knotgreen
Jeff was in good spirits tonight... There was some good banter between him the audience. The crowd seemed respectful, but there was little to no singing along or whistling... just a lot of out of time clapping (which Jeff kept referencing). Cam Jones
Thanks again for the tickets! I had a great time. I met Jeff earlier that afternoon. He's a really nice guy and age has really calmed him down and lightened him up. I loved the banter. I'm so happy he loves Portland (though he must say that everywhere... but Bob Ludwig DOES live here hahha) The sound was great. The crowd was pretty sedated... I wish there was more singing and less clapping along. I dont know why its so hard to clap along. My only other gripe was I wish people were more respectful to Snowblink! They were wonderful! The lady was passing out bells to people in the crowd to ring during a few songs and so many people turned her down? whyyyy? And lots of talking throughout their set. I felt a little sorry for them. Other than that. Great show! I could've listened to him all night edit: did he really play Always In Love?
mainer
I think he also played Solitaire.
sweetheart-mine
hi everyone, he did play "solitaire," and also "i'm the man who loves you" rather than "i'm always in love." this was my first ever tweedy or wilco show, and it was FABULOUS. i absolutely loved every minute of it. jeff was in fine form musically, and friendly, funny, and charming. we had great seats in row 10, i love the state theatre. since the excitement of seeing the beatles at forest hills in nyc in 1964, this was the the most excited i've been to see anyone. i was so hyped up i thought i'd have a panic attack! my husband got me three glasses of wine to calm me down! for me it was a major thrill and couldn't have been better. thank you, jeff! sweetheart-mine
double A-ron
Great show set in a great town and played in great theater. We were first balcony middle 4 back and had trouble seeing Jeff, but we could hear him very well. We all remarked at how dim the lighting was, not much more than in my living room, but thats how he likes it I guess. I felt he started off very well with VC and the bed into a surprising IATTBYH in its typical position for a Wilco setlist. Black eye, Solitaire, Muzzle, Hummingbird, the greats, P-side and Loose fur hits were all massive highlights for me. I thought the setlist petered a bit cause I "prefer the more experimental earlier stuff"! I thought it was a tad heavy on Wilco the album though. I will tell you I love that new white guitar of his, it sounds amazing and better without the mic. Poster was lacking any art, sorry I like pictures not words. Words get old and twisted, pictures do not. Very good times, no paul from what I could see. Looking forward to setting sail on the SS2!

Ummm... And sorry I can't help with the setlist for Portland since I wasn't there. Very good times, no paul from what I could see. Looking forward to setting sail on the SS2! Assuming this refers to me, yeah, couldn't get up to Maine this time because of another, um, engagement. Have we met? (Sorry in advance if I don't remember; I also have a hard time keeping track of some people's VC handles.)
dmhphoto
Holy Cow it's cold in Portland. Loved the theater and show was great. Always wish he would play longer. Love that in Portland the beer comes to you. I can't figure how to make my photo larger. Can someone help?

run_run_run
I don't get filling sets with things like Hummingbird and such that he can't really arrange well for solo acoustic. The mid age crowd does not sing with him.... Overall it was good show
jrb
I don't get filling sets with things like Hummingbird and such that he can't really arrange well for solo acoustic. The mid age crowd does not sing with him.... Overall it was good show I don't know if the audience's age had anything to do with that. I've found that to be true of all concerts I've been to in Maine-- the audience doesn't go along with much. I was at a Decemberists show up in Orono last year and it was a very mixed crowd but the majority were college students. Everyone stayed in their seats until the 3rd time Colin Meloy asked them to get up and dance and sing along. I've lived in NY and Boston and never experienced such relaxed crowds. In one way it's nice (as I do get older!) but it's kind of weird in another. I was singing last night
run_run_run
I'm a Maine kid I would sing along. The middle age crowd was nothing short of boring most of the night

In one way it's nice (as I do get older!) but it's kind of weird in another. I was singing last night I agree with you. In my concert-going experience, the better crowds tend to be in major cities like Boston/NYC vs say Lowell, MA or Portland, ME. The crowds are different in bigger cities, and i think often times a band's intensity is drastically different when they are playing these smaller cities. Whether or not a show is general admission or seated plays a role as well. I don't think age has much to do with it, especially for Tweedy/ Wilco shows.
sweetheart-mine
maybe it's weird only if you go to wilco or other band shows too, in comparison. i live in maine, am no spring chicken, and sang along plenty last night. i've been to band concerts in boston and nyc too many to count since god knows when -- and had a great time for the most part -- but i'd take a jeff performance over any of them any day. Cam Jones
I gotta say. I saw EELS and Roger Waters in Boston last fall and the crowds were less than excited.
The Inside of Outside
Reserved seating plus solo acoustic show can equal people sitting during the show. Not always, by any means, but often anyway. I stood at Jeff's solo show at the Calvin Theater two (?) years ago; I sat last night. The Calvin crowd sang along more (like every song), and last night the State Theater crowd sang along on a few. The upside two years ago was the crowd's energy; the upside last night was that you could hear Jeff sing the songs. There's something to like in each kind of show. Funny banter last night, as usual. His give and take early on with someone who was taping the show ("Can you turn off that blue light?") was classic. Jeff has said now at a few Portland shows that he likes the city. Last night he talked about getting a meal at Street and Co., going out on Casco Bay, seeing Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering (where Wilco has had some of their CDs mastered), etc. Glad he likes it here. When I moved back here in 2000 from the NYC area, I feared I would not see Wilco as much. My fears were baseless.
tinnitus photography
i'm pretty sure that i don't need an audience sing-along to make the concert good for me. in fact, i think i'd probably prefer not have it, at an acoustic show.
dmhphoto
forgot to mention how much I loved the gingham shirt. I don't mind the sitting down at an acoustic show but I love the sing-a -long songs. I was singing and the people around me were singing so it was okay by me.
Bosco
I loved the show, and personally I'm not that into sing a longs at solo acoustic shows, I paid to hear Jeff, not a bunch of out of tune drunks that don't know the words. I was sitting the row in front of the blue eyed taper, it was a very funny exchange, however it made the drunk women behind us a little jealous and she then needed to yell out the whole show "we saw Mavis last night.", no one cares that you saw Mavis, and after the 50th time you should have realized Jeff didn't care either. As much as I love that he interacts with the crowd and it makes each show unique, it does encourage obnoxiousness.
run_run_run
I don't know a lot of people 18-24ish who go to shows who act like that.....
mdpoet
thanks, mdpoet, for the setlist! Excellent work, Mrs. Poet! (Or is it Mr. Poet?) HaHa Yeah, it was Russ, who forgot his login. Although, I had to laugh as he listed the new song as "Finger".
