '07.

I wish Martin Sexton had played when I saw John w/Guster! At least Guster was worth it (always are). We were just pissed off though because it was billed as a co-headlining tour and Guster played for about an hour and John played for two hours and was still going when we left. Actually, I think Trippin' Balls opened for Guster that night... I've seen them so many times it's hard to remember... but that was fun.

Weezer - They were headlining following the release of The Green Album, played for about 50 minutes, no encore, completely emotionless, no talking to the audience. I'm still a huge fan of the albums (mostly the earlier albums but parts of the later albums), but I will never go out of my way to see them live again.

Dar Williams - I've seen good, energetic shows from her, but I've also been bored to tears at others. I probably shouldn't be too surprised with being bored at a Dar Williams show, but there I was all bored and surprised. She opened one show with her boring cover of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." Not a great way to start a show. "Here's a boring, slow cover song!" On the bright side she has a generally short and polite audience and the line at the bar is always short!

The New Pornographers - No Neko or Dan, and they only played for 45 minutes because Berklee College of Music, who organized the show, decided to have Berklee students play for an hour to open the show. The also only played 2 non-Challengers songs (Use It and Spanish Techno)

The Police - Saw them at Bonnaroo, and while it was fun to hear the hits, it was wildly unimpressive, and I can't believe how much some people paid to see them.

Victor Wooten - I went for free, but it still sucked pretty hard.

That's too bad, because they can be great live. I haven't seen them with Neko yet, but I have really enjoyed the two shows I saw them play (both pre-Challengers).

1) Nana Grizol - this past weekend, after someone on this board said I shouldn't miss them (hey explodo!)

2) Zumm-Zumm (featuring members of Nana Grizol, about 5 years back. Sounded like crap and their hippie dancer stunk of an awesome mixture of ass and sweaty hippie girl armpits...yum. Too confrontational on every level)

3) Thursday (6-7 years ago, the band left after only a few songs due to the singer jumping into the mosh pit to only be knocked out)

Flaming Lips....I know a lot of you will disagree, but it was more of a show than a concert. I am there for the music, i could do without all the other bullshit that comes with a flaming lips concert, i was not digging it.

Phish...Phish is okay, but I just can't sit through 30 minute long jams, and the concert I went to had a couple of really dragged out jams...I was bored as hell while all these dirty hippies were noodle dancing.

I also went to Big SUmmer Classic one year and almost killed myself.

Really? I've heard his stuff with Bela Fleck and I would imagine that even solo he'd still be awesome. Granted, this is in the "I like to see bass solos the whole time" sort of way, so I can see it, but if you listen to his solo on the "Live at the Quick" album his Improv/Amazing Grace bit is solid gold.

Alanis Morissette: I really, really like her music, but seeing her live is painful. She looks totally disconnected from the audience and beyond full of herself. Not to mention, on this most recent tour, the setlist did not vary ONCE; how can an artist play the same exact set every night for two months?!

The New Pornos: This is only under the condition that neither Neko nor Dan are performing. Something is DEFINITELY missing from their sound when they don't have the full arsenal. When Okkervil River opened up for them last year, the headliner got showed up.

Juliette and the Licks: I only saw them open up for Muse at Red Rocks in 2007, but it was the most excruciating opening band experience I've ever had (and I have been to more than my fair share of shows). She was even dancing on me at one point as I was seated. That song was called "Get Up" or something like that and she had to know I wasn't into it--nobody was into it.
