Wilco - 10/14/2009 Toronto

Great show! I will leave the total setlist for someone with better attention to detail than I have - but highlights include Either Way, Can't Stand it, Pot Kettle Black, Outtasite (Outta Mind), Monday, and How To Fight Loneliness. I think Jeff has recovered from the cold that he had in Columbus. Our seats were farther away than in Columbus but it looked like he came out with more energy from the beginning. The setlist seemed a little shorter, I think 21 songs - Jeff mentioned that they were working with a tighter curfew than they were used to. This was our first show at Massey Hall and it is a great venue - the sound was amazing. The crowd did really great on the Jesus, Etc. sing-along.

Hi all-- first time post!

This was > My first live Wilco show-- after years of loving them-- so I am no judge of how it 'usually' is but I loved it. I really loved hearing How to fight loneliness live-- enjoyed it more than ever before.

Wow, Nels Cline is a monster, eh? what beautiful soloing he did. I liked how in the last 'dueling guitars' number, he was not all flash but also lovely ornamentation, too. Yum!

I hadn't known about Jeff's cold but I did notice he was kind of soft at first but seemd to warm up after the first few songs.

great great show! first time at Massey Hall.

I was meh about our seats at first (left balcony), but they were actually perfect. Sound was terrific!

I think I've seen Impossible Germany live 3 times now & it always amazes me. Nels is incredible.

Glad I got to hear Either Way, didn't realize it was so rare.

Wish I could make it tonight too!

It was Outtamind (Outta site), but otherwise king got the setlist right on.

It was a very good show, my 4th. The boys got down to business from the start, they came on at 9 and worked against a strict 11pm curfew, I think the unions here fine bands by the minute if they don't finish on time. Pretty much guaranteed no second encore, but we still got 23 songs (16 + 7 + 0). So no banter at all until the start of Either Way- after that Jeff was pretty funny and cheeky. Comments included the history of technical glitches at MH, chiding the Canadian crowds about their abilitiies with singalongs (almost all of Jesus Etc was sung by the crowd only), and a dedication of HTFL to "my family in Toronto, you know who you are" (would they Sue's family or Jeff's?). We had a very elderly couple in our row and someone right behind them answered "hi Jeff" when he said that...so I wonder if it was that group. They did the band intros at the start of the encores with the computerized Winter Olympics ethnic voices, I think John and Mikael were introduced in German, the rest in English. Fucking hilarious. Jeff also introduced Liam and said "thanks for helping out, kid". :)

Anyway drank several beer before the show and had a great time. The show didn't top Rochester (for me) but with seats in the sixth row and being able to move 1 over and get an unobstructed view, can't complain. Honestly though, I think the people on the balcony were hearing better sound balance than we had in front of the stacks. Mental note to self.

Sonic highlights-- I thought Handshake Drugs, You Never Know and Can't Stand It really connected with the crowd, same for Hate It Here, Glenn was on fire. The best run (for me) was IF>HD>PKB>HTFL, just wonderful. A bit bummed we didn't get more Woody (we were esp hoping for Cali Stars) but it was a rockin' out kinda night. Apart from Walken 4 of the last 5 were screamers, kudos to Jeff, his throat must be sore this morning.

Lots of very cool guitars on tap, epecially the Tele's and Jeff's white Skyline. He pulled out the big Rickenbacker for Walken, don't think I've seen that in concert before. Nels used the double neck for YNK.

Skipping tomorrow but will catch them again on the Canada winter tour. THANKS FOR COMING BACK, WILCO!!!

I too thought this was Rickenbacker when I first saw it, but thanks to the lovely people on this board, I realized that the guitar Tweedy plays on "Walken" is a Gibson Barney Kessel model. Cheers. :cheers

Great night!! The band sounded great. The venue (as always) was great and we had great seats (7th row centre) which will only get better tonight with 1st row centre! Can't wait.

My only complaint would be what's with the people in the first 5 rows, right in the centre, sitting for the entire main set? What gives? Sit in the friggin balcony and let the real fans sit up front. I couldn't tell if they guys noticed this pocket of about 50 people sitting on their asses all night but if I looked out that would have really pissed me off.

After Shot In the Arm, my buddy looked at me and said, "How are those people still sitting down?"

I can guarantee you I'll be standing in my front row seat tonight!!!

Great set, the set was perfect for me. "Either Way" and "I'll Fight" were huge highlights!

Followed the bus back to the Royal York, but no sight of the band.

See you guys in the HAMMER!

Enjoyed the show immensely. I was even won over by a couple songs that I'm not too fussed about studio wise. Glad to see the rarely played "Can't Stand It" getting some action on this tour.

I noticed the people sitting in the front. Typical Toronto audience :D.

We were in the 1st balcony and had a few people around us that sat through the whole show. Not sure how anyone could sit through that whole encore set, if that didn't get you moving, nothing can.

After opening with, er, Wilco (The Song), the band truly hit paydirt with Bull Black Nova off the new album which allowed Tweedy and the terribly underrated axeman Nels Cline to go off into some spacey rock realm before reining things back in.

In what Universe is Nels Cline underrated?

Shit, skipped this to see Amy Milan and the Bahamas guy. Too many entertainment options...

(although I talked to Ron Sexsmith for a while and got to marvel over Darcy Yates and Christine Bougie's playing. We even got a Leslie Feist guest appearance)

Guess I'll have to catch up with Wilco on the frozen tundra tour.

It's Outtasite (Outta Mind) that Wilco has been playing. Outta Mind (Outtasite) is the mellower bluesy version.

Fun night, definitely. Good setlist and good to hear some odd balls, most importantly How To Fight and Pot Kettle Black.

On another note, Jian Ghomeshi was in the row in front of me and he left early, not a very good interviewer leavin early!

Really fun!!! Security was crazy, nobody was allowed to rush the stage. And they meant it, too. A security guard was running back and forth at the front all night making sure nobody got up there. I asked one of the guys working there and he said it was requested by the band, but I don't know if he just wanted me to listen to him. I met some nice Viachicago fellas, too! :)

Also, my mom and brother were sitting in the gallery, and during the second song an older fellow asked a younger guy (my brother said 19ish) to sit down, and the kid attacked the guy! He was taken out of the place after but then came back, apparently. Bad vibes.

In what Universe is Nels Cline underrated?

******************

"One main difference on this current tour in support of, er, Wilco (The Album) is that the sextet isn't serving up lengthy, adventurous tunes like the 10-minute Spiders (Kidsmoke). Rather, there is a bevy of shorter, crisper tunes such as I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, Either Way and I'll Fight."

...and in what universe is a six-minute-plus song considered short and crisp?
