Top 50 american rock bands of all time...

#2 will make you cringe!

With roots firmly planted in both salt-of-the-earth folk songs and unblinkingly experimental rock, Wilco just might be the quintessential modern American band. Fearless and inventive, frontman Jeff Tweedy has guided his alt-rockers through numerous permutations, delivering a soul-satisfying road album (Being There), multi-tracked melancholy (Summerteeth) and haunting dispatches from life in the 21st century (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot). Wilco reside somewhere between the “Ashes of American Flags” and the Sky Blue Sky, telling tales from the forgotten recesses of the mind, the world and rock ’n’ roll. – Bryan Wawzenek

this doesn't surprise me...does it you guys? "most people" wouldn't know good music if it kicked them in the ass, and i'm pretty sure this poll/ranking represents "most people."

Yes, this is true. "Most people" I know don't know who Wilco is, much less put them in a list of top bands.

they put out some great records but #2? yeesh, their output since say, Permanent Vacation was awful, and I'm being kind w/ that end point.

Aerosmith is certainly problematic. Up until Joe Perry left the band in the 1979, Aerosmith was as good an American band has ever existed. After the reunion, they certainly had a lot of hits and sold a lot of records, but they were more of a vaudville act. They belong on the list, but I don't think I would put them in the top 25 over what they have become in the last 25 years.

I think that putting Bruce and the E Street Band at #1 is on target and was really pleasantly surprised. The choice is an obvious one for those of us who saw them in 1976, 1978, 1981, 1985 or on the Reunion tour. They were a raw, obscure cult bar band before Born to Run, an they went through the motions on the Tunnel of Love Express tour. The Rising tour and last two tours were, in effect, valedictory shows that were more energetic and powerful shows than those put on by most bands 30 years their junior.

Even though I am not a fan, I think it is a joke that the Dead aren't in the top 10. These guys were the quintessential American Band. I am anything but a fan, but any list that doesn't have these guys in the top 5 is really doubtful.

Creedence at 14? Really? The epitome of American Music. Almost as much of a head scratcher as having Yo Lo Tengo on the list. The quirky, obscure cult band that other artists love and practically nobody has ever heard of niche is properly occupied by NRBQ.

Nirvana at #3 and the Byrds at #&7?

People love lists almost as much as they like critiquing them.

Yeah, I had the same thought...

you can say that again.

You object to either of these bands making the list?

i don't think he's objecting to them being on the list, just maybe the order in which they appear.

Steely Dan you're right about, but Little Feat has too small of a nationwide appeal to approach this list. Maybe top 100, but not top 50.

Well...it is the Top 50 American Bands of All Time. I think Little Feat had the chops and the rep to warrant a spot.

Placement on the list, not the inclusion. The Byrds in the top 10 and not the Dead?

Anyone care to provide an alternative top ten. Would be interesting to see if there is any kind of consensus. Would Wilco be in there?

As an aside, us Brits always produced the best bands whilst you guys seem to produce the best solo artists.
