twoshedsjackson
Great voice, but they need to work on their live show. Boston's set was lacking momentum; the stage banter was cringeworthy at times. I did get both of their CDs though, I'm excited to give them a listen. BT were great. I'm getting over a cold and wasn't able to muster the strength to stay for the entire show. I'm not sure why they were booked for a 10:15 start on a Sunday night. Royale was empty, it was a bit embarrassing. A better venue and a different time slot and there would've been a more impressive turnout. That's too bad. Hartford was packed. Probably a much smaller room, though. I know what you mean about Phox's stage banter, etc. But remember - they are very young. The music's great, and the rest will come in time. twoshedsjackson
they had to go up against the Pats and Breaking Bad. plus, that's a big room for them regardless.Maybe. It's sad to think any music fan would miss a good concert in favor of watching something on television, though.
tinnitus photography
it's not they don't play around a lot...i've seen 'em 4 times and only planned to see them once. plus, sunday night shows can be the suck.

I wouldn't worry about it though, it's not a big college town.
RaspberryJam
Boston is Boston. Streets are deserted at 9 on Sunday nights. I think the venue in Hartford is terrifically small. There being a small music scene here it is just the right venue size. Hell, Wilco couldn't fill the Bushnell. Soulive only sold about 1/3 Infinity Hall, Deer Tick maybe 1/2. I think a lot of bands wouldn't play Arch St because of the lack of backstage.
tinnitus photography
if all goes according to plan, Flaming Lips and Tame Impala tonight. and Phoenix/Vaccines tmrw. and then ZZ Ward on Wed.

Used to be called something else in the '80's, the Roxy maybe, I remember an intense Gang of Four show there. I've seen a few shows there over the last couple of years, Karl Denson and Anders doing Sticky Fingers, Heartless Bastards, etc., and the room has never been more than half filled. Then I see photos of the DJ shows they put on there, and the place always looks like its packed to the rafters. Wilco didn't sell out the Bushnell during the summer 2012? I was at that show, looked filled to me.
tinnitus photography
yeah it was the Roxy. the upstairs is hardly ever open. i know that when it was the Roxy, there were some fights or other disturbances that led the city to limit capacity. not sure if Royale is still under those restrictions. i've seen it full a few times...New Pornographers had the room jammed, as did Converge (and that bill was supposed to be The Sinclair but it wasn't ready in time...they easily sold 3x the number of tickets). Oil Can Boyd
I saw both Arcade Fire and the White Stripes when that venue was called the Roxy and they were both packed.
tinnitus photography
true story - my wife and i left a show at the Roxy before the Flaming Lips played...it was the pre-Soft Bulletin tour w/ the quadro-phonic headphones they gave out to people. we dug Robyn Hitchcock's set, but Sebadoh was going poorly (Lou was pissy) and we bailed...stupid, i know! I've been in Boston for 32 years, never even heard of it. What a beautiful room and great acoustics. This was the night after the benefit show in the Hunter Center at MassMoca, where i thought the sound was not so good.

tinnitus photography
Lennon's band was pretty good. Tame Impala started out really strong and then kinda fizzled into aimlessness...picked up towards the end. Flaming Lips had a pretty poor song selection (imo) coupled w/ Wayne's increasingly frantic attempts to get the crowd into it. hey, if you can't move a crowd, that's on you. and that version of "Race For The Prize" was really stupid. i do give him some credit for ditching the hamster ball. finally. Oil Can Boyd
that version of "Race For The Prize" was really stupid. How do they do it now? The first time I saw them (at the Roxy) they opened with it and it was tremendous. The next time I saw them they opened with it and it was pretty good. The third and final time I saw them they opened with it and the whole show started to feel like schtick.
tinnitus photography
they did it in a really slow manner, with mainly just Wayne warbling the words (his voice is kinda shot, isn't it?) until after a few pointless minutes, the rest of the band kicked in at a higher tempo and the saccharine/adrenaline rush of that song was finally recognized. Mr. Heartbreak
Anyhow, that was my first show at the Bushnell. I've been in Boston for 32 years, never even heard of it. What a beautiful room and great acoustics. Bushnell is kind of a storied venue. Jerry Garcia used to play there back in the 80s.
