Bummed I missed the show -- didn't want to get others around me as sick as I am today :hmm

Will just have to see them in Madison or something. And hopefully a source will appear so I can enjoy it vicariously....

We were wondering if you were on your way, sorry you couldn't make it. :ohwell

i'd say it's pretty close

Are you basing this on the set list or were you there? Just a Kid was brilliant, Hoodoo Voodoo was inspired, I'm always in Love is one of my favorite Wilco songs ever; however the energy and performances in general were better on Monday. Just sayin.

Monday was better. Those different songs that hwllo listed were all great to hear, esp. Kamera and Seeds.

Tweedy's bit with their latest release and then he pulls out the vinyl for A.M. was pretty funny, too. Not to mentioned Box Full of Letters, Casino Queen, and Passenger Side.

I thought the place sounded fine (I was center about 20-30 feet back for both nights.) The keyboards seemed a bit louder last night. I liked Tweedy's take on the empty seats, too, he seemed to take it in all in stride. It should be interesting to see if they try to book two arena shows again...

Lastly, I agree with LouieB about Tortoise. Both nights they played great (Monday was better) and the venue did not hinder their performance/sound at all. There musical chair performances are always a thrill to watch.

Monday was most certainly better in attendance or on paper. I do like to think Sunday's set flowed a bit better, but of course you don't have to deal with repeats on the 1st night. I'd agree with the comment that the band varied things up just enough with some really nice surprises... loved all the talk about "this is the newest single off our latest release" and then he pulls out the AM vinyl. Before "Nothingsever.." he also made a quick blurb, this single is off our release from a couple weeks back... good stuff. Pat was MVP for me N2. 5th and last show for me in 2009, and where it's always gonna be tough to top the Red Rocks show on my personal list, last nights set did certainly did not disappoint at all and was almost skeptical that it might going in fearful of too many repeats and with the way things started out. Some good home cookin from the fellas though, and more than enough to tide me over until Madison.

While Greg Kot mentions Nels extensively in his review of the first night, I think the band is far more balanced than ever before. We have come to expect Nels to be incredible and he still is, but now Pat gets more leads, more fills and is just generally more of a factor in the mix. I am not saying that simply because I was standing on his side, since I usually stand on the Pat and John side. Also Jeff seems to be taking more leads and interesting leads at that. So kudos to Pat and the entire band for really kicking into high gear last night.

I agree with Lou, based on the three shows I've seen over the last 10 mos., and the one in '07. Nels was still overpowering in Lewiston this summer, but I think it was the soundboard people's fault, the audio on that show was an awful mess for the most part. Maybe the Nels wow factor has just gotten more normal to us over time, but I definitely notice the changes as the three of them evolve their contributions on various songs. You'd think three wailing guitars aren't really necessary, but now I just can't imagine some of the tunes live without that huge wall of noise (i.e. Handshake Drugs is always a highlight once Jeff straps the SG on).

What was up with the argument between Jeff and Glenn before I'm The Man Who Loves You? before Glenn jumped up on his kit? Monday Jeff mentioned something about the gong being kind of racist before walken, before playing into ITMWLY and I'm assuming they've had it all this tour?? It just seemed like a strange moment, I felt like I was watching jeff and jay argue in im trying to break your heart.

It seemed like they shared a laugh after but anyone know what it was about?

Perhaps this was an example of something playing differently up front than it did further back, but tongues were firmly in cheeks.

Totally. When Glenn stood on his kit, he was mock furious, swearing and cussing, but it was obviously played for laughs.

Wowza! What a show: well put together, tight setlist, the band played well with the audience - inviting the crowd to take the lead on Jesus, etc..

It was a workout set & encore to not quite full house- as Jeff said, "...the first show in Chicago where anyone who wanted could come out to see them."

I couldn't get a ticket for Sunday - but, I was glad I drove down from Milwaukee for closing night.

To both the band & the audience - Cheers to a great show.

MUCH better than sunday's show. Sunday wasn't bad, so much as safe and completely playing into the crowd of gapers. Last nite was the wilco i love to see. Song selection and setlist flow were much more up my alley.

Let's pause for a moment and take notice of how thoroughly Tortoise killed it each night. Was great people seemed to finally be engaged by the end of last nite's set.

Last night was Outstanding. Sunday night was my 23rd Bday but Monday night took the cake. The setlist was great. Via Chicago opener set the tone for the night. Liked when jeff said "you know we love you we wrote a song about it but we played that last night." The sound was still loud as hell but I thought it sounded a lot more balanced. The keys were a lot more prominent. Highlight for me was Poor Places to Spiders... I was in a haze of Kidsmoke it was outstanding. Glad they left the states with such a bang then again I expected nothing less which is probably why I'm broke getting on a plane back to NOLA. As always a priceless trip. Plus the best 2 days to the start of any Bday year I could ask for. Thanks Chicago and Wilco!

Red Rocks was an awesome venue! Six shows this year, this one was my last for the year...gonna miss themohwell.gif

Have to say the best setlist this year and overall vibe of the band was 2 weeks ago @ IMU Main Lounge in Iowa City...although the venue sucked, only H2O sold and it was 200 degrees in there. I actually liked the venue in sun night in Chicago, it was roomey, sound was good, and it was a snap to use the b-room and grab an ale (8.50 a beer was BS though). I could care less about the set list...I just like to see them live, even the songs I could care less about. JT could hum for 3 hours & I'd sit there happy.

I attended both nights at UIC. To my tastes, a deeper, more varied set list Monday. Sunday was a great show, but it represented the "standard" play list for this year. I was in Las Vegas early summer for the show at the Hard Rock, and it was a very similar show. (The Joint, at The Hard Rock, was a great venue, strange to see Wilco in LV though)

Monday's show did hit a few of my faves from the early records, and the band seemed to really want to end the NA tour with a memorable show. Much energy, humor and good fun.

I can't wait for the next record and tour!

FYI...I'm posting links to the Youtube videos from the show in setlist order on my site:

http://www.ChicagoConcertgoers.com

Go to the site, click the message board and enter the Concert Reviews section. I'll be adding links to videos as they're posted.

While you're at my site, be sure to vote for your favorite Wilco album on the home page.

VC Rules and Regs say:

Wilco has a long-standing policy against the videotaping of their shows, and out of respect for this policy, the posting of such videos on Via Chicago is not allowed. This also applies to solo Jeff Tweedy shows.

Just pointing it out -- not meant to be bitchy :)

My 5th and 6th shows of the year too :)

Well, the "Second Show Rule" was clearly in effect last night. Better setlist, and better energy, especially in the second set. The jam in "Handshake Drugs" was one of the best I've heard, followed up nicely by a lovely, pastoral "Far, Far Away". I also looooved Poor Places>>>>>Spiders. That was incendiary.

My one complaint is that I wish they would throw in a few more rarities for the hometown crowd. We can handle it, I promise...
