Vacant Horizon
Guided by VoicesCanal Street Tavern, DaytonApril 6, 1996 Played there many times myself in the 90s. cool place. it's really interesting how GBV really didn't play much around dayton, considering.

brianjeremy
Man, it would be awesome if they did a full tour and such. They, as in Pollard, was planning/thinking about releasing the Power of Suck finally. Maybe they will and tour in support?
solace
I'm not a religious man but... "Guided By Voices, the classic indie rock band from Dayton, Ohio formed by prolific songwriter and lead singer Robert Pollard in 1983, is reuniting its "classic '93 - '96 lineup" for Matador Records' 21st birthday party in Las Vegas, NV. According to Billboard sources, additional dates in other cities will be announced soon."

people are leaving
Earlier this week, we learned that Guided By Voices would reunite to play Matador's 21st birthday party, which goes down October 1-3 at the Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas. But other than frontman Robert Pollard, Guided by Voices has had more lineups than a baseball team. So what exactly does this reunion mean? The Matador 21 poster promised "the classic '93-'96 lineup." And yesterday, Pollard revealed precisely who will be involved in the reunion. Talking to Spinner, Pollard said, "It's better than the original line-up: Tobin Sprout and Mitch Mitchell [guitars], Kevin Fennell [drums], and Greg Demos [bass]." Pollard also said that they'll stick to period-appropriate music: "We'll be performing songs from the albums Propeller, Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, and Under the Bushes Under the Stars, as well as from singles and EPs from that era." Moss
i wonder what the frenzy for tickets is gonna be like... Sadly, probably not as frenzied as it should be.
jff
Sadly, probably not as frenzied as it should be. For selfish reasons, I hope you're right. If I can get a ticket I'm going to be there.
MattZ
hardwood floor's post is complicating things. If there's going to be a full (or even partial) tour, then I'd much prefer that to Vegas. As great as Vegas would be, it's going to be expensive. Pavement would have been another reason to head out there, but I am seeing them in September in NYC. Ugh. tinnitus photography
Matt, i would say it's 99% likely that GBV will be playing other shows. for Vegas, a lot of those bands tour a lot, or have recently toured, so the appeal is definitely the 'indie record nerd convention' for me. plus, seeing Come and JSBX will be fucking awesome. hardwood floor
I am digging Moses on a Snail. glad you like it, Matt I'm still in that "I don't get it" zone with this one, but hopefully it grows on me
brianjeremy
I like Moses okay, but I really feel like We All Got Out of the Army is far better than anything since From a Compound Eye. Elephant Jokes was also nice.
people are leaving
While 'Moses' does have a couple classics in 'Arrows & Balloons' & 'Each Is Good in His Own House', I still prefer 'Army" by a long shot. That being said, neither reach the greatness of Zero to 99.
MattZ
Yeah, I wouldn't say it's mindblowing. Just a sort of laid back, fun, listen. I dig it. I haven't listened to Army, but will.
hardwood floor
i agree with people are leaving ... 0 to 99 is by far bob's best since From a Compound Eye it's baffling to me to read everybody on Disarm the Settlers rave about how great Moses on a Snail is ... then I listen to it and ... wait, it's got a couple OK songs on it, but even largely forgotten solo records like Fiction Man or Motel of Fools are a million times better than Moses on a Snail is there some rule on Disarm the Settlers that you have to say everything is Bob's best record since Alien Lanes or they kick you out? jff
I guess I'm not going to Las Vegas afterall. Tickets to the Matador thing sold out instantly.

tinnitus photography
we'll just have to agree to disagree. i don't hear anything forced about that track. i wish he'd do an entire record in that style.
