owl
The loss of Jay Bennett is a big shock, and I want to say something about it on Owl and Bear. Since I host the Wilco Archive, I find I'm in a unique position to pay tribute to Jay through some of his live shows. However, I could use a little help. I'm looking to highlight some classic Wilco shows from Jay's era so that people can download and enjoy, but I'd like to have input from some Via Chicago members. Based on shows that are currently available on the Wilco Archive, what are your favorites?
aricandover
the July (29, 30, & 31) 2000 run @ the Fillmore, are must have shows
Guest Francis X. Hummel
I only heard it once but I quite enjoyed that Jeff/Jay show at McCabe's in '95.
OOO
The Kay-Settes (Jeff, Jay, Leroy) show on 09-11-1999 is a good one, and includes not only the first time Kamera was played, but also some nice rarities like Cajun Angel.
m_to_the_c
I quite enjoy his last with Wilco
calvino
Looking at the photos of that show on Flickr, it's obvious something had to give. They don't look like they were having much fun! http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterpreston/...ith/3565590136/ I thought the same thing when I saw those Flickr' pics, this morning. Sparky speaks
I love this show: Toad's Place New Haven, CT9/16/00 This is simply a terrific ROCK SHOW! Jay is on fire throughout and the show really demonstrates what an amazinf live player her was... I agree, especially the Who riff at the beginning of Outtasite(Outtamind) that follows the Casino Queen/Hoodoo Voodoo/Casino Queen (reprise), played near the end. Jay's guitar playing comes through loud and clear on the apparent sound board mix. I've been listening to it most of the day.

I'm looking to highlight some classic Wilco shows from Jay's era so that people can download and enjoy, but I'd like to have input from some Via Chicago members. Based on shows that are currently available on the Wilco Archive, what are your favorites? Jeff Tweedy/Jay Bennett *11-20-1996Jeff on guitar and Jay on guitar, banjo & piano, playing mostly A.M., Being There and a few covers. Great sound quality, setlist and vocal harmonies. *7-25-1999Jeff on guitar and Jay on guitar, keyboards, mandolin, playing mostly Summerteeth & Mermaid Avenue tracks, including the first time "Blood of the Lamb" was done live. Also amazing versions of "Down in the Willow Garden" and "The Auld Triangle." Funny hearing Jay's keyboard bubbling w/weird effects on some tunes, considering it was a folk festival. Good banter from Tweedy. Wilco *May 23, 1995Early show. Some of the A.M. and Uncle Tupelo tunes hit a little harder w/Jay's guitar work. *October 29-30, 1997On the Being There tour. Great energy from the band, stellar electrified country-pickin' from Jay and pedal steel work from Bob Egan. An early version of "She's a Jar" here! *September 4, 1998A rockin' show of Mermaid Avenue & Being There tunes w/some Summerteeth early stuff thrown in. "James Alley Blues"! *November 5, 1999Long set on the Summerteeth tour. Simply amazing show. Just look at that setlist. *July 30, 2000Perhaps the pinnacle of this version of live Wilco. Diverse setlist and great instrumentation. Loud, rockin' show.
mpolak21
Along with everything Charlie recommended... The April 20-21 1999 New York shows are among the best of the Summerteeth tour nearly everything on the album is played, the DVD is excellent, and the keyboard innerplay between Bennett and Leroy is superb. The Lounge Axe Funeral is spectacular as well. Jay's playing is all over the place in the best possible way during the show, and the band's loose and exciting sound of this era really comes across well on this set. There's a soundboard of the September 19, 2000 show from the Irving Plaza available, that's pretty amazing. I prefer it to the 9-16 show, which is great, but this setlist is just unreal-- 9-19-2000 Irving Plaza. If you need that show I can get it to you, I don't think that one's up on the archive yet, though I am sure Leslie Hapablap has that one as well. The DVD of the 7-27-2000 Seattle show is also highly recommended, I think that's Volume 59 in the project, great version of Mountain Bed. Jay's last show-- 7/4/2001-- might be my favorite live recording of Wilco, it essentially serves as a greatest hits of that lineup as almost everything you'd want to hear them play save for Misunderstood is touched upon and all of the songs sound great, particularly the Mermaid and Summerteeth songs with Glenn. I don't have a lot of the pre-Summerteeth era, so I'll have to delve into some of my earlier boots later to put up my favorites from those. --Mike

This is one of my favorites as well, and one of the first shows I reached for when I heard the news. I love Leroy's song Special Day, and Kamera sounds wonderful. --Mike
joshead
I second that Lounge Ax Funeral show. Jay tears up the solo on "Casino Queen." And they play "No Church Tonight" which Jay wrote and sang, and subsequently ended up on Palace.

Degenerex
I'd love to hear all of these Jeff/Jay solo shows. Any hints as to where I'd be able to find them?
Analogman
Unless someone puts them up at a BT site, or offers them up some other way, I doubt we will find them. There seems to be a lot of older Wilco/Jeff shows being posted at Dime A Dozen lately, so maybe they will show up.

cryptique
WinaAmp is the one I use.Yup. I really like Winamp, but I use "classic" skins -- I don't like the newer generation of them.
Analogman
Yea - I just updated the other day and lost the skin I had. I have not been able to find it again. Whenever I update, it always changes the FLAC file icon, which I thankfully know how to fix. I bet this sort of deal would have bugged Jay.
