Winston Legthigh
how cool was it for Philly to get to the playoffs in a shoot out win?!?! im not a big fan of the Flyers, dont hate them, but i think that is cool. it verifies the excitement of having a shootout.Or conversely, IMHO, it shows how pathetic the shoot-out is and how the league should get rid of it. A game shouldn't be decided on a skills competition. If the league was really behind it, they'd use it in the playoffs. Heaven forbid. Go back to ties.
TCP
I don't know, I'd rather have a playoff spot decided by something more than a shootout.
TCP
Wow... Detroit, Pittsburgh, San Jose all lost last night.
Smokestack Joe
good to see upsets in night one of the playoffs. not sure if that will happen tonight though. I'll be watching the Canucks tonight if i can stay awake. already into beer #2 (post-work beers)
W(TF)
Wish I'd picked up the Montreal upset. I watched the Buf-Bos game, pretty boring affair.
Kevan
I made these picks in my own pool of friends and family before the games started, but I'm gonna postnow, late. If you reject them because they're late, I will not disagree with your judgement. I will also not care, cause I could get every series correct and it will all be dead-eye-luck because I watched roughly 7 minutes of nhl hockey this season...: SJChicagoLADetroitWashingtonPhillyBuffaloPitt DetroitLAWashingtonPitt DetroitWashington Washington I will finally start watching the nhl in the playoffs, if I can. I hope I can, there is nothing better in pro sports
TCP
Holy crap Vancouver's Swedes are looking really good. Edler has been unreal. Quick has also been pretty good... This won't be as fast of a series as I had hoped! EDIT: Yes!! What did I tell you guys about them Swedish Canucks And Luongo looked like his old self! That save in OT... wow... Smokestack Joe
Great game Canucks and Kings. Capitals didnt look too good while I thought the Sabres really looked sharp.
tongue-tied lightning
looked to me like the sabres were outplayed, but have Miller to save them. they gave up a record 24 shots in the 2nd period.
Rusty Shackleford
Great game Canucks and Kings. Capitals didnt look too good while I thought the Sabres really looked sharp. I was at the Caps game, and it was excruciating. My only solace is that the Caps played very poorly, and Montreal played pretty well, and it still went to OT. I don't know why they seem to start the playoffs so poorly every year, but it's not good.
TCP
Yeah Ovie looked tired out there.
Winston Legthigh
Exciting game in Phoenix last night. Man I love NHL playoffs.

Smokestack Joe
yeah that assist he had was pretty sweet. bad defense on the play. the kid is good but im not a big fan. i dont dislike him, just not a fan. -- btw, im glad that your first post on ViaChicago was about hockey. caliber66
I was at the Caps game, and it was excruciating. My only solace is that the Caps played very poorly, and Montreal played pretty well, and it still went to OT. I don't know why they seem to start the playoffs so poorly every year, but it's not good.Exciting game tonight, too.
Rusty Shackleford
Exciting game tonight, too. Very exciting. I'm thinking they'll put Theo back in for Game 3, but who knows. It's looking like a pretty tough series.
TCP
This is exciting stuff, all the series are tied! (Except for Nashville and Chicago, who have only played one game). I'd love to see some real upsets happen... like Colorado beating San Jose.
W(TF)
I'd like to see Montreal and/or Chicago in the final, but I know that ain't happening. They're the only teams I really care about. Short of that I'd love to see Washington and Detroit get knocked out early. Some pretty ferocious hits in game 2's, especially by the Pens and Caps. (from what I saw) Not very surprising, it's such a physical game - but checking to injure players seems like the rule nowadays. The fans want blood, so that's what the league allows/gives 'em. TCP
3-1 Coyotes in the third.... how long till we see our old friend Osgood?
Winston Legthigh
3-1 Coyotes in the third.... how long till we see our old friend Osgood?Wings will stick with Howard. But, they're going to have to come up with a new gameplan if they want to get out of the first round. I wonder if this is the first time all first round series were tied 1-1. TCP
Anyone see that Sharks vs Avs game? All sorts of awesome. Poor, poor, Sharks!I really, really, like the Avs. Matt Duchene and Ryan O'Reilly (when was the last time a player drafted outside of the first round made the team the year he was drafted and did so well?) are the real deal... You can't help but like a guy like Peter Anderson after seeing him smile like that after they won.
Smokestack Joe
The Avs' are a true sleeper team. Lots of young talent and maybe one of the hotter goaltenders in Craig Anderson right now in playoffs. But this is what the Sharks do in the playoffs. They let "lesser" teams compete with them. Im not saying that the Sharks should easily skate by the Aves but they are a more talented team but chokers in playoffs. Still a lot of series left but i would not be surprised in the least if the Aves win the series. I've watched part of all Canucks vs Kings series and i must say that this is a great series so far. 1-1 after 1st period in game 3. lots of big hits, tight hockey. great series!
TCP
The first period had a half dozen of absolutely brutal hits. LA is damn good on the PP. The Sharks need to do a major overhaul. They need to get rid of either Thornton or Marleau. Nabokov is a large part of the problem, I think. It's kind of hard to pinpoint exactly what it is. They need a true playoff warrior, someone who can come in and lead by example... but I just can't see someone like Joe Thornton to be a follower. EDIT: HEY CANUCKS... IF YOU CAN'T KILL A PENALTY THEN HOW ABOUT YOU STOP GETTING STUPID FUCKING PENALTIES!!! :realmad More Edits: Ok, I am not one to blame refs... but the officiating has been embarrassing... both on and off ice. That was absolutely not a kicking motion.
Smokestack Joe
yeah wow, Kings really stepped in and turned it up. didnt see them much during the regular season, impressive. the place was packed and loud too.
Winston Legthigh
Sharks are fine. They're completely outplaying the Avs. Shots were 51-17 in favor of the Sharks. You can't be much more dominating than that. It's just that Anderson has been standing on his head and playing out of his skull, which is why the NHL playoffs are so great. A goalie can steal a series. But, if the Sharks keep playing like they have been, they'll eventually sneak a puck past the red line and win the series. Detroit is getting outplayed by Phoenix. AND Phoenix has a great goalie. That's a big hill to climb. Lidstrom isn't the same anymore. I wonder if he'll retire. All I know is that I get at least two more Wings games to watch. If the Hawks win tonight, I would expect them to win the series pretty quickly. I think Washington has turned the corner on Montreal, and should wrap up in 5. Same for the Pens. Buffalo has an uphill battle, but I still expect them to win the series. Vancouver will win their series against the Kings, but Luongo has to take control. I still think Philly will take the series from the Devils.
